  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I love mince! I've got a jar of homemade mincemeat aging, just waiting to be turned into pies or tarts!
Actually, I really don't know what Mincemeat is.

Could you enlighten this poor yank?

Hope you don't mind a lesson in culinary history!

People have been making mince (as a way to preserve food) since ancient times. Mincemeat pies date back to the Middle Ages, and contained meat, suet, dried fruit, spices, and sugar. By the 16th century, they were a traditional Christmas food. It was also a favorite recipe of Henry VIII.

In the mid 19th century, people began to distinguish between mince and mincemeat (the former no longer contained meat, the latter did). Modern mince rarely contains meat but does typically contains nuts, brandy, or sometimes sherry. The most common fruits used are apples, raisins, sultanas, and sometimes plums or cherries.

A recipe for mincemeat from 1875 says to take a pound of beef, a pound of apples, two pounds of suet, two pounds of sugar, two pounds of currants, one pound of candied lemon or orange peel, a quarter of a pound of citron, and an ounce of fine spices; mix all these together, with half an ounce of salt, and the rinds of six lemons shred fine. See that the ingredients are thoroughly incorporated, and add brandy or wine according to taste.

Totally off point but it's (theoretically) illegal to eat Christmas pudding over here. Cromwell passed a law saying so which has never been repealled.

Really? Ooh! Hallelujah! Never liked the stuff anyway... although when we lived in the States, my parents had loads of people over for Christmas (We always do, wherever we live, 'cept in the UK it's all family...) and they tried to persuade our guests that the english tradition was that you fed the person opposite you their food. They were nearly gullible enough....

^_^ ^_^ ^_^

On a related note, a Canadian friend of mine once convinced a very guillible American mutual friend that Canadians celebrated Christmas a month early - which made perfect sense to the mutual friend, because Canadian Thanksgiving is also a month early.

If I just call it "figgy duff" and don't decorate it with a holly leaf, can I get away with it then?

Or do I have to forego the pretty blue flames, too...

We have four children. On Christmas Eve, before going to bed they will each leave out a mince pie and a small glass of whisky, or whiskey if I'm (sorry Santa's) lucky. And they have to be eaten as well because our kids aint daft. They count how many mince pies are in the tin on Christmas day. Such is life, we all have our crosses....

Oh, and the reindeer get a carrot as well.
