Understanding the Sabbath

Our gathering together on Saturday is an expression of our love for God. It has nothing to do with works or trying to earn our way to heaven.

1 John 5:3For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

How do we know that Saturday is the day that God calls us to gather in fellowship? First of all the Word of God tells us that the seventh day is the Sabbath Day and Saturday is the seventh day. Webster's Dictionary also tells us that Saturday is the seventh day.

Webster's: Saturday the seventh day of the week.

God's Word gives a clear understanding regarding which day we should call the Sabbath Day and which day we should set aside for Him.

Remember this one very important thing regarding the Sabbath Day. The literal seventh day is an outward expression of what should be going on within our hearts. We should be resting in the fact that Jesus died for sin and we are sinners. Jesus made the way to the Father through His death and resurrection. The Sabbath Day is a time to reflect on what God has done for us though His Son. It's a time to gather in fellowship one with another in the Word of God helping one another to grow in the understanding of God's awesome love for us.

There is another very important thing we need to understand regarding resting in the Lord and that is listening to His voice in our conscience regarding the things we say and do.

1 John 3:18-21 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

What ever day we gather on we do it for the Lord for He is directing our path and we hear His voice and we know Him and He knows us. There may be a reason for Him wanting you to gather on a another day other than the Sabbath in order for God's will to be done through you.

Romans 14:5-8 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.

In other words, if the Lord has impressed your heart to gather on Sunday then you need to be in church on Sunday, this is abiding in Christ. God's Word tells us that Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. The Sabbath is not a particular day but rather a life of rest and peace with God the Father though Christ. This is the inward Sabbath and the true meaning of it. Jesus will direct our path for daily living and draw us to the our Heavenly Father if we obey His directions.
Remember, this site is not to condemn anyone but rather it's to help us grow closer to God in Spirit and in Truth.

The following are biblical verses which speak about the seventh day Sabbath.

1. Genesis 2:1-3 After working six days to create this earth, God rested on the seventh day of the week (Saturday).

2. Genesis 2:2-3, Exodus 20:11 When God rested on the seventh day He blessed it and made it Holy.

3. Numbers 23:19-20 No human can change the day God has blessed and made holy.

4. Hebrews 4:9-11 God created the Sabbath day of rest before Adam and Eve sinned.

5. Mark 2:27 Jesus said that the Sabbath was made for man.

6. Mark 2:28 Jesus said that He is Lord of the Sabbath day so the Sabbath is the Lord's day.

8. Exodus 20:11 The Sabbath day is a memorial of creation.

9. Deuteronomy 5:12-15 The Sabbath day is also a memorial of God's redemptive power.

10. Genesis 2:3 The Bible Sabbath is the seventh day of the week. Any standard calendar shows us that the seventh day of the week is Saturday. Even Astronomers and chronologists agree that ever since creation, the seventh day of the week has never been changed.

11. The Sabbath was not invented by the Jews, for it was created by God 2,500 years before there ever was a Jew.
13. Exodus 16:4,27-30 The Sabbath was part of God's Law before the Ten Commandments were given on Mount Sinai.

14. Exodus 20:8-11 In the Ten Commandments God reminded His people to keep the seventh day holy. He also says not to steal, lie, murder and so on.

15. Deuteronomy 4:13-14 God not only spoke the Ten Commandments—He also wrote them on two stone tablets with His own finger.

16. Matthew 5:18-19 God's Ten Commandment Law (including the fourth commandment) is everlasting, just as Jesus said.

17. Deuteronomy 10:1-5 God's Ten Commandments are sacred.

18. Ezekiel 20:20 Resting on God's Sabbath day is a sign that we accept Him as the true God.

19. Isaiah 56:6-7 God has pronounced a special blessing on all Gentiles who rest on His Sabbath day.

20. Isaiah 56:2 God promises to bless everyone who rests on the Sabbath day (Saturday).

21. Isaiah 58:13-14 God will bless us if we enjoy the Sabbath and call it "honorable".

22. Isaiah 58:12-14 The Bible prophesied that in these last days God's people will rediscover and restore His rest day to its rightful place.

