  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hi these are 12x16 acrylics painted from recent photos taken in my cul-de-sac. I though the center cloud in the first one looked like a galaxy. The first was on a wood panel and the second on canvas.

Really enjoy the clouds in these. And the lighter area on either side of the road in the second really frames the roadway.

Your first one matches up better with the atmosphere of twilight the second one the ground is lit to much. If what you mean by twilight, is that the sun is no longer visible in the sky.

These are resampled considerably so it is tough to make out all the features. I took that to be snow, which would be highly reflective, accounting for the light.

However, if that is the case I would expect it to pick up a bit more of the red and yellow color as well. There are some yellow highlights.

Again i am just looking at these over a computer, so i am not sure how true these are to the actual painting. But he was faced with a challenging problem in the second one. Being that there were two opposite contrast next to each other. The white of the snow and the dark of the paved road.

If they are painted as they are seen in the photo most of the time that will not work out, there is two much contrast between the two. So the light will need to be pushed toward a darker value and the dark will also need to be pushed to a lighted value.

It is a very fine give an take to arrive at a proper balance between the atmosphere to give the illusion of lit darkness.

I have seen such done, especially with toning down brights.

However, in this case I am not sure it is too bright. I would just expect it to match more of the coloration of the sky if it is reflecting it.

Thanks guys. I attached the references. I did make some changes. I had more highlights in the wet pavement but removed those. I also exaggerated the snow to bump up contrast. I didnt do any of the details in the neighbors houses.

I don't think upping the contrast slightly was a problem. But since the reflected light on the snow was from the upper part of the sunset, in lightening it you may have thrown off the color.

The key to getting the right atmosphere is starting with the main large mass areas. The sky and the road get the sky keyed and the road keyed to the right color value. Then on the ground key every mass using the road to judge by. The trick of the ground is the value range will be real close to each other.

This Vermeer is a fine example of white in shadow. The tiles in the shadow look at how far he pushed the value. But they still read as white tile.
