If you have an antivirus program installed, update the definitions and run a scan. There are also several excellent online virus scanners. I would post links for you, but cannot due to my post count. You can Google and find them.
TrendMicro Housecall
PandaScan
RAV Antivirus online scan

No single program will always detect everything. Thus it is a good thing to layer your defenses. I use NOD32 AV and complete weekly scans with Panda and Housecall. Good luck to you, I hope you figure this out. you may also want to log into hotmail and change your password AFTER you clean your computer of any nasties. Pick a secure password. Rule of thumb is 8 characters, with a mixture of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters (i.e. # or % or $).

Regards,
Jim

Chances are your computer has a worm/virus that is allowing someone to spoof your account..

Spoofing is making an email appear to be from a different address than it actually is. If his computer is infected, then the email address isn't spoofed: it's actually coming from his email address.

However, it's very possible that his computer is not infected, and the virus is spoofing his email address. Happens all the time, there's nothing that can be done about it.

It's specifically MSN Messenger being mentioned. To say it's spoofed is to say that the perpetrator has access to the account to log into it and send IM's (containing text messages or files) to the accounts contacts. That person can even login to the account and have a conversation with any contacts associated with that account.

This is generally done by use of a Worm which gathers the account information from the infected computer and possibly sends it to an IRC channel to be listed on its log file.

No, that is exactly what spoofing is not. Spoofing is fasely masquerading as someone else, without actually having their credentials. Since it appears that they actually have access to his account (or else they wouldn't have his contacts), it's not spoofing.

ARP spoofing
(n.) Also referred to as ARP poison routing (APR) or ARP cache poisoning, a method of attacking an Ethernet LAN by updating the target computer’s ARP cache with both a forged ARP request and reply packets in an effort to change the Layer 2 Ethernet MAC address (i.e., the address of the network card) to one that the attacker can monitor. Because the ARP replies have been forged, the target computer sends frames that were meant for the original destination to the attacker’s computer first so the frames can be read. A successful APR attempt is invisible to the user.

Peanut,

You've got some type of malware most likely that are causing your problems. Are you running Windows XP? If so, try to boot into Safe Mode with Networking. A virus and adware/spyware scan are going to have to be done first before you do anything else. To boot into safe mode, start tapping the F8 key as soon as it begins to boot (before the Windows splash screen shows). Then you'll get a menu where you can choose safe mode.

That's one type of spoofing, and that's not what's being done in this case. If someone has his MSN contact list, then they have full access to his account.
