Because unbleievers have a debt for sin that is eternal and therefore will never be able to repay, the wrath of God will also be eternal, and even if they remain in the lake of fire for eternity, their debt will never be repaid. Some believe that unbelievers will continue to sin while in Hell and so while they are repaying their debt, more debt will be added on making them always in debt for sin for the rest of eternity.
The blessing for the believer is that when Jesus shed His blood and suffered on the Cross, it took Him just three hours to pay the debt of sin for every single person from Genesis to Revelation who put their trust either in the Messiah to come, or the Messiah who died on the Cross for them, The miracle is that Jesus endured the eternal wrath of God for sin in just three hours. No normal human being would have been able to endure that without being burned up. But Jesus was God in human flesh, and because He is God, He was able to bear the full eternal wrath of God and satisfy it in just three hours. Once He knew that the debt had been paid, He gave up His life. Neither the Cross nor the eternal wrath of God killed Him. He decided to give up His life as soon as He knew the debt was paid.
This means that those who put their trust in Christ will not have to pay that debt of sin. Jesus paid it on their behalf. This is why true believers love the Lord Jesus Christ with all their hearts because they know what He did for them on the Cross of Calvary.
