Yes I used to hear growing up, "Adversity doesn't build character. Character is who you are. Adversity REVEALS character, and it's always up to us to decide what kind of character we want to have."

With that said, I don't understand the point of the thread, if he was not willing to discuss some details, unless the sole purpose was for him to state he overcame some type of temptation and leave it at that.

I agree with you. I was hoping he would actually be honest about what this entire thing was all about. I think it would have helped in identifying what sort of normal human behavior/psychology was being labeled as "temptation" (I guess from the lord of darkness himself, Satan).
