It’s time for the fourth volume. Once again, I don’t own the Left Behind series or any of the canon characters. All rights go to Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. I only own my OC’s. Hope you enjoy.

Prologue

***
Josiah saw smoke from the bombers outside. He got out his phone and called Molly.

"Molly, there was a explosion!", said Josiah, "It might be a bomb!"

"We've heard the same thing", said Molly.

"Molly, you, Aneurin, and Santiago get to the basement at once!"

"We're on it!" Then they hanged up.

****
Aneurin, Santiago and Molly went down to the basement when the explosions was going on. Aneurin turned on the smart TV there to see what was happening.

"This breaking story" said the news anchor, "An explosion in northwest suburban Arlington Heights. We have a reporter on the way. Wait, excuse me. I’m told we have a woman on the phone who’s at the scene. Hello? Ma’am?”

“There were planes and then

“Planes? This was some kind of an attack?”

“An attack. That’s exactly what it was.”

“And where are you?”

“Near the old racecourse off Euclid,” she said. “They’re still comin’ in and droppin’ their bombs.”

“Don’t you know the target?”

“No, but it was south of me. I can see the smoke from my front window.”

There was various reports. Bombs were dropping in various areas: London, Washington, DC, Cairo. Even the White House was taken out and President Fitzhugh had been killed. Aneurin figured it had to be the second seal, the red horseman of war. If that were so, then the black horse of famine and ecomonic collaspe and the pale horse of death wasn't that far off.

****
Rayford and Amanda, and Buck and Chloe had gone to the hospital to see Bruce. Rayford went in, and saw that Bruce was being wheeled out. It was revealed that Bruce had died. Chaya learned that Judith had become a believer before she died. Josiah decided to call Molly and tell her and the others the news. When Molly answered her phone, she put it on speaker phone.

"Josiah, is Bruce alright?", asked Aneurin.

"I'm afraid not", said Josiah, "He didn't make it."

"Oh no!", said Molly, letting out a sob.

"So Bruce is dead?", asked Santiago.

"Yeah, that's right", said Josiah.

Josiah told them that he would call Robert, Lucille, and Ashton, and tell them of the same news. He told them to stay in the basement until he got off work. They hanged up soon after. Josiah called Robert and Lucille and told them of the same news. Then he called Ashton and told them of the same news. It was breaking news: WWIII had broken out and it had been chaos!

*****
When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and wine.
Revelation 6:5-6

[We shall see how this one will unfold, with the Antichrist taking control and where the world stands]

Chapter I

***
Bruce and Lucille watched the news of the war. They were both saddened to hear the news of Bruce Barnes’s death, and were mourning. Bruce Barnes, who had taught them and had mentor them. Now he was gone!

“He’s reunited with his wife and children, Hon”, said Robert.

“I know”, said Lucille, “And we’ll see him again.“

They knew there were going to be hardships in the days ahead.

***
Aneurin, Santiago, and Molly had been in the basement, watching the news reports of the war. Everett arrived from the militia and joined them. He explained the traffic.

“We have news”, said Santiago with a tear, “Bruce is dead.”

”Oh no!”, said Everett.

The four kids were mourning for Bruce, their mentor. About a couple of hours later, Ashton and Josiah came home and join them in the basement. Everett could tell that they were both in tears.

”How…?”, Molly asked in tears, “Why?”

”I don’t understand this anymore than you do”, answered Josiah, “Though we are right to mourn for Bruce. We shouldn’t try to bury the grief.”

”Is that so?”, asked Aneurin.

“Yes. Grieving is actually healthy and we shouldn’t try to hold it back.”

”The shortest verse is ‘Jesus wept’‘, said Everett.

“He was mourning the death of Lazarus”, said Ashton, “Even though He knew that He would raise him from the dead.”

“The Bible says we are not to mourn“, said Josiah, “It says that we’re not to mourn in the same way who have no hope.”

“What does that mean?”, asked Molly.

Josiah explained that while they were sad that Bruce was gone, they knew he was in Heaven, reunited with his wife and children. They knew they would see him again. He explained that they shouldn’t grieve in the same way for an unbeliever who had died.

“Is there going to be a funeral service?”, asked Everett.

”I’m going to meet with Buck and Judd about that sometime this week”, answered Josiah.

Everett nodded. Josiah asked him about how were things going with the militia.

“I’m willing to defend our people”, said Everett, “Though know well that we can’t take down Carpathia. There are actually non-believers that are against him as well.”

”Is that so?”, asked Aneurin.

Everett explained that they haven’t prayed to become believers, though they don’t want to have anything to do with Carpathia. What days was there going to be moving forward, as Carpathia continued to take more control.

***
So much has happened since the war started. Ryan had gone to to the hospital to give a card to Bruce. However, on the way home, there was the explosion happened. He was kidnapped by a couple of men along with whom he thought to be a boy. However, it turned out to be a girl named Darrion Stahley. She also explained that she was a vegetarian. Ryan stashed the soda cans under his mattress.

“Never know when little things like this might come in handy,” he said.

Darrion explained her father’s business. “He did a lot of work for the Global Community after the disappearances,” she said. “They wanted to promote him, which we thought meant the East Coast. You know, New York, Washington, D.C. But he wound up here in the Midwest.”

“So your dad works for Nicolae Carpathia?” Ryan said.

Darrion nodded. “He’s met him lots of times,” she said. “My dad told me about it. He said when Nicolae shakes your hand, you feel like you’re the only person in the room. Like you’re really important to him. Nicolae remembers everybody’s name, you know.”

Ryan felt sick inside. That was exactly what Bruce had said about the Antichrist. He could manipulate people.

“Did you lose anybody in the disappearances?” Ryan asked.

“Just an aunt and an uncle,” Darrion said. “They were both crazy, though.”

“What was wrong with them?” Ryan said.

“Religious wackos,” Darrion said. “A few years ago they went over to Europe and got mixed up in some religious group. When they came home, they tried to get my dad to read the Bible and go to church with them.”

“And your dad didn’t buy it?”

“We’ve always been religious, open-minded. But they were so narrow. If you didn’t believe exactly what they did, you were cooked.”

“So if they were wrong, what do you think about God?”

“I believe in the unity of all living things. God is in us and in all that exists.”

“That’s why you’re a vegetarian.”

“Precisely.”

“So, when you eat a carrot, aren’t you eating God?” The words were out of Ryan’s mouth before he could stop them.

“I’m into Enigma Babylon One World Faith,” Darrion said, ignoring the comment. “It takes the best of all the belief systems. It’s not trying to hurt people like my aunt and uncle were.”

“You didn’t tell me they hurt you.”

“They tried to scare us. You know, they talked about hell. Made God out to be mean.”

The men were moving around in the next room. Ryan put a finger to his lips and silently crept to the door.

“If you’d have just kept going, we wouldn’t have to—”

“Don’t start!” the man said.

“Why do we have to wait till it gets dark?” the short man said. “Let’s do it now.”

“And how we gonna do it?”

The two men closed the door and went into another room.

“What did they say?” Darrion said.

“Looks like they’re gettin’ tired of me quicker than I thought,” Ryan said. “I’d better come up with something fast.”

Ryan prayed silently for an idea. “Please, God, show me how to get out of here. Unless this is where you want me to be. And if it is, open Darrion’s heart and let me talk with her about you.”

[This may be a sad way to start, but a good reminder that death isn’t the end of the story]

Chapter II

***
Josiah had gone to Bruce's old office at New Hope Village Church. He might have been an associate pastor there, though he felt he couldn't take over as the senior pastor and mentor. He felt he wasn't the right person for it. Sometime later, Molly came to see him.

"Josiah, what's going to happen with the Trib Force and the Young Trib Force?", asked Molly.

"I'm sure God will appoint the right person to mentor them", answered Josiah, "You know that Jesus said that the wars and the famine are the beginning of birth pains."

"Famine is what comes next, right?"

"Yes, the black horseman. Not only that, but food will get very expensive."

"I guess we better start stockpiling."

"We better stockpile to last us for the next few years. There's going to come a time where Carpathia is going to require everyone to bear some kind of identification, which I do think it's the Mark of the Beast, in order to buy or sell."

Molly shuddered at the thought. It was obvious that Nicolae Carpathia was gaining more control. But the time was going to come when he would require just about everyone to take his mark to buy or sale. Then what would become of believers? It would be time to stockpile on food for economic collapse and for that time when the mark will be required. And it had better be done fast!

*****
Buck sat in the sales manager’s office of a Land Rover dealership.

“You never cease to amaze me,” Chloe whispered.

“I’ve never been conventional, have I?”

“Hardly, and now I suppose any hope of normalcy is out the window.”

“I don’t need any excuse for being unique,” he said, “but everyone everywhere will be acting impulsively soon enough.”

The sales manager, who had busied himself with paperwork and figuring a price, turned the documents and slid them across the desk toward Buck. “You’re not trading the Lincoln, then?”

“No, that’s a rental,” Buck said. “But I am going to ask you to return that to O’Hare for me.” Buck looked up at the man without regard to the documents.

“That’s highly unusual,” the sales manager said. “I’d have to send two of my people and an extra vehicle so they could get back.”

Buck stood. “I suppose I am asking too much. Another dealer will be willing to go the extra mile to sell me a vehicle, I’m sure, especially when no one knows what tomorrow may bring.”

“Sit back down, Mr. Williams. I won’t have any trouble getting my district manager to sign off on throwing in that little errand for you. As you can see, you’re going to be able to drive your fully loaded Range Rover out of here within an hour for under six figures.”

“Make it half an hour,” Buck said, “and we’ve got a deal.”

The sales manager rose and thrust out his hand. “Deal.”

*****
Molly came back to the house. She told the boys that she had a talk with Josiah in Bruce's office.

"He said that food will get expansive", said Molly, "That's the next horseman of the apolcylpse."

"The black horse", said Aneurin, "So we should start stockpiling."

"He also said that there will come a time when Carpathia is going to require people to take his mark to buy or sale."

"The Mark of the Beast", said Everett.

"If we're going to stockpile on food and clothing for when that time comes", said Santiago, "When better do it fast."

[A lot is happening. Do you think believers should start stockpiling on supplies in preparation for the economic collapse and for when the mark of the beast sets in?]

Chapter III

***
Judd led Chaya and Vicki to the darkened church basement. They walked through the fellowship hall, down a narrow corridor, past the washrooms and the furnace room. They were now at the end of the hallway with no light.

“They did the excavation on the other side of this wall,” Judd said.

He felt around the concrete blocks. Nothing. They returned to the furnace room, and Judd flipped on the light switch. A flashlight rested atop the furnace. Judd flicked it on and scanned the back wall closely. He found the furnace and a hot-water heater. Nothing out of the ordinary.

“Wait,” Chaya said as Judd turned to leave. “That back wall is weird. There’s nothing hanging there or pushed against it. It’s wasted space.”

The three felt along the back wall. Suddenly, Judd found an indentation about the size of his hand. Judd braced his feet and pushed hard. The three looked in amazement as a section of the wall slid open.

