There is a physical kind and there is a spiritual kind.

The first kind of Sabbath rest was periodic, Exodus 34:
21 Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest.

Every Sabbath day (Friday sundown to Saturday sundown), the Israelites were commanded to cease physical labor.

The second kind of Sabbath rest is quite different, Hebrew 4:
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. 9So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God,

It is a permanent spiritual resting state of being, Psalm 95:
10 For forty years I loathed that generation and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.”

They knew the first kind of Sabbath rest. They practiced it every week. Yet,
11 Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter my rest [H4496].”

But they did not attain to the second kind of Sabbath rest.

Strong's Hebrew: 4496. מְנוּחָה (menuchah or menuchah) — 22 Occurrences

Brown-Driver-Briggs:
  1. resting-place …
  2. rest (from enemies) = peace 1 Kings 8:56 (compare 1 Kings 5:18), ׳אִישׁ מ 1 Chronicles 22:9 a man of peace (compare הֵנִיחַ vb);

H4496 can mean peace and rest. It is a state of being, Isaiah 28:
12 to whom he said, “This is the resting place,

It was not a resting time.
let the weary rest"; and, “This is the place of repose"— but they would not listen.

Jeremiah 6:
16 This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

That's different from rest for your physical body.

Jesus spoke in Matthew 11:
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

The physical Sabbath rest is only a type of the spiritual true-type of Sabbath rest. We come to the true Sabbath peace and rest by coming to Jesus.

There is only one seventh day Sabbath rest, not two. There is Christ rest which is different than the Sabbath rest as we see clearly in Hebrews 4. Jesus is not a commandment or rest, He is the Creator of all things not the creation i,e, rest, law.

We also need to make sure we are not working from a faulty premise. God wrote the Ten Commandments with His own finger, Deut 4:13 Exodus 31:18 these are His works Exodus 32:16 that cannot be edited in any way and He made that clear. Deut 4:2 The earthy temple was an exact mirror image of God's heavenly Temple Hebrews 8:5 where lies the Ten Commandments Revelation 11:19 under His mercy seat, so no scripture can contradict this and it doesn't just misunderstandings.
The second kind of Sabbath rest is quite different, Hebrew 4:
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on.
The rest in Hebrews 4:8 is not the Sabbath rest as shown, here is what the rest in this verse translates into…it’s not connected to the Sabbath rest/commandment.

katapauó: to cause to cease, to rest
Original Word: καταπαύω
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: katapauó
Phonetic Spelling: (kat-ap-ow'-o)
Definition: to cause to cease, to rest
Usage: (a) trans: I cause to rest, bring to rest; I cause to refrain, (b) intrans: I rest.

One would need to be familiar with the story of Joshua to understand what this means as it is taking us back to that story as an example. The Israelites rebelled in the wilderness and were not able to enter their rest to the promise land which is why it was delayed and another day was spoken of.

9So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God,
The rest in Hebrews 4:9 NIV is referring to the Sabbath-rest and rest here literally translates into Sabbath-keeping, which remains (not changed) for the people of God which reconciles with God's Word.

Strong's Concordance
4520. sabbatismos
sabbatismos: a sabbath rest
Original Word: σαββατισμός, οῦ, ὁ
Part of Speech: Noun, Masculine
Transliteration: sabbatismos
Phonetic Spelling: (sab-bat-is-mos')
Definition: a sabbath rest
Usage: a keeping of the Sabbath, a Sabbath rest.

The whole meaning of Hebrews 4 is to compare the disobedience of the Israelites and bring us back to today to not follow their same path so we can enter into our rest and our Promise Land.

Hebrews 4:6 Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience,

Hebrews 4:11
Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.

What did the Israelites disobey in the wilderness? Scripture tells us if we allow scripture to interpret scripture

Eze 20:13 Yet the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness; they did not walk in My statutes; they despised My judgments, ‘which, if a man does, he shall live by them’; and they greatly defiled My Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out My fury on them in the wilderness, to consume them.

Which is why there is a plea TODAY- if we hear His voice do not harden your heart in rebellion

Hebrews 4:7 again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:
“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”

Which is a direct quote from David

Psalms 95:7 For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture,
And the sheep of His hand.
Today, if you will hear His voice:
8 “Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion,
As in the day of trial in the wilderness,

We are called not to rebel against God like the Israelites did and they profaned His Sabbath. Eze 20:13, Eze 20:21

Which is why the Sabbath-rest remains for the people of God Heb 4:9 NIV which again literally translates into Sabbath-keeping

We are followers of Christ…

Hebrews 4:10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

When did God rest from His works? This very passage tells us. The same day God commanded us to as we are made in His image to follow Him, not do our own thing, which is called rebellion.

