That was the golden globe awards in 2003. He said "this is [EDIT]ing Brilliant!" I say good on him! He is a rock "n" roll star; he should have the right to cuss. I don't want to see him become another Cliff Richards LOL. It's a pity his stopped cussing on this tour though. Not even recent interviews. According a poster on Interference Bono said he is trying to sop it.

See? This is what I don't get at all.

Why is the "[EDIT]ing" in "this is [EDIT]ing Brilliant!" considered a swear? What's wrong with it? I'd call it a slang.

I wouldn't, only because of all the poptart garbage that's out there today.

If we rate a band/artist by how well they do, then Backstreet Boys, N*Sync, Britney, Christina.....would all be considered 'great', based soley on 'how well their albums do'........

Aside from the obvious of using the Lord's name in vain, who told you that saying s___, f___, d___, or h___ was wrong? Is it that the Lord says those specific words are wrong, or society? And please do not quote the "let no unwholesome talk" verse here, because it doesn't even apply, and if it does, it applies in such a broad sense that it can be construed several different ways.

That's my point too. I don't see a problem with those words, or strong words in any language, as long as they are used in a proper context for the situation. If they are used to take God's name in vain, then of course that is Biblically condemned.

God bless you, too, man. May I paraphrase what you just said? "I can't believe Bono curses! That's just wrong! I mean, well, I do it too 'cause, hey, nobody's perfect, but I just wish he wouldn't!" Well, I wish a lot of things for myself, those I love, and those I admire. Dropping the occasional profane word here and there just isn't something we should be getting worked up about...

It's sort-of like picking your nose or farting. Everyone has done it, but, is it "wrong", or is it just something better done while not standing in front of a crowd with a bunch of TV cameras rolling?

As to Britney Spears, etc., I would say that they have. I don't like their music one bit but I think the sheer popularity of their music could be said to have sparked a new genre. Again, I hate their work with a fiery passion but I won't deny that there are millions that disagree with me.

Let me make this clearer: I'm looking for an objective measure to rate an artist or group. Personal taste is not an objective measure. As well, you moved the goal posts. I never talked about musical impact, neither did MoreInSorrow, we talked about good and bad. What you're talking about, Foo, has no relevance to what either of us were discussing.

I do. I also know that my tastes are my own, and that they are a lousy way to judge "good" vs. "bad" as compared to everyone else. You're attempting to use your own standards as the universal standards by which all music is judged. I think that is an example of extreme hubris on your part.

Well then, we must consider that there might not be an objective measure to rate the greatness of a musical artist outside of revenue generated by said artist. So, I suppose you win, if that's the case. But, even this method of measurement is dependant upon the sbujective tastes of the individual. It appears you prefer one side of the coin, and moreinsorrow prefers the other, based on your post:
