• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Try to have no caffeine in the afternoon or evening. Do something relaxing right before bed...take a hot bath/shower, read the bible, pray. Do not have electronics in your bedroom. Have a cool room...it promotes sleeping. Make sure that room is dark enough. Light interrupts sleep patterns.

If you have bipolar, then contact your doctor about being put on a mild sedative. Sleep is very important to your mental health.

Oooh honey, I feels.
I have had less than desirable sleep for a couple of years now. ....it's either 3 hours or 18 hours.
I am in the process of fixing things (with a sleep specialist) but like all things it takes time.
I have tried the blue-light thing, the retraining the circadian rhythm thing, the sleeping pills thing, and other things that didn't work. Having had a sleep study, I was told I do not have sleep apnoea, but I do snore. ...like on a scale of 1 to 10, I'm at jackhammers. LOL!
I'm going to get my tonsils (and hopefully adenoids) out, cos the little buggers are freakin' huge. After that (if that doesn't help) I get to spend megabucks on a cpap machine. Ooh yay. Joy is me. ...That is kind of the end of the line - there's nothing after that, so it HAS to work.

Anyhoo - the reason I'm telling you all this, is there is hope for you. See your family doctor, say that you DON'T want sleeping pills, that you want a real, long term solution. It may be a long process, or you may find a solution that is simple and works for you. (Ugh, I WOULD be the 1%)

In the mean time, I can recommend cable TV - there is ALWAYS something good on, in the middle of the night.

I've had two nights in the last four days where I haven't slept a wink. I'm not sure what to do, maybe I'm getting over stimulated before bed.

Help?

Not sleeping is my major trigger for a bipolar episode. I asked my Dr. what my medical options were. She gave me the option of Tegretol or Melatonin. I chose the Melatonin since I had heard not so good things about Tegretol. On a fluke when I had a cold I found out I could take a night time sleeping medicine like NyQuil and it would knock me out. So from time to time I get to sleep that way.

Everybody is different so you may have to try several things before you hit on something. The best thing to do is to talk with your Dr. and see what your options are. If it's a while before you can get in to see your Dr. call the 24 hour Nurse line at your local hospital (many have them) and ask them what is a safe OTC (Over the counter) sleeping aid for someone like you who takes xyz meds. Watch your diet and exercise early in the day. Consider going on line to find some relaxation techniques or calming nature sounds (YouTube). Try your best to stay away from people and/or things that upset you. Also don't be hard on yourself. Most Bipolars go through this on the regular so it's okay. There is some relief for you. You just have to find it.

Peace and rest to you sister :) :groupray:

*Just wanted to add that you can also check with your Pharmacy regarding OTC sleep aids...

I snore like crazy and use a c-pap machine and it helps so much , had a hard time finding a mask that fit my face it to 3 years finily found one that fits right , so sleep is much better .

That's comforting to know (for me in my situation) I'm glad cpap works for you. I will be there by Christmas I hope. It's a shame this process takes years! In the mean time, trying to remain cognitively aware enough to hold down a job (On my second warning) and pay bills on time (or even empty the letterbox) put the bins out on Tuesdays..... this is what people don't understand.