Hebrews 4: 4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works

This brings us right back to the Sabbath commandment that cannot be edited Deut 4:2 and remains for God's people Hebrews 4:9 NIV

In Christ rests there is no rebellion which is why He pleas with us Today if you hear His voice do not harden your heart in rebellion so we can enter into our rest and not follow the same path of the Israelites. Hebrews 3:7-8 Hebrew 3:15 Psalms 95:7-8 Eze 20:13, Eze 20:21

There’s more than one Sabbath in scripture, but there is only one weekly seventh day Sabbath commandment that is Gods eternal commandments written personally by God Deut 4:13 Exo 32:16 Exodus 20:8-11, Mathew 5:19, Rev 11:19

It has to be in context. Every time we see rest in scripture doesn’t mean it’s connected to the weekly seventh day Sabbath, scripture will let us know when it’s referring to the Sabbath commandment, if we allow scripture to interpret itself.

Brown-Driver-Briggs:

How do we obtain peace according to scripture? Which is exactly what Hebrews 4 is warning us about if read in context.

Isaiah 48:18 Oh, that you had heeded My commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, And your righteousness like the waves of the sea.

Same as the prophecy in Revelations…

Revelation 14: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

The antidote to receiving the mark of the beast? The next verse reveals that…

Revelation 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

In Christ rest there is no rebellion to Him or His commandments, which is why there is a plea TODAY if we hear His voice, do not harden your heart Hebrews 3:7-8 Psalms 95:7-8 Hebrews 3:15 we know not what tomorrow brings, we should obey today through love and faith. 1 John 5:3, Rev 14:12 Romans 3:31 Revelation 22:14

Hi Sb, the meaning of "Today" as in Hebrews 3&4 is not what you think i.e. today as this day etc. But "Today" is the day you will hear Him speak..It's a sign of holiness to hear God speak directly to us.

Hi Sb, the meaning of "Today" as in Hebrews 3&4 is not what you think i.e. today as this day etc. But "Today" is the day you will hear Him speak..It's a sign of holiness to hear God speak directly to us.
It’s a quote from David, the scripture explains itself….

Heb 4: 7 again He designates a certain day, saying in David,Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:

“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”

Here’s the original quote:

Psalms 95:
7 For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture,
And the sheep of His hand.
Today, if you will hear His voice:
8 “Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion,
As in the day of trial in the wilderness,

Hebrews 4 is a continuation of Hebrews 3

Hebrews 4:7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:

“Today, if you will hear His voice,
8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,

In the day of trial in the wilderness,

Hebrews 3:15.
while it is said:
“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

We should allow scripture to interpret scripture and not lean on our own understandings. Pro 3:5-6. Jesus did not turn into the Sabbath commandment (rest) and sad people try to make this argument instead of heading the warning it gives us for our own good.

"Spirit" interpret Scriptures. Not scriptures interpret scriptures hence why so many beliefs.
So, have you ever heard God speak directly to you "today"? If so, what is His voice sounds like?

The Spirit will teach us what God’s Word says, not our own ideas and opinions. God’s Word interprets itself if we allow it to, it’s when we start adding our own ideas to God’s Word, when it becomes danger. Isaiah 8:20 Proverbs 3:5-6

John 14:28 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. (The Word of God, not our own ideas)

When the writer of Hebrews is quoting David in Psalms, we look for scripture in Psalms to interpret scripture, not introduce something that is not in scripture. Scripture will interpret almost all scripture and is referenced someplace else in scripture if we allow it to- God reveals His will through His Word. The Holy Spirit will never go away from the Word of God, if so, that is coming from ”the other spirit” we are warned about in God’s Holy Word. Isaiah 8:20

Scripture interprets Scripture. Spirit interprets Scripture. We interpret Scripture.

All true.

The Holy Spirit will never go away from the Word of God, if so, that is coming from ”the other spirit” we are warned about in God’s Holy Word. Isaiah 8:20
You're denying the Holy Spirit work of teaching us what scriptures meant.

What you see in Hebrews 4 about "Today" is not the same as how I see it. There is deeper meaning of what is actually written. I.e physical point to spiritual (spiritual understanding).

Sorry, it really is as clear as day, ”as it has been said” means it’s a quote from previously and even says “saying in David” so it’s telling us where to go and its the identical quote, you are disagreeing with the Text. God tells us not to depend on our own understandings of scriptures, because it will lead us down the wrong path. Prov 3:5-6 Proverbs 14:12 He will guide our path and His Word is the light to our path Psalms 119:105, the Holy Spirit guides us to what the Word says, not some other personal interpretation. When Jesus was tempted, He went back to the Word of God- going away from God’s Word, there is no light meaning its danger. Isaiah 8:20

Yes God spoke the day "Today" in the time of David It was because Joshua, years earlier wasn't able to give Israel the "Rest" God intended when they reach the promise land.

Verse 6..For if Joshua had given them "rest" God would not have spoken "later" about another day.
("later" indicate when God spoke later in the time of David because Joshua earlier wasn't able to give that "Rest").

Follow verse by verse in Hebrews 4.
