Bear,
I'd like to speculate that even though this was in the works, the big players (China, France, Russia) were waiting until after the midterms to see what kind of domestic support Bush was going to have. They wanted to have as much control of the situation as possible, but without risking the possibility of the US going it alone and rendering the UN irrelevant. Bush operating with a Democraticly controlled house and/or senate is a quite different situation than what we have now. A loss in the UN with the current US political situation would have, IMO, meant unilateral action in Iraq, whereas the house or senate in the hands of the Dems would have made unilateral action less likely. Just a thought.

There is an old saying, "If you throw a stone at a pack of dogs, the dog that barks first, is the one who got hit." ;)

Well, thus far I am the only non-American to post anything in this thread. :)

But if you don't want to explain your earlier statement, that's fine with me.

Yikes!  I usually enjoy reading your posts TheBear but IMHO this notion leaves a lot to be desired.

I think it reeks of the "We're American's - we can any darn thing we want - and no one can stop us!" attitude that many outsiders ridicule and fear us over.

Americans do need to learn to get by on this planet without cheesing off every other nation.  19 men thought it was necessary to crash our planes into our buildings for a reason - and we create many more terrorists like this when our actions indicate that we don't give a d*mn about the rest of the world.

A logical speculation, MSBS. However, how much stock are you placing in the idea that those countries' major and global policy decisions, are based on the popular opinion of Americans? It may have been a factor, but very minimal, at best.

You have misunderstood my remarks, Starscream. I'll be the first to admit that our country is not without it's shortcomings and failures. Anyone who thinks otherwise, is living an extremely isolated and sheltered life.

My point goes to anyone, not from this country, "telling" us how things are here. I would never be so presumptious as to go to a predominately French website, for example, and "tell" them how things are, base on things I've read. There seems to be a few on this board, who are exclusively and narrowly focused on the United States, in a constantly negative way.

It just gets tiring and offensive. :(

Again, since you're obviously referring to the only non-American posting in this thread, please provide specific examples. Please prove exclusivity of focus as well.
Here's the other question: in a forum where we discuss no other nations but the US, do you construe disagreements of any sort to be "exclusively and narrowly focused on the United States"?

BTW Starscream,

I do take issue with your "Blame America First" attitude.

I simply feel we need to become more responsible for our actions.  I also think we need to become more aware of how our international presence affects the rest of the world.

I would wager that many Amercians that support bombing Iraq could not even find it on a map (heck, many can't even find Canada on the map).  That disturbs me.

This opinion falsely assumes that America is mostly irresponsible and blind about our position in the world. Trust me, every international policy decision is met with arduous and painstaking consideration of all factors. And, as I have said before, we do make mistakes, but I don't agree with your overall implications that our shortcommings are the rule, and not the exception.

How do you come to this conclusion? Are you saying that you are much smarter and informed than the majority of Americans? WOW!!! I won't go there, but you know what this sounds like.

I don't wish to get into a nasty argument, John, I just want America and Americans to live up to high standards.

Have a nice week-end.

I agree. America and Americans should, and for the most part, do live up to standards, 2nd to none. The United States is the standard by which a lot of countries strive to achieve.

You have a great weekend too, Starscream. :)

Hi Bear,

Yes, I live in the Seattle area, the use-to-be land of rain, rain and more rain.  Over the past couple of years it's become the land of drought, drought, and more drought ;)

I do believe with all of my heart, that America has very high standards, with the desire for equality and opportunity for those who live in a dictorial (?) and oppressive country.  We hear negativity in the press about the bombings in Afghanistan, but it is becoming a liberated country and is slowly yet surely becoming a country where it's citizens are freed from their oppression and having opportunities they didn't have before.  For example, school for girls, whereas before they weren't allowed to.

I can't help but be proud of the country I live in, and am very grateful that I live here and not somewhere else.

~Peace in Christ,

Terri

Bear,

Get outta here, really?  We're south of there.  Bothell has grown by leaps and bounds ~ as has every other place around here.

When was the last time you were here?  If it's been awhile, I doubt you'd even recognize it :(

btw..you're welcome of the input.  I love this country, and I was commenting to my neighbor last night that I am blessed and very thankful that the Lord placed me here in this country rather than a country such as Iraq **shudder** **sigh of relief**

~Peace in Christ,

Terri
