Hmm, I really do not know. I wouldn't be surprised if it differed from period to period but I seem to recollect something along the lines of it only being acceptable for a man of the upper class to be the 'top,' so it would not be possible for two men of the same rank to have a relationship without the one who was the 'bottom' to lose a lot of face.
Well, between *men*--that is, grown men--very likely. But a boy--even a teenaged boy of the same social class--is of a lower rank than the adult man within that class. There is also some evidence that the majority of these relationships did not include anal sex (some likely didn't include sex at all), so the boy of the same class was likely not been penetrated (which, yes, would have been seen as feminizing--but if it happened it was less stigmatizing for a young man than a fully grown one). Apparently these relationships were socially beneficial to the younger partner for the mentoring and social connections aspect.
