  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I listen to secular music sometimes too. Sometimes secular music can be sinful, though.
Take, for instance, rap music. Most of the time they're singing about getting with girls and about drugs, violence, etc. Do you really think that's pleasing to God? If you really think that that stuff is okay, you might want to think again...

There is nothing wrong with listening to secular music, however, as others have already pointed out, be careful what you listen to, and choose not to listen to ANY music that violates Christian principles. This applies to all genres of music, and not just to rock music. There are even some classical pieces of music that are dubious-one that comes to mind would be "Night On Bald Mountain" by Musorgsky, which has occult overtones.

Personally, I listen to both Christian and secular music. As to secular, I like pre-1964 rock (especially the type of music that is often called DooWop) and classical. But one must be careful what they listen to in both secular and in Christian music. If it is called Christian, yet has bad theology (and this can be in modern or old hymns), then discard it.