24. Luke 4:16 When Jesus, the Son of God, was on earth He rested and worshipped on the Sabbath day.

25. John 15:10 Jesus lovingly obeyed all His Heavenly Father's commandments.

26. Matthew 12:9-13 Instead of abolishing it, Jesus carefully taught us how to rest on the Sabbath.

27. Mark 3:1-6 Jesus elevated the Sabbath as a day God created to bring blessing to all mankind.

28. Matthew 24:20 Jesus instructed His followers to pray that they would be able to set apart the Sabbath day as a holy day even in war time.

29. Luke 23:56 The day after Jesus' crucifixion found His followers resting on the Sabbath.

30. Acts 13:27 In the New Testament the Apostle Paul refers to the seventh day as "The Sabbath" more than ten years after Jesus was raised from the dead.

31. Acts 13:44 Luke called Saturday "The Sabbath" nearly thirty years after Jesus' resurrection.

32. Acts 15:19-21 According to Scripture, all the Christian churches and Gentile converts were regularly worshipping on the Sabbath day.

33. Acts 16:13 The first Christians referred to the seventh day as "The Sabbath" as they assembled to pray and preach the Gospel.

34. Act 17:2, 3 Like Jesus,it was also Paul's custom to go to church on the Sabbath day to preach the Gospel.

35. Acts 13:14,44; 16:13; 17:2; 18:4,11 The book of Acts alone lists some 84 religious meetings that were held by Christians on the Sabbath.

37. Acts 25:7-8 In all the charges that the Jews brought against Paul, never once did they accuse him of failing to keep the Sabbath day holy.

39. Never once in the Bible does the word "Sabbath" refer to the first day of the week (Sunday).

45. Matthew 5:17 Jesus specifically stated: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."

46. Matthew 5:18 Jesus also specifically stated: "I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law."

47. Isaiah 66:22-23 The Sabbath day will be set apart by all the saved for all eternity as a holy day of rest and worship.

There will be some people who will deny that the Sabbath Day is Saturday and there will others who will say you're not saved if you're not gathering on Saturday. We need to allow the Lord to impress our hearts through His Word and through the working of the Holy Spirit in love and truth. God calls us to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling.

Philippians 2:12-14 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings.

When you love someone you do things to make that person happy and in doing so it's not a burden for you. We don't obey the commandments of God to be forgiven. We are forgiven in spite of obeying the commantments though what Jesus has done for us, that's why we love Him. When we express our love for Him in obeying His commandments we become open for Him to fill us with His love.

John 14:21 The one who obeys me is the one who loves me; and because he loves me, my Father will love him; and I will too, and I will reveal myself to him.''

If you love God, keep His commandments as an expression of your love, you will be blessed.

There is also a special anointing or blessing when we gather on the seventh day because it's the only day that God blessed and made for us.

Genesis 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Mark 2:27 And He said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.

Blessings in Christ,
John

Why should we expect the Jews to come and listen on Sunday? Why not go to them on Saturday (the Sabbath)?
Of course, would we not also go to preach to the Muslims on Friday?
I'm not sure that the day of the week on which we gather to worship is that important.
Remember one of Paul's indictments of the Galatians, "You observe days and months and seasons and years." (Gal 4:7) Our focus should not be the day of the week but rather the Lord of that day and every day.

bjh: Which is EXACTLY why Paul went to the synagogues as is recorded in acts - NOT to endorse what was being taught there - they were still teaching - and still do, that the Messiah will come. Paul knew by this point that the Messiah HAD come in the person of Jesus Christ. No, Paul went to the synagogues to teach and preach Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of the Scriptures - the Messiah.

Now - I’m not sure if you are aware of this, but there are 613 mitzvah or commandments of God given in the OT. Any Jewish person can tell you that amongst those 613 mitzvah there is not one single commandment to WORSHIP God on any set day of the week.