“I’m not goin’ in there,” Vicki said.

“What if Ryan’s down here, hiding?” Judd said. “What if he’s hurt?”

“We know that can’t be,” Vicki said. “Don’t we?”

Vicki followed them in, and Judd pushed the wall closed behind them.

“Whatever’s down here needs to be kept a secret,” Judd said.

There was a smell of wet earth and cement. The flashlight illuminated a sign directly in front of them and six steps down: “Danger! High Voltage. Authorized Personnel Only.”

They moved down the steps and took a left. Four more steps down was a huge steel door. The sign at the landing of the stairs was duplicated on the door. The knob was locked.

“Dead end,” Vicki said.

“Who would have the key?” Chaya said.

“Bruce would,” Judd said, “but it doesn’t have a keyhole. There must be some other way to get it open.”

He jiggled the door and banged on it. No luck. Judd led them back up the steps to the entrance.

“Wait,” Vicki said. “Shine the light over here.”

Judd pointed the light to the wall behind the secret entrance. They ran their hands over it, and this time Chaya squealed in delight.

“It’s a handprint, just like the one outside, only a little lower,” Chaya said.

She leaned into it, and the wall gave way a few inches. Judd put the flashlight down and helped. They moved inside the darkened room and listened. Vicki felt for a light switch but tripped. Judd heard paper rattling. Then Vicki began to laugh.

“Are you okay?” Judd said as he retrieved the flashlight and shone it in her face.

“This is it!” Vicki said excitedly. “We found it!”

Judd found a light switch.

“Incredible,” Chaya said.

Around the room, in stacks of fifty each, were the Bibles Ryan had confiscated. Vicki had knocked over a small stack by the door.

“Look at this,” Chaya said.

In the corner was a small table with a lamp. Beside it was a picture of Ryan with his mother and father. Next to it was a picture taken only a few weeks earlier of Ryan and Bruce. He also had photos of Lionel, Vicki, and Judd, a photo of Bruce and his family, and one of Phoenix. In the middle of the table was a spiral notebook. Vicki opened it.

“Bruce said I should keep a diary of the things I think about, so I’m going to do it here,” Vicki read out loud. “Bruce said this could be my secret place. If anything ever happens to me, he can tell the others where I’m hiding the Bibles.”

“There must be hundreds in here,” Chaya said.

“We’ve already given a few hundred away,” Judd said. “The room must have been packed.”

“Listen to this,” Vicki said. “Sometimes I feel really lonely and I want my mom and dad to come back. I wish they could be here so I could tell them what I’ve learned and what I know about God. But I do have good friends.” Vicki choked up.

“Maybe we’d better not read it,” Judd said. “I mean, if he’s alive and we find him, he’ll be mad.”

“Yeah,” Vicki said. “I like that attitude.”

***
Lionel returned from the police station and sat by the phone, hating every minute. He wanted to do something to find Ryan. But there was nothing he could do. He had called every possible place Ryan could be. As he sat by the phone, he had an overwhelming urge to pray for Ryan, like he was in danger.

“Give him strength, Father God,” Lionel prayed. “Watch over him and protect him.”

****
Robert had been doing some studyiny in his and Lucille's condo. His phone rang, and saw it was Josiah, who had been at New Hope Village Church. He answered it.

"Josiah", said Robert.

"Robert, you're not going to believe what some of the members of the Young Trib Force found in the church basement", said Josiah.

"What's that?"

"Well, remember how Ryan had the idea to stash Bibles?"

"Yes, I remember that."

"Well, they've found the place he did it. Bruce was having a basement build for a shelter in preparation for the war. Next to it, Ryan had Bibles stashed. I went in there to check it out myself."

"Wow. Lucille and I should go and check it out sometimes."

Josiah and Robert said a word of prayer over the phone, and they hanged up.

"Josiah said that Ryan had stashed Bibles next to the church basement", Robert said to Lucille.

"Really?", asked Lucille, "I knew Bruce was having something built in preparation for the war. But I had no idea Bibles would be stashed there."

"Oh yes. We should check it out. Oh, and also to start stockpiling on food since it's going to get expensive as a result of the war."

Lucille knew Robert was right. The next seal judgment would be real soon: famine and economic collapse. Then there will also be the pale horse of death: a quarter of the earth's population would be gone.

***
Josiah had come home when Everett turned on the smart TV to see what the GCN reports were saying about the war.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the reporter said, “from an unknown location, we bring you live, Global Community Potentate Nicolae Carpathia.”

"Here it comes", said Molly.

"Brothers and sisters of the Global Community,” Carpathia said. “I am speaking to you with the greatest heaviness of heart I have ever known. I am a man of peace who has been forced to retaliate with arms against international terrorists. You may rest assured that I grieve with you over the loss of loved ones, of friends, of acquaintances. The horrible toll of civilian lives should haunt these enemies of peace for the rest of their days. As you know, most of the ten world regions that comprise the Global Community destroyed 90 percent of their weapon hardware. We have spent nearly the last two years breaking down, packaging, shipping, receiving, and reassembling this hardware in New Babylon. My humble prayer was that we would never have had to use it. However, wise counselors persuaded me to stockpile these weapons in strategic locations around the globe. I confess I did this against my will. Now it appears that decision was a good on. In my wildest dreams, I never would have imagined that I would have to turn this power against enemies on a broad scale. The forces were led by the now late president of the United States of North America, Gerald Fitzhugh. While I should never have to defend my reputation as an antiwar activist, I am pleased to inform you that we have retaliated severely and with dispatch. Anywhere that Global Community weaponry was used, it was aimed specifically at rebel military locations. I assure you that all casualties were the work of the rebellion. There are no more plans for counterattacks by Global Community forces, We will respond only as necessary and pray that our enemies understand that they have no future. They cannot succeed. They will be destroyed. I know that in a time of global war such as this, most of us live in fear and grief. I can assure you that I am with you in your grief but that my fear has been overcome by confidence that the majority of the global community is together, heart and soul, against the enemies of peace. As soon as I am convinced of security and safety, I will address you via satellite television and the Internet. I will communicate frequently so you know exactly what is going on and will see that we are making enormous strides toward rebuilding our world. You may rest assured that as we reconstruct and reorganize, we will enjoy the greatest prosperity and the most wonderful home this earth can afford. May we all work together for the common goal."

Josiah turned the smart TV off at once. He knew full well that it was obvious that Nicolae Carpathia was taking full control. And what else? Nothing would be able to stop him.

[It was time to prepare for harder times]

Chapter IV

***
Samuel Goldberg, an Israeli teen, was a neighbor of Dr. Tsion Ben-Judah and his family. His two children, Nina and Dan had gone to school, though Samuel was sick that day. He stayed home when he heard a commotion outside. He got out his camera and recorded a video of what was happening. A van pulled into a parking space down the street. No one got out. The glass was tinted, so Sam couldn’t see who it was. It just sat there. Mrs. Ben-Judah came outside for something, and he saw movement inside the van, just shadows. He got out his video camera and used the zoom lens to get a better look. Dr. Ben-Judah’s driver pulled up. Nina and Dan got out. They went into their house. They passed the two guards at the front door, posted by Dr. Ben-Judah for his family’s safety. Sam turned off the camera, then turned it back on before it started. There were shouts on the street and confusion. Sam froze, the put the camera on the windowsill and went into the other room. One Israeli officer in a mask stood by the van and waited. Shots rang out inside the house. More shouting. Then Mrs. Ben-Judah was dragged outside.

"Mother!", Nina cried out.

“Where is he?” the Israeli officer said. “Where is the rabbi?”

“I will not betray my father!” Nina screamed.

“Tell us now!” the man screamed back.

In the face of death, Nina would not give them any information. Dan was dragged out last. A man ran to the van and then carried a container inside the house.

“Spare your life,” the Israeli officer sneered at Dan. “Tell us where your father is.”

Dan stammered and looked into the face of his hooded captor.

“Now! Before it is too late!” the man screamed.

“Let me see your face,” Dan finally said.

The man was standing over Dan and facing the camera. He lifted his mask and bent low. He had a heavy, black beard and a mustache. “Now, tell me! Where is Tsion Ben-Judah?”

Dan spat in the man’s face.

“You insolent—”

“I would rather die than betray my father!” Dan said.

Those were Dan’s last words. A crackling sound grew in the background.

One of the other officers yelled, “The rabbi is not inside. What now?”

“To the university,” another said.

As the van pulled away, there was a siren in the distance. Neighbors waited a few moments, then rushed to look at the three lifeless bodies. Sam came and turned the camera off.

****
Some much has happened. Judd and Vicki, with the help of Maxwell Stahley, found Ryan and their new friend Darrion. Max had a talked with Darrion, believing that his brother Ken and sister in law Linda were about God. However, Maxwell was shot, though he prayed to become a believer as he was dying. Darrion prayed to become a believer, and joined the Young Trib Force.

***
Judd met with Buck, Robert, and Josiah, in preparation for Bruce's funeral service. Buck quickly explained that Chloe had received a message from her father to get out of downtown Chicago. She was talking with Buck on a cell phone with a cop right behind her. Chloe didn’t want to stop. Then the bombing began. Chloe’s Range Rover was thrown off Lake Shore Drive and landed in a tree. That’s where she stayed until Buck found her.

“I’m not sure how much Nicolae Carpathia knows about my faith, but he’s sure to find out at some point. We have to be ready for whatever comes.”

“Is Verna Zee a Christian too?” Judd said, referring to Buck’s coworker, also staying at Loretta’s house.

"Verna Zee?", asked Robert, "My dad worked with her for the Global Weekly."

"That's right and no,” Buck said. “I may have put myself in real danger when I brought her here. My hope is that she’ll hear the message and respond. If not, I’m in trouble. Carpathia hasn’t given any indication he suspects anything, but if Verna tells my superiors, it’s only a matter of time.”

“Do you talk with Carpathia?” Judd said.

“Last night in fact,” Buck said. “He wanted to know about the coverage of the war here. His voice got real emotional when I told him. He said it was a tragedy.”

“Makes me sick,” Judd said. “Is that all he said?”

“No, he wanted me to come over there and cover meetings in Baghdad and New Babylon.”

“You’re not going?” Judd said.

“I told him I was working another story,” Buck said. “He’s getting another guy.”

As they talked, Buck turned his attention to the papers scattered across the dining-room table.

“Bruce’s notes,” he said. “Chloe had them with her in the Rover. I have to put them back together.”

Josiah looked at it Judd helped get the transcripts in order. Buck had a huge job ahead of him. He not only had to read the massive pile of pages but also edit it for the church.

“Can I ask about the other story you’re working on?” Judd said.

Buck reached for the phone. “Hang on,” he said.

Buck called Ken Ritz, a pilot who had flown him to New York just after the disappearances. “I know you’re busy and probably don’t need my business,” Buck said, “but you also know I’m on a big, fat expense account and can pay more than anyone else.”

Judd wondered where Buck needed to go so soon after his wife’s accident.

“Israel,” Buck said to Ken Ritz. “And I have to be back here by Saturday night at the latest.”

Then Buck hanged up soon after.

"You're going to Israel?", asked Josiah.

“Why Israel?” Judd asked Buck. “I’ve heard that’s the one place the war hasn’t touched.”

“I’m not covering the war,” Buck said.

“Then why go?”

“I’m not sure how much I should tell you, for your own safety.”

“With what we’ve been through. I don’t think you could tell me anything that would endanger my life more than us hiding family members of a Global Community traitor.”

“In the middle of trying to find Chloe yesterday, I got a call from Dr. Chaim Rosenzweig. He’s friends with Rabbi Tsion Ben-Judah.”

Judd reminded Buck he had met the rabbi’s wife and two children on his trips to Israel. Robert and Josiah mentioned how they and Asthon have met the rabbi's two children as well. Buck looked away.

“And Bruce kept us up to date", said Judd.

"It was exciting to watch the rabbi speak to all the new believers in Teddy Kollek Stadium", said Josiah.

"So what’s happened?”, asked Judd.

“They can’t find him,” Buck said, “Dr. Rosenzweig said he was going to Nicolae for help, and I begged him to leave Carpathia out of it. I haven’t heard anything more, but I assume the prophecy from the two witnesses at the Wailing Wall is correct. Dr. Ben-Judah will be protected in spite of the murders. So I feel I have to—”

“Wait,” Judd said. “What murders?”

Buck stared at him. “I found this out from Dr. Rosenzweig. He respects Dr. Ben-Judah but couldn’t understand why such an educated man would throw away his reputation by proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah. He was afraid religious zealots would kill Ben-Judah.”

“And they did?” Judd said, holding his breath.

Buck shook his head. “Chaim called to tell me about the rabbi’s wife and children.”

"The rabbi's wife and two children were murdered?", asked Josiah.

Buck’s voice grew tense. “All killed,” he said. “I’m very sorry. Chaim said Ben-Judah’s house was burned to the ground.

“Are you sure it was them?” Judd managed.

“Chaim says it was a public spectacle. I assume the rabbi is in hiding. At least I hope so.”

“That’s why you’re going to Israel?” Judd said.

“It’s not what Carpathia thinks, but yes. I need to find the rabbi.”

Buck shook hands with Robert and Josiah, thanking him for helping to make arrangemetns for Bruce's funeral.

***
Josiah drove home, not believing what he just heard. He couldn't imagine the pain of having a wife and child murdered neither did he want to have to experience that! He would like to go to Israel, and perhaps do some investigation. His sister, Phoebe, had been with the Israeli police. Perhaps she could solved something and if Dr. Ben Judah was being framed, she could do something to clear his name.

[So a bit of a murder investigation]

Judd called Ryan into the meeting and told them about the Ben-Judah family. The kids were crushed. Ryan said he had been looking forward to meeting Nina and Dan and helping them adjust to American society. Vicki stared off into space.

“I wonder if that’s what we’ll have to go through,” Lionel said. “The persecution of people who believe in Jesus is increasing.”

“This is going to hit Chaya hard,” Vicki said. “She thought the Ben-Judahs might talk to her father.”

Judd told them of his desire to go to Israel.

“I want to make sure,” he said. “I think God is drawing me back there, and it may be because the family isn’t really dead.”

“You don’t trust Dr. Rosenzweig?” Vicki said.

“I don’t trust anyone who says Nicolae Carpathia is a good man,” Judd said.

“It’s not fair,” Ryan said. “You’ve been to Israel twice, and Bruce promised. You ought to take me.”

“Hang on,” Lionel said. “You’re going to Israel because you have some kind of feeling?”

“I can’t explain it,” Judd said.

“What if it’s a bad piece of pizza?” Lionel said. “Come on, Judd, we can’t just go running off whenever we feel like it.”

The phone rang. Lionel looked at the caller ID.

“No number,” he said.

“Let’s get out of here,” Judd said.

****
Josiah went to his house. Robert and Lucille had arrived as well. Josiah told the others of the murders of Mrs. Ben-Judah, and Nina and Dan. Everett could not believe it: he was looking forward to meeting Nina and Dan.

"I feel like God wants me to go to Israel", said Josiah, "Perhaps I should check things out about the murder. My sister is with the Israeli police there, so I should talk with her..."

"Perhaps I should go as well", said Everett, "Nina and Dani would have been great additions to the Young Trib Society."

"Bruce said I would have the next trip", said Santiago, then he got out his passport. He said that he gave it to him when he was about 12, and took him on a flight to Spain.

"But how are we going to get a flight?", asked Everett.

"I can arrange that", said Robert.

Robert made arrangements, and he had Josiah, Everett, and Santiago booked on a flight to Israel. He met with his superior captain, Nick Edwards, and got the flight ready.

****
Lucille stayed at Josiah's house with Ashton, Aneurin, and Molly. They got settled in and would watch for the news.

"It's one thing for Robert to be a pilot", said Lucille, "He believes it's what God wants him to do, and I do as well."

"What is it?", asked Aneurin.

"I don't know... I mean, I support him in taking Josiah, Everett, and Santiago to Israel. But they could be in a dangerous spot."

"That's where we are anyways, right?", asked Aneurin, "If the prophecies are correct, then persecution against those who are believers is only going to increase."

"What should we do about Bruce's service?", asked Molly.

"We should announce it on the Hidden Truth webpage... as well as an invitation."

Aneurin and Molly knew they couldn't get a physical copy to the schools, which was starting real soon. Aneurin would be a senior, and Molly a sophomore. Aneurin realized that being a senior would be different than he thought. He wondered if he would ever finished his senior year and graduate. There wasn't any guarantee that he would.

****
Josiah, Everett, and Santiago boarded the plane to Israel. Santiago admitted it's been a long time since he flown across an ocean. So he was enjoying it while he could.

"Anything we'll see in Israel?", asked Santiago.

"We might get a close up of Eli and Moishe", answered Josiah, "Those are the two witnesses."

"It is something to hear them", said Everett, "It's even better up close."

****
Loretta was glad to see Vicki.

“You can use that apartment as long as you need it,” she said.

“I don’t want to impose,” Vicki said.

“That’s the last time I want to hear a thing about it,” Loretta said. Vicki smiled, and the two hugged.

Verna Zee joined them at the kitchen table. Vicki could tell by the way Loretta served food and coffee that hospitality came naturally to her. She could also tell that Verna wasn’t a people person. When Loretta talked, Verna fidgeted with her napkin. Verna was probably perfect at barking orders in the newsroom, but she was out of her element here over coffee and cookies. The conversation turned to Bruce. Loretta politely asked if Verna had ever been involved in a church.

“That’s a laugh,” Verna said. “I’ve probably been to church about a dozen times my whole life. And that includes weddings and funerals. My dad was an atheist. My mom grew up in a strict home. Her parents said it was evil to watch TV. Couldn’t go to dances or drink anything stronger than soda, and that may have been too strong, I don’t know. When she got old enough, she turned her back on religion and said yes to my father. Then I came along.”

“So you never went to church as a child or as an adult?” Loretta said.

“The idea of attending church was never discussed,” Verna said. “Wasn’t an option.”

“And what do you think about God now?” Loretta said.

“I don’t think about it,” Verna said. “I figure if there is a God out there, a force or a being of some sort, he’ll weigh my good and bad points.”

“But haven’t you ever been curious?” Loretta said. “Most people look for some kind of deeper meaning in life than what they see from day to day.”

“I don’t have time for deeper meaning,” Verna said. “I do what I do and leave it at that.”

“That seems kind of sad to me,” Vicki said. “Mr. Williams talks about journalism as a noble profession. Seeking truth and all that. But you’re saying—”

“Buck Williams and I are different people,” Verna said. “If he wants to be motivated by the truth, fine. But I don’t do it because a God is standing over me wagging his finger.”

Vicki backed off and let Loretta take over.

“I think what Vicki is saying is that without some kind of deeper purpose, life is empty", said Loretta, "To do what you do, you have to be motivated by more than your paycheck, right?”

“Look, I’ll admit I don’t live the happiest life on the planet,” Verna said. “I’m skeptical. I see the glass as half empty. But I like being this way.”

“What did you make of the disappearances?” Loretta said.

Verna shook her head. Loretta took a long sip of coffee and leaned back in her chair.

“Verna,” she said, “I’d like to tell a skeptical journalist the true story of what happened to me. That is, if you want to hear it.”

Verna looked about nervously and sighed. “I guess I don’t have anything better to do,” she said. “I’m listening.”

LORETTA began with her childhood. She had been raised in the South, where church was part of her routine.

“It was our meeting place,” Loretta said. “Social and spiritual at the same time. My father taught Sunday school. My mother led Bible studies in our home. But something was missing, and I didn’t realize what it was until the disappearances.”

Verna rolled her eyes. “You mean that it was God,” she said.

“You said a little bit ago that if there was a God, he could weigh your good and your bad,” Loretta said. “I’ve been a member of this church for more years than I care to admit. I’ve served on just about every committee and group they have. If somebody had made a list of people most likely to go to heaven, I’d have been at the top, right up there with the pastor.”

“And you don’t think you measured up?” Verna said.

“I know I didn’t measure up,” Loretta said, "The night people vanished, I went to the church and found Bruce Barnes, one of our pastors. We knew what had happened. We watched a video the senior pastor made. That’s when I understood my life was a fake. I wasn’t a true Christian.”

“This is all fascinating,” Verna said, “but—”

“Bruce Barnes taught me everything,” Loretta continued. “I learned more from him in the last two years than in the sixty before it combined. I’m not blamin’ anybody but myself. My daddy had gone on before, but I lost Mama, all six of my brothers and sisters, all of their kids, their kids’ husbands and wives. I lost my own children and grandchildren. Everybody. A couple of weeks before it happened, one of my daughters was over here with her children. I was reading one of those picture Bibles for little kids to my grandbaby. The child was no more than three years old, and she looked up at me with these huge, brown eyes and said, ‘Grandma, do you have Jesus living in your heart?’ I was so pleased. I was glad my grandkids were growing up in a good home. And if I’d have listened closer to what that little child was saying, I wouldn’t be here today.”

“If that were true, then I wouldn’t have a place to stay and you wouldn’t have a new sermon,” Verna said.

Loretta leaned closer. “I had the sermons memorized,” she said. “I didn’t have a relationship with God.”

***
Judd and Ryan met with the Stahley's private pilot, Taylor Graham, who was not much older than in his 20's. He appeared to be a swimmer, and was muscular. He boarded them on the plane, and flew them to Israel. When the plane made it past the East Coast, Judd and Ryan relaxed a little. Judd told Ryan he was lucky he didn’t have to endure the scrunched legroom of a commercial flight. In the Stahley jet, they could both get up and walk around.

“There are soft drinks and snacks in the kitchen area,” Graham said. Judd made the pilot some coffee and sat near the cockpit. “I knew the Global Community boys underestimated how tight Max and I were when they asked me to run the Dallas flight for them. I didn’t know what was up, but it was clear they trusted me and not him.”

