  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well I am a christian and I am wondering what we should do as a people. Now of course Christians should hold each other accountable when it comes to sins. But I dont know if we should hold non-believers to our moral standards. So of course us Christians would say that abortion, homosexuality and other things that many would consider private an important issue that needs to be stopped. But how can we convince someone that sin is wrong when they dont even believe in what we believe. How can we hold a society that doesnt share our belief in God to follow God's Law?? I am just wondering should we impose our morals on unbelievers??? Somebody help and try to use scripture if you can.

I think we should specifically not try to impose morals on others, rather, I think we should lead by example and try to impose only the bare minimum laws needed to have a society in which people can make their own moral choices.

I think that it is important to keep in mind the difference between imposing "Christian morality" on a unbelieving society through legislastion or the might of the state, and peacefully attempting to convince unbelievers concerning the right or wrong of something from a Christian perspective. I believe the use of coercive means to impose a certain system of beliefs on anyone is wrong. There is certainly nothing wrong with Christians, who make up a very large segment of our society, contributing to the ongoing debate concerning issues such as homosexuality and abortion.

You wanted scripture to back up opinion. 1Corinthians 5 addresses this issue quite well. Reading verse 10 and 12, shows us that there is indeed a big difference in how we should view the morality of the unbeliever and the morality of the believer

1 Cor 5 said:
9 I wrote to you in an letter not to company with fornicators: 10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortionists, or with idolaters; for then must you needs go out of the world. 11 But now I have written to you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortionist; with such an one no not to eat. 12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not you judge them that are within? 13 But them that are without God judges. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

As a Christian, I have my boundaries and they are free to have their own... or lack thereof.
That does not render me mute or impotent in fighting against 'their values' or lack thereof being pressed upon me or my children.
I am free to plead my case of 'values' to them and they are free likewise. Unfortunately, there are always those that wish to force their ideology upon others - for some reason, they feel that it isn't hypocritical for them to claim that this accusation only applies to Christians.
I have a right and an obligation to not sanction/endorse such things as same gender marriage, abortion, teaching a false notion of 'safe sex' with condoms, etc.
I also have rights and responsibilities as a citizen - their objection of me partaking in such is their error.

In my opinion from a little experience is to just try to get them curious, make them wonder about what you believe, bring up conversations but don't argue and insist that you're beliefs are right, that only turns people away. When people tell me that I'm wrong about my beliefs and that I don't know what I'm talking about then I just tell them, well what if, by any chance, what if I am right, what then, that usually gets em to thinking. I dunno, maybe this post isn't quite right for here but this is how I feel.

When Christ came into this world He did not come as a ruling power. He taught forbearance, mercy, and compassion. In this He was revealing the character of the Father, who is long-suffering, merciful, and gracious, slow to anger, and full of goodness and truth.

Let us seek to understand how to reach the people. There is no better way to do this than to be compassionate and sympathetic. Persons are attracted by sympathy and love; and many may thus be won to the ranks of Christ and reform; but they cannot be forced or driven. Christian forbearance, candor, consideration, and courtesy toward all who do not see the truth as we do, will exert a powerful influence for good. Let others see that our religion does not make us unsympathetic or exacting. Let all who profess to have found Christ minister as He did for the benefit of men.

^^I have read this passage in the bible and this leads me to believe that we are judging ourselves by imposing our beliefs. But then I think of all the horrible things people do such as abortion. If us Christians dont do something to stop this, who will??? I dont want to be harsh, but I dont want to just stand back and let the world pull away from morals. Its a hard decision and this really affects how we christians should act toward our government and the many people who live with us.

If instead of trying to control what is beyond our control, we choose to love one another, and to provide a means for mothers to make a sane and sensible choice how many children will be saved (just using abortion as an example...) in other words - put your time and money in - not your mouth.