The Jews as a matter of tradition gathered on the Sabbath to be taught from the Tanach, but this was a matter of tradition not command from God.

However, if you look at history and at the scriptures in the context of History you will see that from the dawn of the church, Christians gathered together on the "Lord’s Day" which is the 8th day to share in the Eucharistic meal and the Agape meal. Paul on Saturday would go to the Jews, and on Sunday would come amongst the believers.

As far as observing the command to keep the Sabbath Holy - I say to you that if you have Christ in your heart, you should keep EVERY day holy.

Um...I'm not sure if this adds to anything but..

1. It's a good idea to set aside a day or a time to worship/prayer meeting. Consistency...

2. It's equally a good idea to glorify God everyday. If my mind is working properly, then it is also a Biblical commandement.

And um, please don't read into this too much.

Onwards!

Have you read Exodus 20?
"But the seventh day is the Sababth of the Lord thy God...."

He tells us not to work on it....verse 11..."...wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it."

He only has one day. The seventh day! SATURDAY

k4c: they are not JEWISH commandments they are God's commandments. If you take the time to read through them you will see that they each come from scripture and are well documented and explained. I fail to see how your labeling them as Jewish negates the fact that there is not one single commandment in the OT regarding worshiping on Saturday. NOW - Since the Sabbath was given to the Jews via the Torah, how is it that it there is not a single commandment in the scriptures which require them to worship on the Sabbath? EASY - It was not a command of God.

can you post just one scripture where it says that we are to worship on onay given day of the week? I see lots of scriptures saying to "keep it holy" but none that say worship God on this day.
we are to worship God, every day, every minute and every second of our lives, worship isnt just singing and praising it is living the faith, helping others etc etc, God should be on your mind 24/7.

God only ever told us to worship him on one day. We are His every day. But there is only one day that He has ever made Holy.

This idea that every day is a day of worship does not come from God. Sure we can worship God on any given day but that does not make that day Holy.

The gathering together of the saints is recorded as occurring on the Lord's day. It is on the Lord's Day that the church, which is the body of Christ, gathers together for the celebration of the Eucharist. This gathering is ORIGINAL to the church. The Sabbath for a Christian (as Marcus points out), expanded. No longer do the people of God only keep one day holy and set apart unto God - but we who have Christ within us should keep EVERY DAY, all day Holy and separated unto the Lord.

History and scriptures both demonstrate that the only time the apostles entered the synagogues on the Sabbath was to preach and teach Jesus Christ. They did not go there to worship. They went there to proclaim the gospel to unbelievers. THEN, on the 8th day - the day of a NEW creation , the saints of God gather together for worship and fellowship. It's all there in the historic texts for all eyes to see. SOME of these texts PREDATE the gospels and the epistles!

If you wish to keep the Sabbath of the old covenant in denial of the New, you are welcome to do so. It is after all your choice.

Hello again,

What do you think it means then the bible says that Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath?

Truth in love,
John
doesn't matter what I think, what did He say?

Genesis 2
3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Mark 2
27Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

Colossians 2
16Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

Hi Br.Max,

You quote these verses but how do they apply to what you are saying.
John I did not quote any verse that was some one else. Remember that I have been the one asking you to post a verse which instructs us to worship on Saturday

JOhn: do you believe that we should worship on the sabbath? or that it is wrong to gather on the first day of the week?

id like to goto church everyday, whether its holy or not. If one day is holier than the next thats fine, if not thats fine. When i say we have to worship 24/7, its not limited to just church, prayer is a form of worship, singing, good deeds, sharing the gospel, whatever it maybe. And that you need to do 24/7 well if your sleepin i suppose god will understand.

I dunno, cya

Doc: I belong to a religious order. HENCE my Name being Brother Max. The building I live in serves double duty as a sanctuary for specific services and a residence hall for members of the order. I get the fun Job of being the Superior of the House - which means I'm the one that the authorities call out on the carpet when things are wrong in the house. I also get to live in the room next to the chapel It's nice to have the presence of the Lord in ones house. I for one love it!
