i signed up but can't honestly bring myself to tweet.
I'm pretty much the same. I signed up and was bored with it within 2 minutes. I just don't see the glamour in telling people everything you're doing, or why they would even care, cause I know I don't care what others are doing.

The key to Twitter, IMHO, is to tailor it to suit your needs. If you look at it exclusively as a vehicle for people to make inane comments, it will indeed seem useless.

I know I initially quit after a day.

But I have come to serve an important part of my daily walk and a HUGE instrument of my faith. There is a vibrant christian community, and Twitter is a bona fide ministry tool.

Then you have the business benefits. There is a reason why every major corporation has a Twitter feed (or two). For individuals, it is priceless. When I have issues with any company, my first step is to see if they have a Twitter account. Why? The best and brightest from these companies usually man these accounts, and they are eager to please. Case in point, after a coupon code for tax prep didn't work, I tried calling the company in question thrice. Couldn't get it resolved (understandable, right? After all, it was ta season). I discovered they had a Twitter account. One tweet later, and I was blessed with a courtesy free preparation for this year AND next.

So, how do you maximize Twitter? I would tell believers to watch who they are yoked with. I like the fact that I can tweet that I need a quick prayer, and 300-some people will stop what they are doing to help. I like that I have a daily source of inspirational material, and an avenue to discuss serious matters. Type a term in search.twitter.com; see who shares your interests. As a soccer coach, I have tweeted for help with formulating a soccer drill after being stumped on the field.

So, again, it is what you make of it; it isn't for everybody, and I am not trying to convince anyone of the urgent need to adopt it, but it can be very, very useful.

:)

I use twitter every single day because I'm in Marketing and PR. I learn the news in my industry and chat with other "pros". Of course some people take it too far (ahem Ashton Kutcher) and think they're fabulous based on how many "followers" they have. When I don't find Twitter useful to me, I won't use it anymore, but right now I am learning cool things. Also, when news breaks it's almost always on twitter first--- but not always is correct!

BTW, I'm @meggiepoo on twitter. Meghan (meggiepoo) on Twitter

I have a dumb question: How will I know if someone responds to my post... if I navagate away from the page? Sorry... newbie.

Not dumb at all! You can only do that if you choose to Advanced Reply or Quote and then you'll get additional options and you can choose to be notified. There may actually be other ways, but these are the only ways I know of right now.

Another way to do it is to click your username in the top right corner, then 'Statistics,' then 'Find all threads started by (your username)' and it will show you if there have been any replies.

Regarding Twitter it's amazing how quickly it's come into wide use. It seems like it is now the preferred method for companies and celebrities to make announcements. I don't personally have one - I'm with many of you who don't see the need to electronically update my friends on everything I am doing - but I definitely see the advantages in keeping a large group informed. Like Facebook it will be interesting to see how it gets woven into everything else in the next couple of years.

Twitter is not just for telling what you are doing at the moment. I find people who do that boring. It is a good place to ask questions and get answers, to search for like minded people and experience community in real time. I also post snippets of information such as online links, funny things, news items, etc.
I am also on Identi.ca. I have a Facebook & Myspace accounts, but gave up on them due to all of the nuisance people wanting to link up with me.
i have several identities for different online personas. One for Christian and social issues, one for technology and one for personal use.
I am also on Googlewave.
On Twitter & Ideneti.ca I am LinuxCanuck
On Twitter I am RadiclChristian and on Identi.ca RadicalChristian.
I have thousands of tweets/ dents and have hundreds of followers. I read lots of online information and keep a client open that allows me to write to multiple accounts and on both services.

Twitter is kind of an interesting thing. The only problem I have with it is the lack of identity verification, this is the same problem with Facebook. Anyone can create a "Barack Obama" twitter account, which is pretty cool in and of itself. I like the anonymity of the internet and I don't think that should change.

But I'm working for a company that is providing a communication system for public safety agencies and citizens that is totally identity verified. It's quite interesting. It's going to be the Twitter of the future, it's called Nixle. It's an information exchange powered by geography.
