Man created before the animals, or animals created before man?

Man created after the animals.

Gen 1:25-27 God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Seems like a contradiction to me.

Indeed -- and when you keep reading the second account, it's not a very good commentary on God's alleged omniscience.

Not a contradiction--I said, Gen. 1 is creation week in chronological order, Gen 2 is filling in the details, but not in order.

So you're claiming that, in Gen. 2:

1. God creates man,
2. God declares that man should not be alone,
3. God creates the animals to find a help meet for man,
4. The animals are a bust, so God creates woman...

... but not necessarily in that order?

Tell you what -- you put those events in whatever order you need to in order to reconcile it... we'll wait.
