I was just reading a thread and the following were given as "types " of Mary

I guess I was taken back because as a protestant see them as other things .

  • Ark of Noah (Genesis 6)
It was built by divine command to escape the effects of sin, as is Mary.

  • Jacob’s Ladder (Genesis 28)
Foreshadowing of Marian intercession.

  • Burning Bush (Exodus 3)
Held the presence of God without corruption.

  • Ark of the Covenant (2 Samuel, Genesis, Exodus, Joshua)
Concretizes the covenant between Yahweh and the people by what it contains (commandments- law, staff of Aaron- priesthood, manna). Mary contains the great lawgiver, the high priest, the Eucharistic Lord.

How does the church decide what the types are in scripture and how do we confirm the truth of them?

For instance The ark in my understanding is a type of Christ ( the blood is poured out on it and the mercy seat is upon it.)

The burning bush to me is clearly God (Our God is a consuming fire)

I did not realize that there was a difference of opinion on this.

heh,heh,heh....

one way to confirm the truth in differing opinions on what 'types' represent is to see if it contradicts scripture, such as if it is unBiblical.

If it doesn't clearly point to Christ, which is after all, what the entire Bible is about, it is prolly not right.

if it points to salvation thru any other way than God has commanded in His word

& if other Scrips contradict those interps. Noah's ark, f'rinstance is explained in one a' the Peters, innit? that it's a type of Christ.

Finding a bunch of unrelated scriptures and combining to make a doctrine without any scriptural reason to do so is not exegesis. In fact, it could be used to prove a lot of things.
