For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given...Isaiah 9:6
Many people ask, "What is there to be merry about?" With wars and terrorism, crime at an all-time high, marriages breaking apart, drugs - no wonder some people question whether we should be saying, "Merry Christmas"
Yet it was at such a time that our Lord Jesus Christ came down into the world some 2000 years ago. And it will be at such a time that Jesus Christ comes back to His church.
The angel on that first Christmas night said, "For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord" Luke 2:11. If we believe this then it makes all the difference in the world for us. Life takes on a new dimension.
A passage of Old Testament scripture says, not just at this time of the year but also at many other times other than the Christmas season: "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light: Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, Upon them a light has shined. Isaiah 9:2.
"For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder; And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince od Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice, From that time forward forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this" Isaiah 9:6.
Centuries later Jesus asked the religious leaders of His day this question, "What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He? They said to Him, "The Son of David" Matt. 22:42.
The "Child born" establishes the fact of Christ's humility. The Son given" establishes the fact of His deity. Jesus is the God-man.
