Update on Fr. John Corapi

Question. Once a priest, always a priest. Can he still say mass, take simple bread and wine, and say the holy words of Christ and they become His Body and Blood? Or is he now stripped by himself or church from doing so?

That is so sad, to give that up. I do not rejoice at the turning away of any priest. (And ya all keep your shirts on as I am not suggesting any of you are rejoicing.)

I've always been a fan of Fr. Corapi. His teaching on the rosary opened me up to the Catholic view of the prayer and helped me see past my bias & misunderstanding. His lectures on the catechism are fantastic as well as many, many other subjects. He's really a dynamic speaker as well.

All that said, I'm disappointed he's stepping away from the priesthood and this black sheep dog bit just comes off as weird. I would prefer that he stayed in the priesthood and fought the good fight.

if the allegations are false then he should keep his ball in the game until he is clear and use his influence to help others falsely accused

but for some reason he is unwilling to work with his bishop and thinks he should be above policy

even though he preached 'mother church' and told us that we need to obey the Church, he wont

he needs permission from the bishop in whatever diocese he is in to say mass- my guess is he (corapi) will choose not too due to the politics involved

I always assumed so, but I could be wrong. It's not his voice per se that put mem off, but the vibrato and pomp that he spoke with on his radio program. Something that's missing from the speach that is linked in this thread. When people think they have to orate in a peculiar manner in order to hold my attention, I assume that what they're saying isn't all that noteworthy.

If he was found guilty, then the revenue he makes would cease. His strategy seems to be, play the martyr and keep the profits rolling in.

I say, don't let the door hit you in the backside. I knew it from jump street and I let my intuition be known on this forum. Corapi was a sketchy guy and I think he was in the ministry for all the wrong reason.

Compare Fr Corapi's actions to that of Padre Pio when Padre Pio was forbidden to even say Mass, forbidden to hear confessions . . .

He obediently submitted to his superiors because he understood that in so doing, he was submitting to Christ Himself.

One does not get to decide when they will obey their Bishop and when they won't, unless the Bishop tells them to do something gravely against faith or morals.

Obedience is the fruit of the Holy Spirit, not an independent spirit. Rank disobedience such as this reveals one is in rebellion, and not just rebellion to some earthly superior, but to God.

This is how schisms are born . . .

A priest can only do so if allowed to by the Bishop.

When someone acts in this fashion in rank disobedience to his Bishop, then his words become suspect.

Fight? It is submission to the Bishop, obedience to the Church that is at issue . . . . The Bishop has the right to restrain him. If he rebelled against that it is because of a rebellious spirit not a christ-like one.

It casts a doubt on anything he claimed or claims.

It may be that his Bishop has discerned something in addition to the complaint receivded, and exercised his authority to protect the flock.

The response to the suspension was to say he would submit to the Church and then to attack the Church in the next breath for the process, denegrating the Magesterial authority of the Bishops in involved. . .

In contrast, Padre Pio never uttered a word of denouncement, not even privately, let alone publically . . that would have been unthinkable.

This time could have been well used as Padre Pio used his in quiet, solitary comtemplative prayer and study trusting completely to God for the outcome. During this time Padre Pio grew deeply in his spiritual life, willingly accepting his cross. It grew great fruit in his life and ministry.

This, regardless of how dark it looks, is actually an opportunity offered by God to take up the cross, deny himself and follow Christ - and has been rejected. . . . Pray that he reconsiders and allows God's perfect work to be accomplished in him in full obedience and submission to the Church.

I will not try to fight this irrational and unjust situation for the simple reason that I dont want to be placed in an adversarial posture against the Church. For 20 years I did my best to guard and feed the sheep. Now, based on a totally unsubstantiated, undocumented allegation from a demonstrably troubled person I was thrown out like yesterdays garbage. I accept that. Perhaps I deserve that.
I cant do what I cant do. I can only do what I can do. If he is delusional, as his words above would indicate, then this process is bringing it to a head, exposing it. And it would be right that he would be on indefinite leave from his priestly responsbibilities. His characterization of the process he has been subjected to must be taken with a grain of salt.

Thank you thereselittleflower for your posts. It it just plain sad. And as for Michie's link of Mr. John Corapi goes I stay - is that in some way suggesting that there are those who might follow? I pray not. I liked Mfr. Corapi a lot but any forth coming sermons, admonitions I would find hollow now. If ya talk the talk, ya oughta walk he walk and he now has not.

I am now finished with this topic. I believe Christ weeps and so do I.