“Did you find out stuff about Carpathia?” Judd said.

“Enough to make me think there was something wrong with the guy.“Max felt that way when he was checking out his brother’s death.”

Ryan looked at Judd. Judd knew what he was thinking. Maxwell Stahley’s brother and his wife hadn’t died. They had been raptured. Judd nodded at Ryan. “What else do you know about Carpathia?” he said.

“From Max and some of the security taps we had, I know he’s not too happy with that rabbi.”

“What do you think Carpathia’s next move will be?” Ryan said.

“The war has put him in a perfect position,” Graham said. “This is what he wanted. With people vulnerable, they’ll look for help. The Global Community will give it. With the one-world currency almost in place, he’s moving toward a cashless society.”

“Everything will be electronic?” Ryan said.

“Exactly,” Graham said. “And if he taxes every transaction, you can imagine the billions he’ll rake in for his New Babylon then.”

“How can people let him get away with all that?” Judd said. “You know he’s a fake, right?”

“I know Max had strong suspicions,” Graham said. “Carpathia wants to own the major media so he can control the press. He’ll replace the three ambassadors who revolted with leaders who agree with him. That’ll bring the Global Community back to ten regions.”

“Ten leaders!” Ryan said. “Can you believe it?”

“What?” Graham said. “Did I miss something?”

Judd wondered again if Graham could be trusted fully. A man who would risk his life for them surely needed to know why Nicolae Carpathia was doing these things. But should he hear it from me? Judd thought. Could giving him that information prove costly in the future?

Chapter VI

***
Josiah turned on the TV that was on the plane to see what was happening. People were crowding around an airplane tarmac. The flight crew, followed by seven ambassadors, gathered around the microphones. Finally the camera pulled back to show Nicolae Carpathia descending the plane’s steps. He appeared concerned, grave, and yet somehow purposeful and confident.

"Unbelievable", Josiah winced.

As lights flashed and cameras whirred, Carpathia resolutely approached the bank of microphones. Every network insignia on each microphone had been redesigned to include the letters GCN, the Global Community Network.

"So Carpathia is taking over the world", said Everett.

****
Lucille had turned on the TV and they saw the same thing happening. She was glad to see that Rayford Steele was alright. There was also his new co-pilot, Montogramy Cleburn McCullum, who went by "Mac". He was tall and thin with reddish gray hair and freckled. A woman broke from the crowd and ran directly for him. Security guards who stepped in her way quickly realized who she was and let her through.

"That's Hattie", said Aneurin at once, "She's Carpathia's fiancee!"

****
Robert decided to take a break, and he saw the same news on the TV that was put on. He was glad that Rayford was safe. Nick put plane on auto pilot and he saw the same news.

"Wait, is that Hattie?", asked Robert seeing the young woman.

"Who is she?", asked Nick.

"She's Carpathia's fiancee", answered Josiah.

Robert heard that Buck had introduced Hattie to Carpathia not long after the Rapture. He even heard that they were somehow involved. But it would never had occurred to him that they would be engaged. Surely, the most powerful man in the world and the Antichrist wouldn't be married! Carpathia welcomed Hattie to his side, but it was clear he was upset. Hattie leaned in to kiss him, and Carpathia pulled her ear to his mouth and whispered something. Hattie looked stricken. Hattie tried to pull away from Carpathia, but he grabbed her wrist and kept her standing next to him at the microphones.

“It is so good to be back where I belong,” Carpathia said. “It is wonderful to reunite with loved ones. My fiancée is overcome with grief, as I am, at the horrible events that began a few hours ago. This is a difficult time in which we live, and yet our horizons have never been wider, our challenges so great, our future so bright. Even though we have all suffered a great tragedy, I believe we are destined for prosperity if we commit to standing together. We will stand against any enemy of peace and embrace any friend of the Global Community.”

The crowd, including the press, applauded with just the right solemnity.

***
"Poor girl", said Lucille, after seeing Carpathia and Hattie on the news. She heard from Robert how Buck had introduced Hattie to Carpathia not long after the Rapture. She even knew they were somehow involved romantically.

"You don't think the Antichrist will be marry, do you?", asked Molly.

"I don't think it says", said Aneurin, "But it's most likely he won't. Who knows where this relationship will go?"

****
In the meantime, Robert, Josiah, Everett and Santiago made it to Israel. Robert went to rent a car. It was quite a drive from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. What astounded him that Israel was not affected by the war.

"Any idea where we're staying?", asked Santiago.

"I've booked a room for all of us at the King David Hotel", said Josiah, "I've just texted my sister, and she'll met us in the lobby there."

"Good idea", said Everett.

Chapter VII

***
Ashton arrived at the police station in Chicago. It hadn't really been the same since Cole was killed in a gun fight as they were escorting LeRoy Banks and Cornelius Grey to the lock-ups. Banks had been in custody, though no one knew what became of Grey.

"Ashton", said Eddie, a young homicide detective who was involved with arresting Banks and Grey, "You know, I've still be thinking..."

"You're still thinking about God?", asked Ashton.

"Well, yeah. I was wondering if I could still speak with your pastor."

Ashton shook his head gravely, telling Eddie how Bruce had died from some kind of virus in the midst of the war that had broken out. Eddie said he was sorry to hear that.

"You might have to wait until his associate pastor, Josiah, gets back from Israel", said Ashton.

"It's that the young Jewish nurse you've told me about?", asked Eddie.

"Oh yes. He's very energetic, down to earth. We just had no idea he would be an associate pastor as well as being a registered nurse. But with Nicolae Carpathia taking control of the world, who knows where it will all go?"

"I've heard just about everyone thinks that Carpathia is a superhero of some sort. I had my suspicions about him, though."

"Well, as Bruce as taught, the Antichrist is a great deceiver, and many are drawn to him. A lot seemed to think that Carpathia's got all the answers to the world's problems."

"I can see that. So you say he's the Antichrist?"

"Yes. All the stuff that had happened, Eddie- the Rapture, Nicolae Carpathia's rise to world power, his appointment of ten ambassadors which we believe it's the ten kings, the signing of the Peace Treaty with Israel, and WWIII, have all been predicted in the Bible."

"So you're saying we're seeing all this unfold?"

"Yes, that's right. Jesus talked about it in His Olivet Discourse, where He spoke with His disciples on the Mount of Olives." Ashton got out his iphone, looked through a Bible app that he had downloaded, looked through Matthew 24:3-8:

As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.

"Wow", said Eddie.

"Yes", said Ashton, "And this is just the beginning. The question is: what are you going to do about it?"

"Well, I've been seeking God. I got me thinking if the guys in the department that I have disappeared were right."

"What do you believe about Jesus?"

"I believe He was God's Son, that He died and rose again."

"Well, perhaps you should pray and tell Him. All you have to do is talk to God like you're talking to me."

Ashton led Eddie through a simple prayer, and they both said amen. Ashton welcome Eddie to the family. He couldn't wait to tell the Trib Society that they have a new member.

****
At the King David Hotel, Josiah and Santiago decided to check out the Wailing Wall where the two witnesses were preaching. They got a close up of them.

"This is restricted", a guard said, "These two can breathe fire!"

"Thank you, sir", said Josiah in Hebrew.

They both got close. Santiago would have never dreamed of seeing Eli and Moishe in person. He had seen them on news and on the internet that showed them 24/7. But seeing them up close was a different experience.'

"So that's Eli and Moishe", said Santiago in a low voice.

"Yes, and it may be referring to Moses and Elijah", said Josiah.

"You mean the ones that talked with Jesus at the transfiguration."

"Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted", said Eli.

"but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles", said Moishe.

"they shall run and not be weary", both of them said, " they shall walk and not faint.

Santiago was intrigued that not only he could hear them in English, but also in Spanish. He remembered how each person could hear the two witnesses in their own language.

"I can hear them in English and Spanish", said Santiago.

"I can hear them in English, Hebrew, Russian, and Urdu", said Josiah, "Perhaps they're speaking to both of us as youths."

"You could be right."

They listened to them further.

"Let no other man anywhere call himself the ruler of this world!", said the witnesses, "Any man who makes such a claim is not the Christ but the Antichrist, and he shall surely die! Woe unto anyone who preaches another gospel! Jesus is the only true God, maker of heaven and earth!”

After listening, they got a glimpse of the Jewish temple, which looked spectacular.

"This where one day Carpathia will defile the temple", said Josiah with disgust, "He will perform what the Bible refers to as the 'Abomination of Desolation.'"

"That will take place in the middle of the Tribulation, if I remember correctly", said Santiago.

Josiah nodded. Both even wondered how Carpathia was going to do that. Though neither did want to think about it just yet.

*****
Chaya took Vicki to a cafe to meet with Mrs. Goodwin from the Global Community Services. They had a talk in her car, and she said she had to keep moving. Mrs. GOODWIN drove through town and parked on a residential street.

“This should be OK,” the woman said.

“What are you afraid of?” Vicki said.

“The Global Community,” Mrs. Goodwin said. “You have to find another place to stay tonight.”

“I have one,” Vicki said, “but I still don’t know why you’re helping me.”

Mrs. Goodwin had avoided eye contact with Vicki. Now she turned in her seat and pursed her lips.

“I work with troubled kids every day,” Mrs. Goodwin said. “There are thousands who have been left homeless because of the disappearances. I’m sure a lot of them have fallen through the cracks.”

“I wish I had,” Vicki said.

“I’m glad you didn’t,” Mrs. Goodwin said. “I talk with some pretty tough kids. You’re the first one who seemed to have more direction than the people trying to help her.”

Ma’am?” Vicki said.

“Your principal, Mrs. Jenness, and the other teacher, Mrs. Waltonen,” Mrs. Goodwin said. “They put up a front that they had it together. I could tell they were scared.”

“Do you know anything about Mrs. Waltonen?” Vicki said. “I saw her at Judd’s graduation, but I haven’t heard anything more.”

Mrs. Goodwin said that Mrs. Waltonen and Coach Handlesman were both at a reeducation facility.

Mrs. Goodwin said, “From the moment I heard you, I knew at some point I needed to talk with you.”

Vicki held her hands open as if to say, “I’m all ears.”

“I’ve tried to be a good person all my life,” Mrs. Goodwin said. “When I was a kid, they called me Goody Two-Shoes. I was at the top of my class academically. I volunteered for social organizations. I was popular.”

“You look like you could have been a cheerleader,” Vicki said.

Mrs. Goodwin smiled. “Varsity squad. When I went to college, I studied to teach disabled children. I worked with Social Services and saw how much help they needed, so I took this position.”

“How does that fit with me?” Vicki said.

“When you spoke of your faith,” Mrs. Goodwin said, “you didn’t talk about living up to rules and regulations. That’s what I’ve always thought about religion. You do your best and hope.”

“That’s what most people think,” Vicki said.

“I’ve cornered the market on helping people,” Mrs. Goodwin said. “I’ve gone overseas to feed the starving; I’ve worked at soup kitchens in the city. I’ve even taken people into my home to give them a place to stay. But I’ve never felt accepted by God. I’ve never really been sure like you. Over the last few months, I couldn’t get what you said out of my mind. I knew I had to talk with you. When the call came about your father, and I got wind of what the Global Community was saying, I had to come.”

