• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I empathize with you on many levels. I started out with the occassional binge, like once a month, then once a week, but then I started attending AA meetings and tried to accept that I needed support and needed to make some changes in order to stay stopped with my drinking.

That was when I was married, and had someone who was watching me. I wanted to save my marriage and not have my kids hate me all the time.

Well, for the past seven years, I have nobody. My kids love me, but they are your age, and live elsewhere. My ex left me.

So, my motivation has to come from within. Not easy, because I have none on my own strength. Going to AA meetings helps me find my motivation. It reminds me of just how miserable I have felt drinking, hungover, hating myself, and my body hating what I was doing to it.

My first suggestion is to get a physical. Tell your doctor exactly how much you drink and how often. Ask if you could be damaging your liver or pancreas. Both suffer terribly when alcoholics are drinking too much. I have met people with hepatitis C from excess alcohol. My son had a professor who died from liver cancer, because he drank too much. I had several clients in a halfway house who had pancreatitis.

Then there is the possibility of diabetes. A lot of alcoholics develop either diabetes or hypoglycemia. Excessive alcohol messes with the body's blood sugar levels, and can cause those two diseases. That could explain your run down feeling till the alcohol is completely out of your system.

I would stop blaming the abscessed tooth. If you were treated with antibiotics and a root canal, that infection would be long gone.

Get a physical, be honest with your doctor, and try attending a few AA meetings.

...but now it is hard for me to even get motivated to just want to do the simplest of jobs...i dont know if im still trying to get my stamina back or what it is...my ears constantly ring everyday also....i feel my body is telling my to just give up beer all together....to tell you the truth i dont have anyone to make a commitment to so i always loose motivation when i make a promise....

If you are an alcoholic, and you don't have motivation to stop now, you will eventually find that alcohol is a great persuader. When you do find the motivation, please remember that there IS a solution. Following the 12 steps of AA is the easiest way.

....ok i only drink a 12 pack when i drink....

I don't think many non-alcoholics would have added the word "only" in this sentance. But, the amount of alcohol that you drink, or the frequency at which you drink it, is NOT what determines who is an alcoholic. An alcoholic is someone who craves more once they take the first drink, and is unable to stop taking their first drink. Try this test, next time you drink, try stopping abruptly after 3 or 4 drinks. Decide to do this before you start. Try it a few times - different days of course. :) If you regularly fail to stop, or if you are only able to stop with great inner turmoil, you probably meet the first test; you probably crave more once you take the first drink.

maybe i am having other health problems...just wondering if any of u have had the same things go on when u drink....

I became severely depressed and lost stamina and motivation, but I didn't have some of your other problems. I would recommend seeing a medical doctor also.

Binge drinking is considered 5 or more drinks in one sitting. Do some google searching on the effects of the body.

The human body metabolizes alcohol at a rate of 14-16 ( .5 oz.) mls/hour. An average 12 oz. bottle of beer or 1.5 oz. shot contain about 17 mls of alcohol. Your body can metabolize about one drink per hour depending on body weight, gender, food consumption, your liver, and genetics.

In my opinion a case of beer a week is alot, and I do feel your body is telling you this as well.
This amount of alcohol is damaging your body for sure. You are heading down the road to dependance.

I would stop, and if you find you are having trouble get some help.

God Bless

In AA they have people called sponsors who coach you as you quit drinking. They are people who were once like you who decided to quit and had other people coach them through it. If you want help AA is there if you choose to give it a try.

to tell you the truth i dont have anyone to make a commitment to so i always loose motivation when i make a promise....

Make a commitment to yourself, funny thing about ourselves is that every where we go....there we are...:D

I suggest attending 60 AA meetings in 60 days and make your own determination about whether you're an alcoholic.

Like for others, my prayer for you is that you find the truth and it sets you free.

God Bless.
