As far as I know the clean/unclean meat laws were universally believed to be abrogated by Christains for almost 2000 years. Do any of you know when the belief by some that they are still in effect take hold in Christian history? I know at least Seventh Day Adventitsts and MJ's hold to this doctrine. Thanks!

To make my question perhaps easier to understand, Does anyone know of when there began to be Christian groups saying we should follow Jewish food laws? They weren't here all along, were they? Thanks!

I have no idea... The idea that we no longer have to follow that law is from the new testament, I do not know the exact verse but Jesus said something to the affect that all the old religious laws were now void and that we now only needed to follow the laws that he has said.

You are right! There just seems to be lots of MJ's and SDA's and such on these boards that try to put us under the Levitical food laws and I was wondering when that kind of thinking began to get popular among some Christians. If no one knows, no big deal.

don't you find it odd that Jesus berated the Pharisees for placing the traditions over the commandments and yet according to most people's understanding of Mark 7v19, Jesus appears to overturn sets of commandment completely. Is this not hypocrisy?

Besides that, the OT teaches that anyone who added to the commandments or took away from them was most definately a false prophet come to test the people of God.

What then should we make of Jesus' claims of Messiahship in this light.

Steve

p.s. groups who have maintained the dietary and sabbath rules have been around throughout church history but most fell into obscurity once the Church began forcing Jewish believers to eat pork as a sign of their conversion. Antiochus Epiphanes would have been proud that he had desecrated the temple with a pig... the abomination that causes desolation appears to have been legitimised by the traditional Christian understanding of the dietary laws.

As told in the Bible itself, it started back during when the Apostles themselves were still alive. As we read in the Acts of the Apostles, the very first serious debate was whether Gentiles who converted from their Pagan faiths to Christianity needed to become Jews first, which meant getting circumcised if they were male and to follow the ritual/holiness laws or whether they didn't.

As read, it was decided that Gentiles didn't have to become Jews first because Judaism denies Jesus the Christ, so it made no sense for someone to join a incorrect religion before joining the right one.

Unfortunately, this "Jewish Christian" sect continued on its own way whereas Pauline/Historic Christianity went on its own. These "Jewish Christians" did believe in Christ being the Savior, but they denied a lot of orthodox theology about Him, and therefore they kept kosher laws, etc.

This group died out. They either converted to Christianity (ie: REAL Christianity; The Church), converted to REAL Judaism, and the rest simply passed away leaving no adherents left.

If their beliefs were truly orthodox, surely God would have kept the faith alive. The fact that it died out before the 3rd century is enough proof for any that such ideas are not orthodox.

It's as old as Christianity. There were Jeudo-Christian churches like the Ebionites who rejected Paul and taught that Gentiles had to become Jews, get circumcised, and follow the OT Law before they could become real Christians. On the other extream would be those like Marcion who rejected the idea of the god of the OT being the Father of Christ to begin with. Some people had more moderate views in between the two. Things were very diverse even throughout the first couple centuries.

Paul clearly writes that when Peter came to Antioch that he had to rebuke him publicly because he was committing hypocrisy, Paul said in Galatians 2:14
14 When I saw that they were not following the truth of the gospel message, I said to Peter in front of all the others, “Since you, a Jew by birth, have discarded the Jewish laws and are living like a Gentile, why are you now trying to make these Gentiles follow the Jewish traditions?

We Gentiles should not follow Jewish traditions, or are you wanting to make us Christians slaves to Jewish Laws?