“I’m glad you did,” Vicki said.

“So tell me,” Mrs. Goodwin said, “how can you be sure God accepts you?”

[So much is happening.]

Vicki led Mrs. Goodwin in a simple prayer. “God, I know I’m a sinner and I need your forgiveness. I believe Jesus died for me, and I ask you to come into my life now. Forgive me of my sins. I don’t trust in myself or my own goodness anymore but in your Son, Jesus. Amen.”

Mrs. Goodwin said, “Amen.”

Judd and Ryan arrived in Israel as well. He gasped when he saw the charred remains at Dr. Ben-Judahs' house. In the meantime, Judd met with Sam Goldberg, who showed him the DVD that had made of the murder. Sometime later, Judd showed it to Josiah and Santiago.

"They treated them like animals", said Josiah, not believing what he just saw.

"They did not deserved to die", said Santiago, "Though I remember Bruce saying many would be killed for the cause of Christ."

Sometime later, they showed the DVD to Robert and Everett.

"Judd said he will get the DVD to the Israeli police real soon", said Santiago, "Perhaps there could be a way to clear Tsion's name."

****
Judd secured the DVD at the front desk. He placed the key in his wallet. Near the elevator Ryan tapped Judd on the shoulder and nodded toward the front of the hotel. Judd saw Buck Williams.

“He’s traveling as light as we are,” Ryan said.

Buck was shocked to see Judd and Ryan.

“You’re taking a big chance,” Buck said.

Judd explained what they had learned about the Ben-Judah family.

“Have you heard anything from Dr. Ben-Judah?” Judd said.

“Nothing firsthand,” Buck said. “I just came from the airport and met one of the rabbi’s friends. He said Rabbi Ben-Judah called him once and said that I would know where to start looking.”

“Where’s that?” Ryan said.

“No way,” Buck said, shaking his head. “You two are out of this. The authorities are even trying to pin the murders of his family on the rabbi.”

“That’s loony!” Ryan said.

“I agree,” Buck said, “but the people out to get Tsion will stop at nothing. His driver was killed in a car bombing. That’s why I’m saying you two should get back to the States.”

“If that’s so,” Judd said, “they’re following you right now.”

“I’ve taken precautions,” Buck said. “I’m registered here under the name of Herb Katz. I’m going to my room to make a few calls and get some sleep. I’ll see you when I get back home.”

****
Josiah and Santiago noticed that Buck was traveling light has well. During their sight seeings, they ran into Phoebe, Josiah's older sister. She had been with the Israeli police.

"It's good to see you, little brother", said Phoebe, "Whose your friend?"

"This is Santiago Perez", said Josiah, "This is my sister, Phoebe."

"Nice to meet you", said Santiago, shaking hands with her, "Josiah told me you and your husband have become believers."

"Yes that's right. That was when Dr. Ben-Judah made the proclamation as Jesus as the Messiah on his broadcast. Well, did Josiah tell you that Silas and I lost two boys in the disappearances?"

"I'm sorry. How old were they?"

"Our oldest was in kindergarten. I was on police duty on the day it happened. Silas had taken them to school, and he called me, saying that their clothes were lying around. I was crying so much. After the broadcast, we both knew we wanted to see our boys again."

"I never quite understood why the unborn and infants and little children disappeared", said Josiah, "Though I remember Bruce saying something about the age of accountability."

"I actually remember reading about David's first son with Bathsheba who had died", said Santiago, "David even said that the child would not return to him but he would go to him one day. It might be indicating that the child was in Heaven."

Josiah told Phoebe of what he knew about the murder of Dr. Ben-Judah's family. She said that the police suspect him of the murder, but she knew he had to be innocent. She wished she could find a way to clear his name, but knew well that Carpathia was taking control of the world. There was no knowing how long before he will take control of the police force.

[Will they be able to find the murderer? We'll shall soon find out]

Chapter IX

***
Robert and Everett went sight seeing in Jerusalem as well. At the Wailing Wall, they met with Josiah and Santiago. While there, they noticed Judd and Ryan there, so was Buck. Buck hung back and waited for the sailors to leave. When he moved forward, Eli and Moishe raised their heads and looked directly at him. Buck walked to the fence.

He whispered something to the witnesses, and Eli said, “He who has ears to hear—”

Buck said, “I know that, but I—”

“You would dare interrupt the servants of the Most High God?” Eli said.

“Forgive me,” Buck said.

Moishe spoke. “You must first communicate with the one who loves you.”

Judd gave Ryan a puzzled look.

“What does he mean?” Ryan said.

Before Judd could answer, Buck’s cell phone rang. Judd heard Buck say “Chloe,” and understood. These witnesses knew so much.Buck got off the phone. Moishe and Eli huddled and seemed to be whispering. They approached the fence.

"Incredible how the witnesses know", said Santiago in a love voice.

Suddenly the two began shouting at the top of their lungs. Judd and Ryan stepped back, startled, then listened as Eli and Moishe traded off quoting verses.

“And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,” they shouted, “that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams.”

The men looked at Buck.

“What’s that all about?” Ryan whispered.

“Shh, listen,” Judd said.

The witnesses continued: “And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy. I will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth beneath: blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Buck picked up his bag and moved closer. Judd heard others in the crowd warn him. “Better not do that. You’ll regret it!” someone said.

Buck whispered something, and Eli spoke softly. Buck retreated to the crowd. “Did they hurt you, son?” a man said. Buck shook his head.

Moishe began to preach in a loud voice: “Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.’

“And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.’

“They immediately left their nets and followed Him.”

Ryan tugged on Judd’s arm. “It’s like they’re speaking in a biblical code,” he said. “They’re telling Buck where to look for the rabbi, but nobody knows it but Buck.”

Buck drifted from the crowd, lugged his bag to a short taxi line, and climbed into the back of a small cab. “Can a fella get a boat ride up the Jordan River into Lake Tiberius at this time of night?” Judd heard Buck ask the driver.

“Well, sir, to tell you the truth,” the cabbie said, “it’s a lot easier coming the other way. But, yes, there are motorized boats heading north. And some do run in the night.”

Judd and Ryan watched as the driver sped off. “Looks like we’re not gonna follow this time,” Judd said.

“Why not?”

“I’m almost out of cash,” Judd said. “Besides, I think Buck’s right. We need to get back home.”

Judd headed for a cab and noticed Ryan wasn’t budging. “It’d be different if Bruce were here,” Ryan said.

“How?” Judd said.

“He wouldn’t give up this easy,” Ryan said. “God brought us here for a reason. I don’t know what it is, but if those two guys can help Buck find somebody, they might be able to help us figure it out.”

Judd looked at the witnesses. His first reaction was to tell Ryan to cut the guilt trip. But he knew being in Israel was a dream come true for Ryan.

“All right,” Judd said. “Let’s see what they say.”

Ryan was glad Judd had changed his mind. The crowd was much smaller as they approached. The witnesses were silent. Ryan boldly made his way to the front, and Judd followed.

****
"Incredible what we just saw", said Everett.

"Perhaps Josiah and I should go to the police station", said Santiago.

"Oh, could you get a hold of the others back in the States?", asked Robert.

"I'll do that after we get there", said Josiah.

Josiah and Santiago had gone to the Israeli police station. When they arrived, they knew that Judd got nowhere being polite. He was an American in a foreign country. He stood in one line, then was told to wait in another. Finally he grabbed the arm of an officer going by. The man looked at him sternly.

“I have information about the murders of the rabbi’s family,” Judd said.

The man immediately took Judd into a corner office. Judd waited until a police captain arrived.

“Why did you come to our country?” the man said.

“Friends,” Judd said. “The Ben-Judah family. I wanted to be sure the reports were right.”

“Their bodies are in the morgue now,” the man said. “Would you like to see them?”

“No,” Judd said. “I know they’re dead. But I saw something. The face of one of the murderers.”

“And how could you have seen that?”

“First, I need to know that you’re serious about finding the murderers,” Judd said.

The man stood and picked up a phone. “We are serious,” he said. He spoke softly into the phone, then put it down. “I am so serious about this matter that I want you to talk to the people heading up the investigation.”

Chapter X

***
Judd was placed in a holding cell. He knew the Global Community officials wanted to scare him. When they finally brought Judd upstairs, he gave them his name and where he was from.

“Where is your passport?” the GC officer said.

“It’s probably back at the hotel,” Judd said.

“And where is the item you had locked in the hotel safe?”

“What item?” Judd said.

The man tilted his head and looked over his glasses. “Mr. Thompson, we can make this as easy or as difficult as you wish.”

“I don’t know where it is,” Judd said. “That’s the truth.”

“Who is in possession of it?”

“A friend.”

“Would this be your young friend?” The GC official described Ryan.

“I don’t understand,” Judd said. “I come here to tell you about a murder you’re investigating, and now I’m the bad guy. What’s up with that?”

The man nodded to the guard, and Judd was taken back to his cell. Another guard came with some dinner a few hours later. Judd wondered about Ryan. Maybe Buck had been right. Maybe he had endangered both of them needlessly. After midnight the guards brought a bearded man into the next cell and threw him on the cot. The man was bleeding and had dark bruises on his face.' The next morning Judd was again interrogated.

“I suppose you’ve had time to think about your situation,” the man said.

“I’m an American citizen,” Judd said. “I came here to find out about my friends. I wanted to give information to the authorities, but I don’t think I can trust you.”

“You are a citizen of the Global Community,” the man corrected. “You only have the rights granted by such. We know who killed the woman and the children. We do not need your help to solve this crime. As a matter of fact, there is the man now.”

The officer pointed a remote-control device to a television in the corner. A picture of Rabbi Tsion Ben-Judah flashed on the screen. The Global Community Network News reported that a Michael Shorosh had been arrested in connection with the harboring of a fugitive from justice. “Global Community spokesmen say that Ben-Judah, formerly a respected scholar and clergyman, apparently became a radical fundamentalist. They point to this sermon he delivered just a week ago as evidence that he overreacted to a New Testament passage and was later seen by several neighbors slaughtering his own family.”

Judd watched in horror as the news ran a tape of Tsion speaking at a huge rally in a filled stadium in Larnaca, on the island of Cyprus. “You’ll note,” the newsman said, as the tape was stopped, “the man on the platform behind Dr. Ben-Judah has been identified as Michael Shorosh. In a raid on his Jericho home shortly after midnight, peacekeeping forces found personal photos of Ben-Judah’s family and identification papers from both Ben-Judah and an American journalist, Cameron Williams. Williams’s connection to the case has not been determined.”

Judd recognized the man named Michael as the person in the cell next to him. In the photo on television he had no cuts or bruises. The tape showed Dr. Ben-Judah reading from Matthew. The verses, of course, had been taken out of context. “Whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.”

The news reporter said solemnly, “This was recorded just a few days before the rabbi murdered his own wife and children in broad daylight.”

