  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was just talking to a friend of mine yesterday about this very issue. I was giving her a tour of my church which is the Cathedral in our diocese and had 8 tons of marble altars and rails destroyed years ago. Some of the carvings were saved and I use them in my youth space.

She shared with me how she returned to an old parish of hers this weekend and was stunned to find an old but beautiful refurbished altar there that hadn't been there a year before. Recently the church underwent a change in parish priests. One of the members of the church approached the priest and told him the story of the "modernization" that occurred 30 years ago. This man is now 86 but when they modernized the church he was helping with the work. He was told to destroy the old altar but he couldn't bear to do it so he put the old altar in his basement. With the new priest came the opportunity to clean it up and re-install it in the Church. Isn't that awesome?!

Now their difficulty is that the choir has planted itself between the altar and the tabernacle throughout the entire Mass and they don't kneel at any point during the Mass. One step at a time I guess!
