Hi everyone,
Um, I don't usually come on to these forums, and I myself don't cut myself or something like that (though have talked to people who do), but today while I was eating some very spicy food I came up with a theory. I'm no expert or anything, but I thought I had to post this some where because it might help somebody.
Okay, so I eat a lot of spicy foods. So today while I was eating a piece of cheese bread soaked in hot sauce I remembered something I'd read earlier. Chili peppers cause pain in your mouth. Your brain registers this and your body produces a chemical to neutralize the pain. Many people become somewhat addicted to spicy foods for this reason.
And then I remembered something else: In the same way, cutting yourself also releases a chemical to numb the pain caused by the injury. That is why people become addicted to cutting themselves.
(or so I've read.)
In fact, a page on WikiHow suggests doing activities which are mentioned as also releasing endorphins, like running.
So... this is my theory. If you want to stop cutting yourself, will eating spicy food help you quit?
(And this is coming from somebody who can tell you that eating spicy food definately makes you happier. I have a hotsauce collection and I once... twice ate a garlic with hot sauce and wasabi just for the rush.)
Well, it's a thought. I'm no expert though. Just hope this helps any of you struggling out there and good luck!

-WikipediaThe "capsaicin high" is a euphoric sensation caused by the consumption of large quantities of capsaicin from capsaicin-laden foods. It is theorized that the pain induced by capsaicin causes the human body to release endorphins. Eventually, enough are released to create a sensation that is frequently compared to "runner's high".[1]

-WikipediaIn 1999, clinical researchers reported that inserting acupuncture needles into specific body points triggers the production of endorphins [2]. In another study, higher levels of endorphins were found in cerebrospinal fluid after patients underwent acupuncture. In addition, naloxone appeared to block acupuncture’s pain-relieving effects.
