• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I am a Christian and I have a lot of uncontrollable thoughts. I have had people that I just needed to be disciplined and control my thoughts. Others have told me I am thinking about myself too much and that is why I have great pain. There statements really hurt me. I have very big suspicions they dont have an inkling about what i'm going threw Is there other Christians that can relate? I am being very general. I hope there is someone out there who can relate.

Uncontrollable thoughts are more common with mania. Coping skills can help with this. With practice, getting your mind focused on a conversation, game, hobby, etc., can help get your thoughts turned to something totally different. Before you know it, those uncontrollable thoughts have passed. :)

People who say "get over it" or "why don't you just..." might be well-meaning, but really they have no idea.
angelkiss is right - distraction is helpful. Sometimes you need to vent the crazy stuff in your head - punch a punching bag, or chop wood, or something that tires you out. Other times you need to calm yourself - do a jigsaw puzzle, or some gardening.
I have found a combination of the two can sometimes work. It's like wanting to be punished, or have boundaries set, but also having compassion and understanding.
I put a rubberband around my wrist, and flick it when my thoughts are heading somewhere they shouldn't. Then I tell myself well done for recognising the warning signs, and stopping myself.
Hobbies are great. I always something to occupy myself while I'm at home on my own. Even with the TV on (another nice distraction) I am always doing something else at the same time.

They used to say "The devil finds work for idle hands" meaning if you aren't busy, you are getting up to no good.

I dunno if that helps, but yeah, I have been there, and nobody around me understands.

Strict fasting coupled with prayer and scripture study do wonders for an wandering nous. I can not recommend highly enough the book Orthodox Psychotherapy by Metropolitan Hierotheos Vlachos (not as intimidating as it sounds). As another has said, idleness is something to be avoided at all costs.

Hi Slaye! I totally understand what you mean. What helps me with any thought that just like...sticks to me. Meditating on the bible, and speaking out God's truth about the situation helps soooo much. I am living proof of that. I used to have really bad OCD, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety issues. I got a good understanding of who God really is and His love towards me. And when I get a thought that just feels so overwhelming the scripture "Cast all your cares (anxiety) on God for He cares (loves) you" comes up.. and I have to make the decision, sometimes fight to make the decision.. to just let it all go to God and just pray to my Father... it took me awhile to receive and know that He really loves me.
If you would like I can give you the name of the pastor that really helped me with learning about things that totally set me free. the pastor helped me to read the bible right.. like, sometimes things could be so confusing to us, but I have been able to understand and know that God loves me and how to receive God's freedom...
And God so loves YOU! And would love for you to experience who He really is, a God of love and freedom.
I hope I helped. I'm a little tired so I am sorry if my sentences were a little jumbled or something haha. Have a great day. :)

Depends upon what those thoughts are:

1. Intrusive-don't really jive with who you are and they aren't nice.
2. Racing thoughts-sometimes caused by anxiety or feeling overwhelmed.
3. Creative thoughts that poke up at the oddest times, like when I'm just getting ready to drop off to sleep. I'll suddenly start thinking of something I want to do and then I can get to sleep unless I write it down. I have that quite a bit. It comes with other things to. I might think of all of the things I didn't/couldn't get done that still need doing.

The first is based upon demonic attacks/oppression.

The second, for me, is usually from fear or anger that is because of fear. So fear, when I get right down to it, after having prayed and worked my tail off to try and figure what is going on, the underlying issue is almost always fear.

The third, I write it all down. If it's things I didn't get done, I make a list for the morning or when I get up and then I try to get some of it done. It helps.

I understand you Slaye!! Whenever that happens to me I like to put my earphones on & listen to Christian cds. The Lord always ministers to me whenever I do that. Gets my mind on Him & off of the problem!!
