2 Timothy 2:22 tells us to “flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” The inference seems to be plain: The young tend to pursue things that are far from the heart that God has given them. Such things may even lead to evil, ignoring the guidance from within which God gave to us.

But it is the old, those who have experienced more of life than youth have, who will take seriously what their God-given hearts try to tell them. Is it no wonder that God in Leviticus 19:32 commands us to “stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man”? Face it...People don’t live to be old by being stupid. There are ways a person can live to be old, but loving God makes it a sure thing unless God has other plans for you.

People who love God are mature and at peace, with youthful passions being just a goodbye. And Proverbs 14:30 says, “A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh.” Is it any wonder that old age comes with tranquility?

There may be people who are old, and one may wonder how they got that way when they’ve ignored the heart that God gave them. Perhaps God determined that they be around as a warning to those who are curious by paths that lead away from God. And ironically, those older people, who are not really old at heart, hold themselves up as idols for others, and they shout, “Look at me!” But those who became old with the love of God are not fooled, and those who want to live to an old age with God’s Love learn how not to act by looking at them. And those who are young are fortunate if they have enough wisdom under God in realizing what they are looking at.

Ecclesiastes 9:3 tells us that the young are prey to evil. But as far as many who are old under God are concerned, evil has to look elsewhere, to those who are less mature.
