Glad to find that somebody out there under the age of 30 appreciates U2's music...

Does anybody have any idea why some of the twentysomethings in this forum think U2's music is "predictable" and that Bono constantly writes lyrics talking about "how awesome he is"?!?!? I own all the U2 CD's except for Zooropa, and I don't know of one song like that. But, let me guess. Zooropa is the CD the song is on, right?

I love U2 - and not just for their music.

Their ability to shed light on injustice is applaudable, and Bono is certainly showing an 'active faith'.

I don't see any 'look how great we are' in any of their lyrics. What I DO see however, is a turning to scripture, a highlight of global issues, and a strong desire to get rid of injustice in the world...

People fail to realize that their arrogant self-righteous phase was them making fun of the music world, including themselves. I can't believe how many people totally missed that point.

no they aren't over rated. Not even the beatles are overrated.

Look, in order for a band to be over rated, they have to

a. be rated (no band is officially rated)
b. they have to actually have skills below the level that they were rated

sorry, but it's just a stupid question.

they've sold millions of records, they've sold out venue after venue. that should answer your question. people love them, people are inspired by them, and turned on to the beauty of music because of them. So yeah, they're doing a good job.

I'm assuming you're talking about the Zooropa/Pop era when you say "arrogant self-righteous phase". That was, I believe, their way of giving the whole grunge movement the finger...

Like who? And, please, for the love of God, don't insult me or any other U2 fan by lumping us in with the N'Sync and Britney Spears fans...

Not just pop musicians, but also the likes of The Rolling Stones or Paul McCartney. Can any musician really justify selling tickets for those prices?

And, since we're keeping it light-hearted, what is all this about Bono writing about how awesome he is? Which tune-or tunes- is that?

I don't know about writing about how awesome they are, but U2 seems to take themselves very seriously. I think it is laudable if Bono dedicates a portion of his life and money to Africa, but what right does he have to force his convictions on us? He claims that we only give these people the crumbs from our table, but what does he give? I also remember Bono addressing the graduates at a university a year or so ago and using the opportunity to speak about his work in Africa. Doesn't this seem a bit conceited?

I've heard some of their material from the 80s and I thought it was pretty boring...it didn't really do anything for me. It seems that many U2 fans have a rabid allegiance to the band. I personally haven't ever heard anything by U2 that I thought was beautiful or brilliant, but different strokes I suppose.

I'm sorry if that sounds aggressive...it's just my opinion, if you like U2, enjoy their music and don't worry about what other people think.

Dude, I was asking a hypothetical question to generate discussion, so lighten up. I don't need you to "explain" to me what overrated means, but thanks for making everyone aware that there is no "official" rating system for bands.

The definition of overrated is simply "to place excessive value upon (someone or something)". Having been a fan for years, and seen them live, I know what their skill level is. But, maybe you shouldn't have ASSumed what I meant before pointing out how "stupid" my question was.

But, based on the stupidity of your remarks above, the question must, indeed, have been stupid...

No it's all good. And I agree, there is a time and place for everything. But I guess it's a matter of whether or not you think that them being on stage allows Bono a forum to share something dear to him, or if you think they're simply there for entertainment value and nothing more.

But you're right. No worries here, just discussing comments made. It's all good.

I don't think that Bono talks about his work to glorify himself. I think his goal is to raise awareness about the issues that he is passionate about. To the person that asked what Bono has given, I don't know a lot of specifics, but I would bet a lot of money that he has given more money and time to humanitarian efforts than most of us have.

As you can probably tell, I don't think they are overrated.
