Holy Family is the only Roman Catholic church in Gaza.

Two Christian women were killed on Saturday by an Israeli sniper at the Catholic Holy Family parish in Gaza, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said on Saturday morning.

The patriarchate said in a statement that “around noon” on Dec. 16, a sniper of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) “murdered two Christian women inside the Holy Family Parish in Gaza, where the majority of Christian families has taken refuge since the start of the war.”

Nahida and her daughter Samar were shot and killed as they walked to the sisters’ convent,” the statement said. “One was killed as she tried to carry the other to safety.”

“The post said another seven people were “shot and wounded” while trying to “protect others inside the church compound.”

“No warning was given; no notification was provided,” the patriarchate said. “They were shot in cold blood inside the premises of the parish, where there are no belligerents.”

Vatican News on Saturday reported that the attack was allegedly “justified by Israelis” who “claimed the presence of a rocket launcher in the parish.”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has denied culpability over the deaths of two Christian Palestinian women who were reportedly killed at the Holy Family Parish complex in Gaza on Saturday morning.

“No warning was given, no notification was provided,” the patriarchate said. “They were shot in cold blood inside the premises of the parish, where there are no belligerents.”

In an emailed statement to CNA, the IDF said that it had received the letter “describing a tragic incident that took place in the Holy Family Parish.”

I'm doubting it was Israel.

This is very sad. I have to wonder about the sniper's motives, though. Was he intentionally targeting Christians? I know that there have been some streaks of anti-Christian hatred in Israel in recent years, but as far as I am aware, it was only among the extremely conservative Orthodox Jews. I hope the hatred hasn't spread to other factions of the Jewish people.

Well, considering the rocket launcher was found there why be so skeptical of the motive of the IDF?
What motive was there in putting a rocket launcher in a Church, they were taking "refuge" in? that is the larger question. Hamas is well known for this kind of stuff. They operate from hospitals, schools, why not a Church?