***
Josiah and Santiago saw the same news, and were disturbed by it. Josiah got out his iphone, and made a facetime call with Molly.

"Josiah, how are things in Israel?", asked Molly.

"Santiago and I are at the Israeli police station, Molly", said Josiah, "I can't get into much detail on what is happening. Though they think it's the rabbi, Dr. Ben-Judah who murdered his own family. I know well he's innocent."

"Now how do you say the rabbi’s first name?"

"Zion... like Mount Zion. It comes up a lot in the Bible."

"Gotcha!"

"So how are things back in the States?"

"Aneurin and I just made up an invitation to Bruce's funeral service on The Hidden Truth webpage. We figured that since we couldn't get physical copies passed the GC monitors at the schools..."

"Sounds good. Robert, Everett, Santiago, and I should be back in time for the service."

"Oh, Josiah, could you bring back some fruit? They said we're not going to be able to get anything for weeks because of the war."

"So the prices are going up! The black horseman of the apocalypse! I also saw a notification of some wide spread disease going on! I believe it's the pale horse!"

"So both are happening at the same time?"

"I don't know! Though it seems like it! A quarter of the earth population will die!"

"Well, I can't wait to see you back here."

"You too. I miss you already!"

They said goodbye, and hanged up. Meanwhile, a GC official approached Josiah and Santiago.

"Well, well", said the GC official, "What brings you two here?"

"We were just doing some investigation", said Josiah, "We're passing through Israel."

"I see. I bet you can't wait to get back to your girlfriend." What? How did he know? Josiah wondered if the GC official had been listening in to him face timing Molly. "I saw that you were face timing a girl...."

"I wouldn't exactly say she's my girlfriend", said Josiah.

"The way you've talked with her? Oh, I could sense something..."

"Ah, Josiah, would it be the best time to leave here?", asked Santiago in a low voice.

"Good idea. How about we go pick up some fruit while we're out. I've told Molly would bring back some to the States."

[So much happening, and things are about to get intense!]

Chapter XI

***
When Judd wouldn’t talk, he was taken to his cell. The man named Michael was gone, but was roughly returned a few minutes later. Judd pulled close to the bars and whispered. The man looked at Judd, then lay back again. Michael looked awful.

One eye was swollen shut. “I’m a friend of Buck Williams,” Judd said.

Michael’s voice was low and gravelly. “The Global Community can do better than this. I told you already, I do not know where the rabbi is.”

“I’m not one of them,” Judd said.

He tried to explain who he was and why he was in Israel, but Michael wouldn’t listen. “I was there when the witnesses talked with Buck,” Judd said in desperation.

Michael sat up. “What did the witnesses say?”
“They quoted verses about going into Egypt,” Judd said. “Buck got in a cab and was looking for someone who had a boat who could take him up the Jordan River.”

Michael slid close to the bars and looked at Judd with his good eye.

***
Josiah and Santiago went to a nearby market to purchase some fruit to take back to the States. While there, they met up with Robert and Everett.

”So if anything”, said Robert, “Perhaps we should meet at the plane.”

”Good idea”, said Everett, “Robert and I will take the fruits to the plane. Josiah and Santiago should get back to the police station.”

”And find more about the murder”, said Josiah.

***
It was back to school back in the States. Aneurin and Molly were hoping that The Hidden Truth webpage convinced them to attend Bruce’s funeral.

“When are we going to print physical copies again?”, asked Molly.

“We might be able to soon”, said Aneurin, “There’s still prices on our heads, though.”

They soon got to classes. Though they had been about the Enigma One World Faith. Well, who knew what the rest of the school year would be like.”

***
Josiah and Santiago arrived at the police station. While there, the guard came for Judd, led him upstairs to another office, and told Judd to wait. The same interrogator stepped in the room and left the door ajar. He told Judd to go through his story again, and Judd reluctantly did. He looked familiar, but Judd couldn’t place him.

“We understand you paid a visit to a neighbor of the Ben-Judah family,” the officer said, “A concerned father called and said his son had talked with an American who knew the rabbi’s children. Would that have been you?”

“I went to the Ben-Judah house to see for myself,” Judd said. “There was a kid next door in a garden.”

“You took something with you when you left. What was it?”

The video! Judd thought. That’s the man in the mask!

”That’s the officer who did it”, said Santiago to Josiah in a low voice.

“What did you take with you?” the officer said sternly, looking directly at Judd. His eyes were dark and piercing.

There was a knock at the door. An officer handed the interrogator a note. Judd talked with the officer, knowing now he was the murderer. JUDD waited nervously while the men finished the paperwork for his release. As far as Judd could tell, the man who had killed the Ben-Judah family wasn’t an official Global Community officer, but he was working closely with them.

Judd questioned the man again before they led him to the car. “When this is over I’m free, right?” he said.

“You have my word,” the man said.

Judd sat alone in the backseat of the car. Judd glanced behind them as they pulled out. A van followed that looked like the same one used in the Ben-Judah murders.

So the whole crew is here, Judd thought.

[Sounds like the murderer has been revealed]

Chapter XII

Aneurin looked at The Hidden Truth webpage. He wondered when they would be able to make a physical copy again. Then the question was, how would they be able to distribute them. The school libraries would be one idea.

"What would the next article be about?", asked Molly.

"Maybe the economic collapse or the widespread disease", said Aneurin, "But then I don't know."

***
Josiah and Santiago arrived at the Wailing, where Eli and Moishe. They saw the DVD were there. They expected Judd to take the GC officer there to pick up the video.

“I wonder Judd has in mind”, said Santiago.

“I hope Buck gets Tsion to safety”, said Josiah.

Judd didn’t tell them they were going to the Wailing Wall. Instead, he gave them directions as they came to each intersection. Finally, Judd told them to stop.

”What is this?” the man said.

“You wanted the DVD, right?” Judd said. “This is where it is.”

The driver pulled his gun. “This is a trick,” he said. “He has no tape.”

Judd tried to remain calm. He didn’t know exactly where Ryan had put the tape, but he had an idea. He opened the door and slowly got out. The driver jumped out and held his gun on Judd.

“Put that away,” the other man said.

“I’ve kept my end of the bargain,” Judd said.

“You haven’t given us anything,” the man said.

Judd pointed toward the witnesses. “The tape’s over there. I told you it was in a safe place.”

The van pulled up, and several men exited. They didn’t have black hoods, but Judd placed each of them as the masked gunmen. The driver started forward, but the leader stopped him.

“If he wants to be released,” the man said, “he’ll have to bring the tape to us himself. Everyone wait here.”

Judd scanned the cabs and noticed one at the end with no driver. Then Ryan popped his head up and winked. Judd made his way to the front of the small crowd, then inched farther.

“Don’t let their stillness fool you,” someone said. “They’ll kill you if you get too close.”

Judd spied the DVD lying near the fence. Moishe and Eli appeared to be sleeping, their leathery skin rising and falling with each breath. Judd got close enough to bend down and grab the tape when he heard a voice.

“God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who push the truth away from themselves,” Eli said. “Stand back.”

Judd stood and left the DVD. Josiah and Santiago were close by, though were at a distance. The small crowd had retreated when they heard Eli’s voice.

“What are you doing?” the leader called behind Judd. “Bring it here.”

“I can’t,” Judd said, moving away from the fence. “If you want it, you’ll have to get it yourself.”

Judd stepped a safe distance from the fence.

The leader of the group was seething. ”You will regret this,” the man said.

“What do you mean?” Judd said. “You told me—”

“You didn’t actually think I would let you out of the country, did you?” the man said. “You and your little friend in the cab will be dealt with most severely.”

”It sounds like God is going to use those two to do something about that man”, said Josiah

The man strode toward the fence and picked up the DVD. He turned to leave but stopped when Moishe’s voice thundered behind him.

“We proclaim the power of God Almighty,” Moishe said, “whose majesty is over Israel, whose power is in the skies.”

“Woe to you, evildoers,” Eli said. “Woe to those who shed the blood of the innocent.”

the man’s face turn white with terror. He clutched the DVD to his chest and turned.

“The blood of the righteous cries out,” Moishe thundered.

The man stiffened. “What do you want with me?” he cried. “I have done nothing to you!”

Eli and Moishe looked with piercing eyes at the man. The man gasped at their faces and turned to run.

“Behold, the Lord says vengeance is mine,” Eli and Moishe said in one loud voice. “I will repay, says the Lord.”

“Santiago, look out!”, Josiah said as they ducked away.

With that, the two witnesses opened their mouths, and fire gushed forth, engulfing the man. Josiah and Santiago headed towards the plane to meet Robert and Everett. They started to fly back to the States.

"Where's the DVD?", asked Everett.

"It melted in the fire", said Santiago.

"The GC officer went to pick up the DVD at the Wailing Wall", said Josiah, "But just as he did, Eli and Moishe looked on at him with piercing eyes. Then they opened their mouths, and breathed fire on him!"

"We had to duck away as it was happening."

Robert and Everett knew at once that God used the two witnesses to deal with the murderer.

Chapter XIII

***
It was as if Tsion Ben-Judah was in some international witness protection program. Vicki was at Loretta’s home when he was smuggled in under the cover of night. Amanda and Chloe greeted him warmly and compassionately. Vicki had talked with Judd briefly from their plane and knew the truth about his family. She stayed in the background and watched. Loretta had a light snack waiting for all of them.

“I’m old and not too up on things,” she said, “but I’m quickly getting the picture here. The less I know about your friend, the better, am I right?”

Before anyone could answer, Tsion said, “I am deeply grateful for your hospitality.”

Loretta soon trundled off to bed, expressing her delight in offering her home in service to the Lord. Buck and Tsion had been injured. Chloe hobbled with them into the living room, followed by a chuckling Amanda.

“I wish Rayford were here,” she said. “I feel like the only one who can walk without a limp. I’m going to have to do every chore that requires two good legs around here.”

Chloe leaned forward and reached for Tsion’s hand with both of hers. “Dr. Ben-Judah, we have heard so much about you. We feel blessed of God to have you with us. We can’t imagine your pain.”

The rabbi took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, his lips quivering. “I cannot tell you how deeply grateful I am that God has brought me here. I confess my heart is broken. I cannot deny God’s presence, yet there are times I wonder how I will go on. I must pray for relief from bitterness and hatred. Most of all, I feel terrible guilt that I brought this upon my wife and children. I don’t know what else I could have done, short of trying to make them more secure. I could not have avoided serving God in the way he has called me.”

Amanda and Buck each put a hand on Tsion’s shoulders. They all wept and prayed. They talked well into the night, Buck explaining that Tsion would be the object of an international manhunt, which would no doubt be approved by Nicolae Carpathia himself.

****
Robert, Josiah, Everett, and Santiago made it back to the States and made their way to Mount Prospect. They unload the box of fruit that they have brought back from Israel, and brought it in at the house and donated some to New Hope Village Church.

"I need to call Loretta from New Hope", said Josiah. Josiah got out his phone and dialed Loretta, who had been Bruce's secretary.

"Josiah, you've made it", said Loretta.

