  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Isn't it wierd that there is such a wide discrepancy? It's like people are going and seeing two completely different movies. It only goes to show how truthfull this movie truely is; people are either brought to tears, or disgusted and offended.

I posted this in the PRE too, but I thought it was interesting enough to post in both. Hope I don't get in trouble.

Although...

I almost would agree with this quote however:

"If Jesus actually received the amount of punishment dished out in this film, he would have been dead three times over before arriving at Calvary. "

I mean, from what I've seen, this movie makes graphic sound, "subtle"...I could see the point of the above quote...

It doesn't take much to kill a man, I'll tell ya that.

Of course, you could say that Christ, through his Godly power, lasted as long as he did, because of his own power. But I don't know. I tend to not believe that.

I don't think we'll ever really know how brutal it really was for our Lord.

Plus the fact that his skin was sensitized from 'the agony in the garden'. He literally sweated blood in anticipation of the sufferings to come...this is now known to be a medical condition where a person is under such severe stress that their capillaries burst and they sweat blood.

These mixed opinions aren't just about 'true' movies. I remember Return of the King and other high profile movies getting very oposed reviews on different sites, or from different people.

The passion of Christ has not opened here yet. Most of the time, we are a few months behind on the US for US movie openings. I must say that I've not yet decided wether or not I am going to see it. I feel obligated in one way, but more as a film amateur then as a Christian. On the other hand, I KNOW I'm one of these people that's going to be sick in the theater.

Those people forget the body's ability to adapt -- go into "shock" -- under such duress.

Jesus wasn't exactly carrying the Cross with any ease, that's for sure!!!

I was blown away by this film. It didn't emphasize enough the divinity of Jesus yet His bond with His mother and to see how there were good and bad in the Jews and gentiles (I loved the role of Pilate's wife; I was just talking about her to my brother the other day!), humanity put Jesus on the Cross.

I also loved it, and really felt the "sword also piercing" the heart of Mary... As Jesus hangs there on the cross, I just wept to say "I'm sorry, Daddy"-- my sins, and unwillingness to do all I can to rout them out has out Him there....

I found the film less violent than I had anticipated-- I didn't feel like it was out of proportion with the other movies out there-- anybody remember the "guts" scene from Platoon, or the fight scenes from Gladiator-- I felt there was enough flash back and attention to other characters that it kept it from being just a portrayal of brutality-- I got the overwhelming message that God loves me so much that He underwent all of this- with only a prayer on His lips-- The God of the Universe love me so much He allowed himself to be so humiliated...

I dunno, I really thought it was incredible!

I saw an interview last night with a Jewish comedian Jackie Mason. He was all angry at Mel yelling "anti-semitism" this and that, he was completley against the movie. In the last moments of the interview he pipes up and says loud and clear: "The Jews are not responsible for the death of Jesus! God ordained His death to atone for the sins of humanity!!! He died for all of us!!!" I was in shock, I was like "What? did he just say what I think he said?" I turned to my kids and said "uhhhh....did that guy just get "saved"? My kids laughed pretty hard at that. I mean I couldn't believe he admitted on national television that Jesus died for the sins of humanity as ordained by God! Jackie Mason as far as I know is not a Messianic Jew. Maybe he will be now!

Um...maybe he went senile?

I dunno but I DO know I jumped off the couch and clapped when he said that! I wanted to cry, I couldn't believe he said that! I wonder if any Jews were out there saying "WHAT?! Jackie what are you saying up there?!"

The problem is, people see building blow up and people get shot up and are still walking like nothing happened to them, like it didn't affect them. This film shows that (GASP!) you get beaten, you might BLEED!!!

Yes, I think Mary's suffering at the foot of the Cross was a great testimony as how we must carry our cross and fill in our flesh what is "lacking" in the passion and suffering of Christ Jesus. WOW! Mary Magdalene, John... wow as well! I was most moved by the flashbacks of Mary and Jesus (Jesus building that "high table" that Mary said would never "catch on" -- and especially when Mary remembers running toward the little child Jesus who stumbled and fell on the ground...)

It really portrayed to me Mary as the pre- emminent disciple-- the perfect model of how we are to love Jesus...

I found myself wishing Mel would make an "Acts" movie, so to speak- so we could see Peter being forgiven, and see the keys of the Kingdom being handed on, and well, there's just so much there!! (I know all that isn't in Acts, but you get my ;) )

The author of "A Doctor at Calvary" says as much, without saying it. Our Lord could have died at any point in that brutal journey, just from heart failure, loss of blood or extreme shock.

Why did He survive? I think it was because it was God's plan that we see that He took the FULL penalty for our sins and poured out His Divine Love in a way that any person could see was absolute and limitless. Some theologians have speculated that perhaps even the blood from the circumcision might have been sufficient. Aquinas: cuius una stilla solvem facere totum mundum quit ab omni scelere: a drop of His blood was sufficient to cleanse the whole world (my paraphrase). So why let all this happen?

Because, I think, it is a perfect manifestation of His infinite kenosis, the pouring out of His Love. It's a way of saying that there is no limit to His Love.

Hi Lotar,

It looks as if this movie is baring an unexpected fruit. It seems to be separating the tares from the wheat.

I can't stand the thought of this anymore, I just wish Jesus were standing before me right now so I could hug Him and tell Him how sorry I am for what He endured for me. I know I can tell Him but I want to hug Him!

I thought of something else that really tore me up, when Veronica was handing Him the water and poor beaten up Jesus went to reach for it, looking so thirsty and thankful to get a drink and the guy kicked it out of her hand before He got any!  I cried so hard right then! My poor Jesus...
