Bookofknowledge vbmenu_register("postmenu_13956946", true); posted this verse which I found interesting. Could it be interpretted as referring to universal salvation? And is there a Muslim sect which teaches this or do all Muslims believe in hell of eternal punishment?

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith Number 1456 - Narrated AbuHurayrah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Everyone who dies will repent." He was asked the nature of their repentance and replied, "If one did what was good he will repent of not having done more, and if one did evil he will repent of not having restrained himself."

First a correction, that is not a verse, it is a hadith. It is a saying of the Prophet, not a verse (ayah) from the Qur'an.

Hell is a tricky thing. Only God knows who will be there and who will not. It is certain that non muslims will go to hell. What is uncertain is how long their stay in hell is. For me, I look to this ayah:

"To those who reject Our signs and treat them with arrogance, no opening will there be of the gates of heaven, nor will they enter the garden, until the camel can pass through the eye of the needle: Such is Our reward for those in sin. (Quran, 7:40)"

This verse could be taken several ways. It could mean that people who reject islam will never make it to heaven because a camel can never pass through the eye of a needle. Or, it could mean that some day, the impossible will happen, and on that day, those who are in hell will finally be purified and allowed into jannah.

We do know that some people will be taken out of hell, according to this hadith:

Jabir reported that he had heard with his ears the Apostle (may peace be upon him) saying: Allah will bring out people from the Fire and admit them into Paradise.

But who will they be? Allahu Alem, only God knows, which is why it is better to live one's life by the principles of Islam then to speculate what God will do in the next life. Even if people do eventually get out, the punishments of the hellfire will be long and, well, hellish.

mankind is given mind, desire and anger...

Islam ask people to use mind and don't follow desire and don't do things out of ignorance which promote anger... Islam has made obligatory on men/women to seek knowledge. once a person gain knowledge their mind will reject the call of desire of doing evil or bad deeds.

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said the best deed is to believe in allah and fight for His cause.

20:123
saying: "Get down from here all of you (Adam, Eve and Iblees); you will remain enemies to one another, whenever there comes to you guidance from Me and whosoever will follow My guidance will neither go astray nor get into trouble;

20:124
but the one who will turn away from My reminder shall live a meager life and We shall raise him back to life as a blind person on the Day of Resurrection."

20:125
He will say: "O Rabb! Why have you raised me up blind here, while I was clear-sighted before?"

20:126
Allah will say: "Just as Our revelation came to you and you played blind; so are you blind today."

20:127
Thus do We reward the one who is a transgressor and does not believe in the revelations of his Rabb. The punishment of the Hereafter is more terrible and more lasting.

20:128
Have these people not learned a lesson that; We have destroyed before them many generations in whose ruins they walk through? Certainly in these ruins there are Signs for people of understanding.