"Loretta", said Josiah, "You must have heard that the Rabbi is... well.."

"Oh, haven't you heard? Buck smuggled Tsion out of Israel and brought him here."

"So the Rabbi is okay..."

"Yes, he is."

"Oh, but he'll be living as a fugitive. It's kind of expected for believers during this time."

"Well, thank you for calling. You'll be there at Bruce's funeral, right?"

"I wouldn't miss it."

Then they hanged up. Then the rest gathered around.

"So funeral service is coming up", said Molly.

"Perhaps we shouldn't sit together in case someone recognizes us", said Robert, "If it the invite got out on the Hidden Truth website or if the young Trib Force put it in the Underground newspaper, who knows how many would show up?"

"And there are probably quite a few who aren't believers", said Everett, "Good idea. Well, you and Lucille could sit together."

"I've been asked to give an eulogy", said Josiah, "Rayford Steele is going to officiate."

They nodded. They said a word of prayer, thanking God for letting Buck to get Tsion to safety, and asked God to help protect them in the days ahead.

Chapter XIV

The day of the funeral service have arrived. Robert and Lucille arrived, with Lucille's arm linked to Robert's. Then they were followed by Ashton, Josiah, Everett, Aneurin, Santiago and Molly. Then they saw quite a few have arrived as well: Bruce's secretary Loretta, Buck and Chloe, and even Tsion. Then there was Judd, Vicki, Lionel, and Ryan.

"Should we sit together?", asked Aneurin, "I mean, what if someone recognizes us?"

"Robert and I could sit together", said Lucille, "Though the rest of you should sit separately just to be safe."

"I have to be up front anyways", said Josiah, "I'm supposed to give an eulogy and play piano."

"Perhaps I could join you", said Molly, "How about we sing a special or two... as in tribute."

"Good idea."

Robert and Lucille went to take their seat, while Josiah went to the front, and the rest spread out. Everett noticed that the funeral service was packed. He wondered if there any non-believers there. Could there be someone that is working for Carpathia? He knew had to be careful. Next thing, Josiah went to the piano, and started playing "How Great Thou Art", "Amazing Grace", "Be Still My Soul."

Rayford Steele walked through a door at the side of the platform. Another elder stepped to the pulpit and asked everyone to stand. He led them in singing two hymns.

When the songs had concluded, the elder said, “That is the extent of our preliminary service. There will be no offering today. There will be no announcements today. All meetings will resume next Sunday, as scheduled. This memorial service is in memory of our dear departed pastor, Bruce Barnes.”

He proceeded to tell when and where Bruce was born and when and where he died. “He was preceded by his wife, a daughter, and two sons, who were raptured with the church. Our speaker this morning is Elder Rayford Steele, a member of this congregation since just after the Rapture. He was a friend and confidant of Bruce. He will deliver the eulogy and a brief message. You may come back at 4:00 p.m. for a viewing if you wish.”

Rayford felt as if he were floating in another dimension. He had heard his name and knew well what they were about that morning. Was this a mental defense mechanism? Was God allowing him to set aside his grief and his emotions so he could speak clearly? That was all he could imagine. Were his emotions to overcome him, there would be no way he could speak.

He thanked the other elder and opened his notes. “Members and friends of New Hope Village Church,” he began, “and relatives and friends of Bruce Barnes, I greet you today in the matchless name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. If there is one thing I have learned out there in the world, it is that a speaker should never apologize for himself. Allow me to break that rule first and get it out of the way, because I know that despite how close Bruce and I were, this is not about me. In fact, Bruce would tell you, it’s not about him either. It’s about Jesus. I need to tell you that I’m up here this morning not as an elder, not as a parishioner, and certainly not as a preacher. Speaking is not my gift. No one has even suggested that I might replace Bruce here. I am here because I loved him and because in many ways—primarily because he left a treasure trove of notes behind—I am able in a small way to speak for him. I want to tell you how I first met Bruce, because I know that many of you met him in much the same way. We were at the point of the greatest need in our lives, and Bruce had beat us to it by only a few hours.”

Rayford went on to say how he met Bruce shortly after the Rapture, and that he provided them a DVD of a video that Pastor Billings made prior to the Rapture, explaining what happened.

“If you had asked people five minutes before the Rapture what Christians taught about God and heaven,” Rayford said, “nine in ten would have said to live a good life, do the best you can, be kind, and hope for the best. It sounded good, but it was wrong! The Bible says our good deeds are worthless. We have all sinned. All of us are worthy of the punishment of death.”

Next there were eulogies from Loretta, Tsion, Buck. Then Ashton gave an eulogy, reflecting on how Bruce was a teacher, reaching out to people even in the midst of chaos. Then it was Robert and Lucille who each did. They reflected on without Bruce's guidance and counsel, they would not have been married. They were both grateful that he was there to officiate their small wedding ceremony. Then Everett went up to give his eulogy, and he reflected on how much he and Bruce had a lot in common: attended church, knew the word, but never really acted on it before the Rapture. Then Aneurin gave his eulogy, reflecting on looking up to Bruce for guidance. Then Santiago gave his eulogy, reflecting on before the Rapture, he attended youth groups and churches, but had always felt something was missing. He even said that Bruce had been there to give him what he was looking for. Then Molly went up to give hers, and she reflected on how as someone who attempted suicide with about a dozen or so sleeping pills shortly after the Rapture, and how Josiah nursed her during her stay in the hospital, Bruce was there to listen to when needing a talk to. Then Josiah gave his eulogy.

"I am Josiah Eliraz", said Josiah, "Most of you know me as a registered nurse, but I've also served as an associate pastor under Bruce here at New Hope Village Church. He was more than a friend, he was also a mentor. He taught so much what means to be ready for what's coming and what it means to be a believer. How could he be taken from us so soon? It's hard to grasp. In Job 19:25-27, I think of Bruce when I reflect on this:

For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me!

Did you hear that? Bruce may have been taken, but now He sees God, who is the Redeemer that lives. It is an overwhelming thought! Now I ask if Molly may join me for a special or two that we have."

Molly got up from her seat and went up to the pulpit. She stood next to Josiah at the piano, and they sang "Testify to Love" and "I Can Only Imagine."

“I won’t keep you much longer. But I’m sure you all agree that this is life-and-death stuff. From Bruce’s notes and teaching we learn that Revelation 6:9-11 points out that the fifth of the seven Seal Judgments concerns tribulation martyrs. The Scripture says, ‘I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held. And they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Then a white robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed.’ There many of those who have died in this world war, and are yet to die until a quarter of the world’s population is gone, are considered tribulation martyrs. I put Bruce in this category. While he may not have died specifically for preaching the gospel or while preaching the gospel, clearly it was his life’s work and it resulted in his death. I envision Bruce under the altar with the souls of those slain for the word of God and for the testimony they held. He will be given a white robe and told to rest a while longer until even more martyrs are added to the total. I must ask you today, are you prepared? Are you willing? Would you give your life for the sake of the gospel?”

Josiah began to think of Mrs. Ben-Judah and her two children, Nina and Dan who were murdered. He began to think that they are also in that category of the martyrs under the altar crying out for vengeance. Then Rayford went on to explain what the sixth seal judgment is: a world wide earthquake: the Wrath of the Lamb.

“Bruce taught us that the first four Seal Judgments were represented by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse", Rayford said, "I submit to you that those horsemen are at full gallop. The fifth seal, the tribulation martyrs who had been slain for the Word of God and for the testimony which they held, and whose souls are under the altar, has begun. Bruce’s commentary indicates that more and more martyrs will be added now. Antichrist will come against tribulation saints and the 144,000 witnesses springing up all over the world from the tribes of Israel. Hear me, from a very practical standpoint. If Bruce is right—and he has been so far—we are close to the end of the first twenty-one months. I believe in God. I believe in Christ. I believe the Bible is the Word of God. I believe our dear departed brother ‘rightly divided the word of truth,’ and thus I am preparing to endure what this passage calls ‘the wrath of the Lamb.’ An earthquake is coming, and it is not symbolic. This passage indicates that everyone, great or small, would rather be crushed to death than to face the one who sits on the throne.”

The funeral service was wrapping up. There were many who told Josiah that they thought he gave a beautiful eulogy and that he and Molly sang beautiful specials. Soon after, Molly met up with Aneurin and Santiago out in the foyer. They knew that they had school the next day. To their surprise, Principal Jenness from Nicolae High and Principal Winkler from Global Community Middle School were both thee.

"The schools will continue on as it is", said Principal Jenness, "Miss Burton, those were two beautiful specials you and that Jewish nurse did."

"Ah, thank you", said Molly.

"Miss Burton, we may had our differences", said Principal Winkler.

"I think we'll let it rest for now", said Santiago, "Principal Jenness... see you in school tomorrow."

Meanwhile, Josiah met with Tsion Ben-Judah. Tsion even said that he may feel God is leading him to become a mentor for the Trib Force, perhaps as a cyber pastor to reach out world wide.

"Perhaps, Josiah", said Tsion, "You could continue on as my associate pastor. I'm sure Bruce would've want you to continue."

"I'm sure he would", said Josiah, "Thank you."

Then they headed home. Though Aneurin, Santiago, and Molly began to wonder about school. It seemed that it was never the same and began to wonder if it ever will be.

Chapter XV

****
They arrived at Josiah's house after the funeral service.

"Rayford said that from Bruce's sermon notes", said Josiah, "There is to be world wide earthquake. Then the seventh seal judgment: there will be in silence in heaven for about half an hour."

"Then what?", asked Molly.

"It will usher in the seven trumpets."

"What about the 144,000 witnesses?", asked Santiago

"We should expect them to rise at any moment", said Josiah.

"Josiah, you're Jewish", said Molly, "Could you possibly be one of the 144,000?"

"Well, if that where God leads me. Even if it's not, I would still like to take the message out wherever I can. God could even lead me to take intentional trips, like Bruce did."

"I'd like to help with that", said Aneurin.

Josiah put a hand on Aneurin's shoulder.

***
Things were brewing in New Babylon as well. Nicolae Carpathia had big plans as well. Soon, in every ten region, there would be a group of young people in training, forming a secret police.

"We'll call them morale monitors", said Carpathia, "GCMM. That's it."

****
It was a school day the next day at Nicolae High. Aneurin went to his senior class, while Santiago, Milo, Issac, Chelsea, and Molly, went to their sophomore class. They would all meet up at lunch. Meanwhile, Lionel retrieved some clothes from Judd’s house and headed for school. Vicki said she would be praying for him and stood across the hall from the principal’s office while Lionel went in.

The school secretary was just getting in and asked him to wait. Finally, she buzzed Mrs. Jenness.

The principal opened the door and ushered Lionel in. Inside, a burly, black man about the size of Lionel’s father stood and embraced him.

“I don’t mean to scare you,” the man said. “I’ve just heard so much about you, I feel like I know you.”

“Who are you?” Lionel said.

“This is Mr. Sebring,” Mrs. Jenness said. “He called me last Friday about meeting you.”

