• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hello

Later this week we have a long awaited autism evaluation for my stepdaughter at a specialist autism clinic. Any advice and tips on what to expect would be appreciated thank you. How long does it take? The only symptom I’ve personally observed in her is her hand flapping.
What sort of questions do I need to ask? To cut up a notoriously boring story we suspect she has mild autism. Will I be asked to complete a parent questionnaire or not?
Prayers and thoughts please. I’m desperately hoping for positive news.

How did it go?

My daughter was diagnosed with autism three years ago now, but I don't know how the process might differ between countries. We had assessments by a paediatrician, speech therapist and child psychologist (as well as other things, like tests to rule out problems with her hearing). The big wait for us was getting all the appointments, but the actual assessments probably took the equivalent of a day or so, all up? But we didn't get all the appointments that close together.

My recollection was that we didn't need to ask questions, and in fact wouldn't have known what questions to ask. The assessment process was really eye-opening, because I didn't understand autism very well before that!

If you have any questions or want to share with another mum who's been through it, I'm always happy to chat. :)
