  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The thing that gets me is.. Creationists are always harping on "everything must have a creator"... well, who created god?

:| But God doesn't need a cause.

 Yes, He does.
:| Does not!
 Does too.
:| No.. um.. because.. I'm wearing special pleading armour and...I don't want to play any more!

Ok. So I gave Townhall the benefit of a doubt (ought I to have known better by now?) and read the article.

My assessment of it is this: the author falls into the trap of generalizing his specific case to many other people. In his case, his shame and fear at not being welcomed prevented him from returning to christianity even though he 'knew' that it was true for him. So then, he argues that cognitive dissonance might account for atheism better than theism.

I'm sure there are some people out there who are atheist not because they have no reason to believe but because they want to avoid obligations that might come with theism. Likewise I'm sure there are quite some theists who claim theism only because they are afraid of how they would be treated were they known to not be.

However, I don't believe that this cognitive dissonance applies to every theist or atheist.

The time I spent reading the article... can I have it back?

Becoming Atheist doesn't get you out of your responsibilities to your country, society, fellow man, etc. Which may be why Atheists do not turn amoral when they decide to be Atheists.

It does gets rid of the need to spend extra hours praying to a God that never answers, or worrying what will happen when you die.
When you die...

Did you really think those words through when you just wrote them?

When you die...

Was your mind clear?

When you die...

Do you know everything about those three little words?

When you die...

Have you ever truly sat and contemplated the depth of those words?

When you die...

All alone when no one is around, and you get to sit in silence and take some real time to think it through; do you think you can honestly ponder those three little words?

When you die...

Can you truly say without any hesitation that you do not fear the impact of these three little words?

When you die...

WHERE WILL YOU SPEND ETERNITY???

I'll live again, although the atheist would believe nothing happens as I understand it. To each their own, though.

Wherever the atoms that once composed my then-decomposed body happen to go.

Do you mean my consciousness? That kind of depends on those atoms sticking together as a functional, living brain ... which tends to stop functioning and living once we die. No more brain = no more consciousness. i.e. "I" won't spend anything anywhere.

I suspect he did. I often think about what I write.

Sure. Why not? Stop being patronising.

I will probably be rotting, and therefore spend nowhere for eternity. I wouldn't exist to utilise eternity.

WHERE WILL YOU SPEND ETERNITY???

So now I'm up in heaven with St. Peter
By the pearly gates
And it's obvious he doesn't like
The Nehru jacket that I'm wearing
He tells me that they've got a dress code

Well, he lets me into heaven anyway
But I get the room next to the noisy ice machine
For all eternity
And every day he runs by screaming

Good morning, children. Can you say Pascal's Wager? Good. I know you could.
