If you find yourself in traffic behind one of those big brown trucks from UPS, chances are you're not in a left-turn lane. As Mental Floss explains, the company has figured out that left turns wind up wasting a lot of time and gas as drivers sit there waiting for traffic to clear. As a result, drivers' routes are set up to get to destinations through a series of right-hand turns, and the company says the policy has saved 100 millions of gas in the last decade. Backing up is frowned upon, too. Click for the full article, which has 17 other "secrets" of the company fleet.

The whole "no-left-turns" thing can save some fuel, but not time. While there are certainly situations where going an extra block then doing three right turns instead of waiting to turn left could save some time, in general there aren't really any savings.

Also, the myth that it saves time has been busted by the myth-busting team on Mythbusters.

If you read the link carefully you would see that this is not what they are doing. They are designing routes to avoid left turns.

If you go a step farther and have the advantage I do of having a route home (which I take for traffic avoidance) where there is a left but minimal traffic which is frequented by both FedEx and UPS you might realize the title is inaccurate. But UPS plans routes to avoid waits at intersections I
makes a crappy sound byte.
