  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I had to use it for a freshman composition class... I really don't like it. It's just to scan your work to see if it was plagiarized, one paper I did it said it was 50% plagiarism, which it definitely was not, it just caught a bunch of phrases that were probably common, because the topic I chose was a very common one (Gun Control), and if you eventually want to turn in the same essay to a different teacher in the future, and they have you use turnitin.com too, then it will come out 100% plagiarism. Kinda funny really. The site is pretty easy to use, but I really think it's a lame thing for the teacher to make you use it, it's basically the teacher saying he doesn't trust his students.

I had to use it for reading and critical thinking english class. I thought it was okay. my teacher told us if we didn't turn it in to that site by this weekend we'd get a zero for the assignment. I was so mad because I thought I turned it in and I didn't. I hope he doesn't give me a zero because I worked hard on it. I submitted it today and emailed him about the situation

yeah, my teacher was like that too, but we had to turn in a paper copy as well as online to get full credit, and we had to have a slip of paper signed from the writing center saying they helped us on out paper for each essay for full points also... it was so annoying.
Good luck with your teacher, I hope he'll except your paper for full points.

I had a Shakespeare class last semester where using turnitin.com was required. While I liked the convenience of not having to submit a paper copy, I think the lack of trust that shows in students to be rather insulting.

You're not supposed to use the same paper for multiple classes. You have to get permission from BOTH teachers to do that. Otherwise, it's plagiarism. Stupid, I know. I learned this the hard way my freshman year of college.

I have to use it for my American Government class, and also my Freshman English class. (I think there might be one more I'm supposed to use it for as well.... but can't remember haven't had to yet.)

I don't mind the fact that the teacher has us use it, but I got mad at the teacher. I asked my Government teacher how I was supposed to sign up for an account, because I couldn't find in the syllabus the class key or password anywhere. She made me feel like a complete idiot for even asking when she told me it was in a module on our school e-mail site. She could've told me that without making me feel like I was stupid and that it was something a 1st grader could figure out!

Technically you wrote the paper, so it's yours. So you should be able to turn it in in the future to a different teacher. Usually you would have to edit it a bit to fit in with the other class though.
But that is not plagiarism... unless perhaps the first teacher you turned it in to claims the copy right... then it could be considered plagiarism.
My history teacher and many of my other teacher's I've had, have encouraged us to write a paper that could be used again.
It probably depends on the school policy... and the teachers them selves... it seems teachers can make whatever rules they want even if they are not really fair, or logical.

If i was going to reuse a paper though, I might ask my teacher about it... actually I did ask one time that I remember.

"Redundant publication has a direct counterpart in the area of academic dishonesty- it is referred to as ‘double dipping’. It occurs when a student submits a whole paper or a substantial portion of a paper to fulfill a course requirement, even though that paper had earlier been submitted to satisfy the requirements for another course taught by a different professor. Many college undergraduates and even some graduate students are not aware that this type of practice is a serious offense and constitutes plagiarism. Of course, as in redundant publication, submitting the same paper, or a large portion of a paper, to two different courses is entirely acceptable if the instructors of both courses were informed by the student of the double submission, and if both agreed to the arrangement. However, some institutions have specific policies prohibiting this practice."

See! It's true!

o_O I have never heard of this. What about using quotes in your paper as support, will turnitin.com count that as plagarism if it is cited properly?

I believe that it misreads it... but I think my teacher told us that it shouldn't catch it if it's properly quoted....

Yes, I have used turnitin.com for freshman "academic" writing classes. I had no problems, but the site is controversial. On the flip side, in one of my writing classes, I was peer editing someone's essay, and I IMMEDIATELY recognized that the essay was taken off the internet, and very sloppily cut, pasted, and edited. After the course instructor left, I asked the girl, "You know we use turnitin.com, right?" She said she did, and the reason why she stole it off the internet as her rough draft was because she did not have time to do all her school work, and go to her job and attend school. She told me that she planned to write it later on, and submit that to turnitin.com as her "final draft".

I've never used it. Then again, I'm a chemical engineer, and I SAT IIed out of freshman comp.

And about the feeling insulted for a lack of trust: It is a lack of trust. There are sites out there you can just buy essays from. There are plagiarizers. And the teachers have no idea who they are until AFTER the papers are turned in. Even if only a few people do it, people are still doing it and because of that everyone must be checked.

Does any have to use turnitin.com for their papers? Or have you used it? For what classes?
I've never had to use it. I go to a technology school and I have yet to meet a teacher that doesn't see the serious flaws the program has.

Ken, one of the university instructors, had a student submit a plagiarized game doc for a Game Design 101 class final. He was reading it and wondering why it sounded so familiar...then he realized that it was a game that he had worked on.

That student will never get a job in the game production industry -- he violated one of the greatest taboos of the industry.
