What does the continuing chaos and infighting in the Democratic Party say about their leaderships ability to unify?

There never will be unity within the Democratic party (without major changes that I'm not holding my breath about). Basically, the current Democratic party is an umbrella for everyone who doesn't want to be in the Republican party for a multitude of very widely varying reasons. In some states, you have to be in a particular party in order to vote in that party's primaries, so for example, many who wanted to vote for Bernie registered as Democrats for that sole purpose, and the Democratic establishment went through every length they could to get rid of them as "not true Democrats".

But what is a true Democrat?

Nobody really knows because the focus as been on opposing someone or something, such as Trump, and doesn't ever really seem to stand FOR anything.

I'm currently registered Democrat and it's been my biggest complaint with the party in general. What the heck does it stand FOR? Again, nobody really knows because it only seems to be defined by what it claims to be not. We're the party of "not Trump" but that means nothing.

And that's why there will be no unity.

(Now I have plenty of complaints about the GOP as well, but not the topic of this thread.)

House liberals left the Capitol triumphant on Thursday night after once again scuttling a major vote. Every other Democrat was fuming.

For the second time in less than a month, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her leadership team had to delay a vote on Senate-passed infrastructure bill amid progressive opposition, denying President Joe Biden a much-need win as Democrats’ bigger, $1.75 trillion social spending plan also remains in limbo.

That getting a large group of people representing a broad spectrum of diverse values and viewpoints to agree on policies that will affect the entire country is a difficult task, requiring extensive negotiation and compromise.

Besides, the Democratic party understands that to get, one must also give -- in the wise words of the prophets Jagger and Richards, you can't always get what you want.

The Republicans are anti-Liberal, and the Democrats are anti-Republican

I wanted someone who knew which century we are in and knew something about it, and that narrowed the field all the way down to Andew Yang. Not perfect but better than the others.

There is a certain truth to this, but as much as I personally abhor the "both sides do it!" argument, the GOP from 2008-2016 was the "not Obama" party, which led them so rudderless and leaderless, that Donald was easily able to swoop in and slap his own brand on them... then from 2016-present (and God knows how far in the future) they became "In Donald We Trust." -- until Donald's imprisonment or death removes him as a threat to them.

During Donald's reign, I personally worried that the same thing would happen to the Dems -- frankly, I'm relieved that it didn't... and the fact that the Democratic Party is composed of various factions, President Biden is actually negotiating with them, is refreshing... The alternative being actively working to oust them from the party.

While in the Senate it is two major players - but the current issues are in the House where the socialists are fighting with the progressives who are fighting with the moderates.

I don’t want unity, I don’t want “Follow the president’s wish” . I want debate, I want every congress man and woman have their own mind and after going round and round they come to a concession. This is what democracy is all about. If president set agenda and every one in the party just follow then it is not democracy, it is autocracy.
