Hey,
I'm not a christian, I'm not religious. I would classify myself as an atheist, but I'm not exactly convinced by anything such as science or religion.. That's pretty much the dilemma that I've been facing my whole life; I choose not to believe anything I'm told and I believe I've made an honest attempt to be as unbiased as possible towards anything; I'm not going to have a rant about how science contradicts this and Christianity contradicts that.

The thing about religion is that I don't really have a problem with it, but I don't need it either. I'm 16 years old in England, so it's been little exposed to me compared to many people whom I assume to be on these forums. My main question is: what exact reason do I have to become religious? Obviously this is a christian forum so I guess I'll be receiving christian views as responses, but that's fine by me. If somebody can convince me that'd be great, as currently I'm living a grey life; people tell me to be less "boring" and I just don't see what the point is.

I've asked this question in numerous other places, but nobody can give me a reason to change my view upon life. Perhaps I will get a response here, perhaps I will not.
Thanks for reading this drivel, I'm a tad tired at the moment and I may have left something out or said something that doesn't make sense. Feel free to ask questions, and feel free to move this post to somewhere else if it's in the wrong board.

This section is for questions about ethics and morality. You'd probably want this moved to an "exploring christianity" section. That said....

I know where you're coming from. I had very little exposure to religion when I was growing up as well and while both of my parents were believers, I came to the conclusion that atheism was true by the time I was 10-11. I don't see any relationship between religious beliefs and being "interesting" or "boring". If you think that people see you as boring and you want to change that, I would suggest figuring out what you're passionate about and immersing yourself in it. You'll inevitability find more and more people who are passionate about the same thing and you'll find yourself interacting with them in a less "boring" manner.

Ah, I apologise. Hopefully someone will be kind enough to move this to that forum then.

It's not really that the problem is people see me as boring (though that is true), it's that I don't really see a point to life. Perhaps when I was young and naïve I believed life was all fun and games, but that doesn't really count. It's more that I don't mind if I live or die. I'm not suicidal; please don't mistake me for that. However, I wouldn't be sad if someone showed up to kill me, for example.

If you want to understand reality, then you need to follow Yeshua.
If you want to do good works, then you need to follow Yeshua.
If you want to live forever, then you need to follow Yeshua.
If you want to have love, and be love, then you need to follow Yeshua.
If you want to be the best you can possibly be, then you need to follow Yeshua.

Again, find what you are passionate about... in doing so you may find that the point to your life is easier to recognize. This life is what you make of it.

What it boils down to is no one knows what happens when we die if anything. Just ceasing to exists kind of sucks, going to hell really sucks but heaven sounds like a good deal. Then when you ponder that you start to ponder how we even got here, it is statisticly improbably that we just evolved out of a soup but even if we did you can take the question further and ask how did our planet and solar system come to be. Scientists hypothesize the big bang, but then who/what was the big banger?

So then if you come to the conclusion that God is the big banger you have to ask who he is and what he wants and why are we here.

I'm an atheist, but I was a committed Christian for most of my life.

I've been called boring before, and I was really insulted... though I know how I talk can be bored (because I'm shy).

Anyway, I'd say that worthwhile things in life would be finding someone to love, using or developing a talent you enjoy, just enjoying life, and trying to help others. People tend to be happy when they are helping others. :)

Do you have questions in regard to atheistic living, or just Christian?

Hmmm, you have gotten responses from an agnostic, a Christian, an atheist, a seeker, a deist, and a humanist. Since the Christian used the name Yeshua instead of Jesus, I'm going to assume he's one of those guys that I don't know what they're called. Not a bad thing, I just don't know what they're called. =)

Q: Why do you have to become religious?
A: You don't. You can live a normal life, get married, have kids, make some money, spend some money, die and be returned to the ground. The world will keep spinning and people around you will toast the times you had and go on living until they join you.

OR

You can repent of your sins and unbelief, believe in the Gospel of Jesus, and live a life of faith and discover His love for you while living out His plan for your life. Once you die, your body will be buried but you will spend the rest of eternity in His presence.

Christianity meets people's needs, mainly the needs it casts upon you... it's the solution to it's own problem.

When you accept it's dilemma and begin to believe you need to be saved by it from it... you then need to obey it to meet those needs.

If you don't accept the dilemma's that Christianity places upon you (sin and hell) then you will never have a reason to be a Christian.

If you need to think you'll live forever, or that life will always work out in your favor, or that you have someone watching out for you... you may have a need that Christianity could meet... but there are other ways to address those problems.

It also doesn't make sense to ask why you should start believing something... that isn't why we believe things are true. No one should be able convince you that you should change your beliefs because (that's not how belief works) you brain is going to determine what it thinks is true or not for you before you even know it's happened.

When you sit and think "ok, that's a good reason, I'll start believing that" then you have either already began to believe or you are merely going to ACT like you believe. Belief is not a choice. You do not have a conscious choice in what you believe anyway. By the time you feel like your changing your belief, it's already happened.