“Nathan Sebring,” the man said, “but my friends call me Nate. Your mother called me that when we were kids.”

“My mother?” Lionel said.

“Lucinda was one of my dearest friends,” Nathan said. “I called her Cindy. I knew your father as well. Fine man.”

Mrs. Jenness asked them to sit. “We had trouble locating you with your current address, Lionel,” she said. “The house was empty. Boarded up, actually.”

Lionel didn’t speak. He didn’t want to talk about where he was staying until he was asked.

“I knew your mama when we were little kids,” Nathan said. “Some of your family’s still down South, and when I asked about you, they said—”

“I didn’t think I had any family left down South,” Lionel said. “Didn’t they get taken in the disappearances?”

“Sure, some of ’em did,” Nathan said, “but a couple were left. I think they heard through your Uncle André that you were still alive. I’m sorry to hear about his passin’.”

The two stared at Lionel as if he was supposed to know what to say. Lionel stood. “Well, it was really nice meeting you,” he said. “I’d better get to class.”

“Now hold on a minute,” Nathan said, taking Lionel’s arm. Lionel looked at the man’s hand, and he took it away. “Your family asked me to come for you,” Nathan continued. “They gave me papers.”

“They’re in order,” Mrs. Jenness said.

“I told them I’d come and get you. They made me promise not to come back unless I brought you back.”

Lionel forced a smile. “That’s very kind of you,” he said, “but I don’t know the family back there anymore. I wouldn’t feel comfortable.”

Nathan looked at Mrs. Jenness. “He’ll get used to it in time,” Nathan said. “He’ll be like a bird let out of a cage down there.”

“Lionel,” Mrs. Jenness said, “if it’s true that you have no family here and there are relatives who want you to live with them, I don’t see that you have any real choice in the matter.”

“Now you’ve got that right, ma’am,” Nathan said. “The boy just doesn’t understand how much love those people have for him.” Nathan looked at Lionel. “If you knew how much they cared, you wouldn’t put up a fuss.”

“I don’t want to go,” Lionel said. “I’m happy where I am.”

Nathan cocked his head. “Now if that don’t beat all,” he said. “I’m sorry. I guess I just don’t understand the culture up here. A man rides hundreds of miles on a train to find somebody he’s never met, and when he finds him … mm mm mm.”

“You could have phoned,” Lionel said.

“I did phone the only place that has contact with you,” Nathan said. “And Mrs. Jenness, who has been a wonderful help, offered her complete assistance.”

“Lionel,” Mrs. Jenness said, “you have a right not to go, but Mr. Sebring and the family also have the right to petition the Global Community Social Services.”

“And I’ll do it, too,” Nathan said. “Out of respect for your relations down South, of course.”

“Can he really do that?” Lionel said.

“I can and I will,” Nathan said.

Lionel felt alone. Bruce was dead. Judd had disappeared. He was glad Vicki was outside waiting for him.

“Can you give me some time to think it over?” Lionel said.

“You can have the whole day,” Nathan said. “I scheduled train tickets leaving tomorrow for the two of us. Where can I come talk to you?”

“Why don’t you leave me your hotel number?” Lionel said. “I’ll call you this evening.”

During gym class, Molly excelled despite her small stature—her determination giving wings to her spirit as she played volleyball effortlessly among towering peers who marveled at her agility and skill learned from years spent twirling on ice before life took its tragic turn after Rapture. But even amidst triumphs came moments when sorrow pierced through—the thought of Bruce haunted her every leap and dive; tears threatened to spill over as she recalled him smiling proudly from bleachers once filled with laughter now silenced by loss.

“Miss Burton!” called out her gym teacher interrupting memories swirling painfully within her mind.

“Yes?” she replied breathlessly amidst heartache brewing beneath surface smiles.

“You know you’ve played exceptionally well today,” he remarked genuinely.

“It’s been good therapy,” she murmured softly unaware how deeply those words resonated within hearts gathering around her fragile frame—it was not only sport but also hope reaching for brighter tomorrows even when darkness threatened encroachment daily upon lives intertwined by fate itself.

"It's okay."

There was a sight in Heaven. Under the altar, there stood the martyrs, including Bruce Barnes, Judith Stein, Mrs. Ben-Judah and her two children Nina and Dan. There were many others as well.

“O Sovereign Lord, holy and true", they cried out, "how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"

Then they were given white robes and were told to wait awhile, until many more of their brothers and sisters in the faith were killed just as they were, and the numbers were complete.

[So we got a glimpse of Heaven with the martyrs under the altar]

Chapter XVI

*****
After gym, Molly met up with Aneurin and Santiago, their eyes red-rimmed and their spirits low. They shared a silent lunch, each lost in their thoughts about the tumultuous events of the past week.

“I’ve heard Lionel may be leaving us soon," Chelsea whispered to Molly and Santiago during their shared lunch. "He’s got family down south who want him to go live with them."

Santiago frowned, his grip tightening on his sandwich. "What's going on?"

“Some guy named Nate Sebring showed up at school today," Lionel told Aneurin and Santiago after lunch, his voice heavy with doubt. "Says he's a family friend from down South, that my relatives sent him for me. They want me to move in with them."

Aneurin and Santiago exchanged worried glances. They knew Lionel had no family left in the South, at least none that he had talked about. The idea of him being sent away to live with strangers was unsettling.

“Are you sure you want to do this?”, Molly asked, her eyes searching Lionel’s for any sign of hesitation.

Lionel shrugged, his expression a mask of resignation. “What choice do I have? If I don’t go, they might come looking for me. And with everything that’s been happening, I don’t want to put anyone here at risk.”

“We understand”, Isaac said, placing a comforting hand on Lionel’s shoulder.

Robert and Lucille sat in their living room that evening, discussing the day's events with one another. They were both tired from the emotional funeral and the stress of the last week, but they knew they couldn't let their guard down. The GC was ever watchful, and any misstep could lead to dire consequences for all of them.

“Robert, have ever thought of us having children?”, Lucille asked, her voice soft, as they sat in their dimly lit living room.

Robert looked at her, surprised by the sudden change in topic. “What brought this up, Luce?”, he replied, taking a sip of water.

“Just thinking about the future, I guess. With everything going on, it seems so uncertain, but I know we’re meant to live our lives as normally as possible. And having a child, it’s a beautiful way to bring some light into all this darkness, isn’t it?”, she said with a sad smile.

Robert nodded, stroking her hair gently. “It’s a tough world to bring a child into, but if it’s what you want, we’ll talk to the others, see if it’s the right time. Maybe it’s part of God’s plan for us.”

The school day ended and Aneurin, who had just got his driver’s license, drove him, Santiago and Molly back to the estate. The conversation remained sparse as the weight of the day’s revelations bore down on them.

“Good thing I’ve quit drinking. Otherwise, I’d be arrested for drunk driving”, Aneurin said, trying to lighten the mood as they pulled into the Eliraz Estate.

Molly couldn’t help but laugh a little, a brief moment of relief in the tension. They piled out of the car and walked into the house, greeted by the comforting smells of dinner cooking.

“How was school today?” Everett asked, looking up from the book he was reading.

“It was all about the One World Faith again," Santiago said with a roll of his eyes, tossing his backpack onto the floor. "Makes me sick!”

Josiah, who had been cooking dinner, looked up from the stove. "Sounds like it's going to get worse before it gets better," he said, his voice carrying a mix of weariness and resolve.

"We can't let it get to us," Aneurin said, trying to sound braver than he felt. "We've got to stay strong for Bruce's sake. And for everyone else who's counting on us."

For dinner, they gathered around the table, the mood subdued despite the warmth and light of the room. The comfort foods of mac and cheese, green beans, and garlic bread seemed to offer a small respite from the harsh realities of their world. They talked about the school day in hushed tones, sharing snippets of their experiences without delving into the deeper issues weighing on their hearts.

Ashton arrived at the Eliraz Estate later that evening, his eyes scanning the perimeter for any signs of trouble. The quietness of the neighborhood was a stark contrast to the turmoil he knew was brewing beneath the surface.

“I just heard about Carpathia’s move for GCMMs,” Ashton said, his face grim as he sat at the dinner table. “They’re training these kids to be his eyes and ears. It’s going to make our work more complicated.”

“What’s GCMM?”, Molly inquired, her voice tentative.

“Global Community Morale Monitors, Molly,” Ashton replied. “A new youth division of the Global Community Peacekeepers. Basically, kids spying on their classmates, teachers, and anyone else who might not be fully aligned with Carpathia’s regime. It’s a way for him to maintain control and weed out any dissent before it can take root.”

“But why would they need kids for that?”, Santiago asked, frowning as he helped himself to seconds.

“Think about it,” Ashton said, his eyes intense. “Kids can get into places adults can’t. They can listen in on conversations, report on behavior, even plant false evidence. It’s a clever move on Carpathia’s part—insidious, really. We have to be more vigilant than ever before.”

“And kids don’t have a choice?”, Aneurin spoke up, pushing his food around his plate.

“Some will, some will be drafted,” Ashton said, his jaw tight. “It’s almost like joining the military, but the battle they’re fighting is against freedom of thought. And if they find out about our little gatherings, or our beliefs...” He trailed off, not needing to elaborate on the potential dangers.

Josiah nodded solemnly, serving the last of the garlic bread. "We need to be prepared for anything," he said. "We can't let fear dictate our actions, but we must be wise."

Lionel put his suitcase down in the foyer of Bruce’s house. It was late. No one seemed to want to look at him. Lionel shook hands with some and hugged others. Vicki was in tears.

“Do you know where Ryan is?” Lionel said.

“Bruce’s room,” Vicki managed.

Lionel found Ryan staring out Bruce’s window.

“I’m sorry for snapping at you,” Lionel said.

“Yeah, it’s OK,” Ryan said flatly. “I didn’t mean what I said either.”

“I don’t hold it against you,” Lionel said. “We’re all pretty raw right now.”

“So you’re giving up?” Ryan said.

Lionel frowned. He didn’t want to get into it with Ryan again. If things had to end, he wanted them to end well.

“I don’t think you’re rid of me yet,” Lionel said. “A couple of years and I’ll be on my own.”

“A couple of years is a long time when there’s only five left altogether,” Ryan said.

“I don’t know why this has happened,” Lionel said. “I keep thinking maybe there’s somebody down South who needs to hear the truth. My going might be the only way they’ll hear it.”

Ryan turned. “I’m sorry … about everything,” he said.

“We had some good fights,” Lionel said.

Ryan smiled. Lionel saw a van pull into the driveway. Nathan Sebring got out. Lionel shook hands with Ryan.

“Call me,” Ryan said.

“You bet,” Lionel said.

As Lionel grabbed his suitcase, Darrion came out of her room, crying. “They’ve arrested my mother,” she said. The others came to comfort her.

As he got in the car, Lionel looked back at the house. The kids were standing outside. He had been through so much with these friends. He allowed a thought to cross his mind: This might be the last time I see any of them in this life.

[Imagine that. Kids (teens) being drafted to some secret police force. It shows that Carpathia’s gaining more control]
