  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The University of Oklahoma has announced that a trans-identified graduate assistant who gave a Christian student a failing grade for writing an assignment that criticized gender ideology no longer has teaching duties.

The university released a statement on Monday explaining that an unnamed graduate teaching assistant will “no longer have instructional duties” following the grading incident.

I have mixed feelings about this, but if the instructor could not be unbiased, then that’s their own fault. To be fair, the student could have written a better more academic paper.

I agree with you. If the assignment was not followed or done poorly, then the views mean very little. We would have to see the full assignment and paper though to know. A zero though seems wrong, perhaps a 40 to 60 is more appropriate?

Eh? I don’t know: The student didn’t even get the required word count.

I had the same course in college as a psych major. The nursing students were also required to take it and many non majors took it as an elective.

It’s basically about the psychological perspective from life from womb to tomb. Yes, transgender issues were also discussed. (But not emphasized. This was when I was a sophomore in college in 2016)

Intro to psych was more general and I took it as a freshman in the fall of 2014.

Both intro to psychology and lifespan development were introductory psychology courses.

I'm not sure how anyone could get zero marks other than failing to submit any work. So it seems that the tutor reacted from their own lifestyle choices.

However, I think that the student needed to learn how to write a more objective essay and build an argument from a given position. If she called something demonic then she needs to argue her case for the existence of demons. I agree with her views but she needs to stand back fom them. This is an academic essay not a sermon.

Seems you know more about the studet's work than I and yes being short should affect the grade. To me a zero implies that you did no work. A half paper receiving a half grade seems fair to me. The teacher better produce some sort of rubric for their grading. Often this might be done in their head, but if I were the teacher I would have it written out by now because that is what they are going to be judged on. I hope OU is not shell-shocked by these allegations. It really is simple, you compare the paper with the requirements and that is the grade. Students usually do have an appeal process. Removing the instructor seems perhaps harsh but they are a T/A so that is so easy compared to a tenured professor. Hope they can get a just outcome though for all involved.
