  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have 2 questions:

1. How long are you supposed to not eat before receiving Communion on Sunday? Sometimes I forget and eat a little something after midnight when I get weak. :pink:

2. I was asked if I would like to chant during services. I don't know the songs. Is there a site or something with lyrics? I know how to chant Lord have Mercy and that's it ^_^

Thanks for being here; I have found good talk and information here. God grant you all many years.

The first question I would ask my priest about. He'd be the best one to talk about. Some people (like diabetics) can't do a total fast before receiving communion, and they have to have something before communion or they would pass out or have a reaction.

The general rule is no eating or drinking after midnight. Talk to your Priest. Our Priest has throat problems, and drinks a little water when he needs it during Orthros. He allows us chanters to drink a little water if necessary. Also, if you have medication that requires water or food, those details can be worked out with your Priest. It's not a legalism, it's just setting aside something good (food) to prepare for something better (Eucharist).

I started chanting about a year or so ago, and I've found a few good resources on-line, but I learned the most by just standing up there and listening to the other chanters and photocopying their music. Depending on what jurisdiction you're in, there are great books out there with just about everything you need. We use the "Divine Prayers and Services" book by Nassar. (I'm Antiochian- do other jurisdictions use this book? hmm- maybe I'll start a new thread to ask this question...)
