• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Ok, so I quit for 6 months when I joined the military and had to do all of my training. You were not allowed to smoke during training and with having all the instructors yelling at you all the time you didnt even think about it. But, since ive come back ive started up (about a year ago.) I keep trying to quit, I usually make it to day 3 or day 4, but the urges and the irritation from what goes on, on base really makes it difficult. The last thing I want to do is get so irritated or cranky that I ruin my career, last thing I want to do. So, I made the decision a few weeks ago to smoke a whole pack in an hour, maybe thinking how sick it would make me and not want to smoke again. Worked for 5 days. Then jumped aboard, mind you ive slowed down from my normal 2 packs a day, and im down to prolly around 4-6 cigarettes a day, sometimes less.

Im just curious what you all used as a method to quit when you got so stressed out, I can handle quite a bit of stress being a cop and all, but when it comes to these cravings they whoop me all over the place!! Any tips, I refuse to use nicoderm ect, plain and simple. Ive heard to many horror stories and not enough good stories ect.

Please im desperate, im dissapointing a lot of people, mostly my gf and family, by telling them that i keep quitting only to have to be caught smoking and feeling bad cuz I broke down.

Anyways, someone told me to try clover cigarettes, supposedly it helps, wondering if it is true?

Thanks a bunch, I really appreciate it. :)

I tried those clover cigs. They are NASTY!! I put them down myself after the first 3 packs. It's just like it's not worth it to smell and taste something so horrible. The best thing that you can possibly do is to divert your attention from the craving. Don't let yourself think about it. Drop and do some push-ups, run, paperwork, ANYTHING that will dirvert your attention. The craving WILL go away after a few minutes if you ignore it!

You were in the military. You should be accustomed to suffering. Prepare yourself for some sublime suffering. I am using the word suffering deliberately because that is exactly what it is going to be.

1) You have to have a plan. Identify the reasons that you smoke. After you identify the reasons begin to deal with them one at a time from the top.
2) You have to have some method of dealing with the suffering.
3) You need cardio. Hard core eyes about to fall out of your skull - totally incompatible with smoking cardio. I used a mountain bike.
4) You need some method of relieving tension. See #3 and consider other options as well.

You are going to suffer. You will be in pain. You will have to go through emotional and pysical stress. It will seem like it will last forever.

The good news is that it will eventually go away if and only if you abstain from nicotine TOTALLY. That one cigarette will drag you kicking and screaming and kill weeks of effort.

5) Develop an abject fear of ever coming into contact with nicotine. The suffering you feel is a direct result of your use of nicotine. If you use nicotine again the pain will come again.

If you are going to quit cold turkey - be prepared to deal with the pain.

More power to you for quitting! I know several people who quit smoking only to lose it, and start again. They tried again and again, and failed again and again! Don't worry, those were only for practice, because those who tried one last time after multiple failures succeeded!! You can do it!
