Depends on which Church - the Copts (and I think Ethiopians?) have a tradition of tattoos, but they are a specific one for a certain reason. Honestly I don't know that I'd get any more after having become Orthodox, but I've never read a good Christian argument against them. (Our priest doesn't like them either, Gurney, but you probably could've guessed that).

3/4 Sleeves is basically a 'sleeve' of tattoos. A full sleeve is having one's arm completely covered from the shoulder to the wrist. A 3/4 would end somewhere near the middle of the forearm.

Now I'm picturing Big Fudge looking like Alan Iverson! LOL!

With the exception of a few not so "in your face" tats, I can't imagine some of these girls covered with tats and their husbands equally covered, wanting to become priests and propadias. Boy, that will be a weird phenomenon for a parish....Imagine our Protenica covered in weird tats on her feet, arms, neck, behind her ear, etc. Eckkk...If that were the case, I'd go Greek down the street! ^_^

Don't judge a book by its cover...;)

Yes, I know Turbo. Great guy. Very talented iconographer.

Yeah our priest had mentioned that. People don't realize tattooing can be a very difficult art form (skin being a tricky medium) so the people who can do it well are always very skilled artists.

Tattooing images on people isn't iconography...

I don't think anyone said it is. I've always heard having icons tattooed is taboo, anyway.

If he's good at painting real icons, then cool, good for him. But tattooing is not iconography.

He paints actual Icons. Whether he tattoos them onto people I don't know, though I'd probably question the appropriateness of that.

It is as appropriate as wearing a shirt with an icon on it or an icon bracelet.

I.E., not.

But I guess that thinking can be taken to include nose piercings with chains, mohawks, purple beards, tattoos on the face, and all sorts of other nonsense. I think a cover can often say a lot! LOL...with the exception of the Beatles White Album! :p

All I can say is, I'm not down with this stuff. I find it terribly distasteful, worldly, and unecessary as well as desecrating one's flesh. I would feel quite uncomfortable seeing a priest or propadia covered with tats making them look like a Marvel comic book...

Our old priest had a tattoo, as well as his sons and some monks I met. I've also known Egyptian Orthodox believers (many of whom went to our church) with tattoos, some on their face, some just on their hand.

In the grand scheme of things, I don't think tats are necessarily good or bad...

Then you should go to the retreat and hear what he has to say.

You asked if anyone knows him - I do and will vouch for him.

For those eager to jump on the condemnation bandwagon...if you don't know the guy then you probably shouldn't have an opinion about him.

To each his own. I don't like 'em and I'm glad my priest is old school. What's scary to me is the day that I turn into an old man and my priest is one of these kids who grew up in the 1990's onward....hopefully I'll take a dirt nap early enough to not have them preach to me! ^_^

Right there with you, Seraphim!

Yeah, so I spent the 90's going to elementary school, watching Hey Arnold, The Wild Thornberrys, Rugrats, Boy Meets World and playing with pogs, pok-e-mon cards, and reading Harry Potter. I currently have 2 tattoos and have hopes/plans to attend St. Vlad's in a few years...

[/nostalgia] lol

I'm not on a condemnation bandwagon and I don't hear anyone else in here condemning, Kristos, so that's a touch dramatic. I think sometimes, as Rus reminds us, we need to look at our language. "Condemn" is a pretty strong term. I said I don't like tattoos. I have the right to feel that way. My wife finds them low class and icky. I find them ugly, distracting, and primitive. I think back to when I was a kid growing up, the good old days, and the only people you saw with DC comics up and down their arms were Hell's Angels. Marines had them, but it was a badge of honor earned in a tough way. Same with Navy and Army. But even my dad said that, under pressure during Vietnam, he almost got a tat and said, "you know what, this is stupid, I'm not messing up my arms with pictures. no way, I'm outta here." My family doesn't like 'em, period.

That is not condemnation. I don't know this Turbo guy. I probably won't go because, the more I read of him, he doesn't seem really qualified to speak on Lenten issues in a really deep way that a priest, monk, or bishop could speak to. I'm not interested in hearing about his body art or his artistic insights. That just doesn't speak to me. That being said, do I "condemn" a guy with tattoos to the bowels of hell and think they're spiritual riff-raff with no hope of salvation, judged by Gurney the All-Knowing? Nope. I'm glad the guy converted and found Holy Orthodoxy. And I'm glad any tattood person finds Christ. But as for my personal feeling toward tattoos, I can't stand 'em. Nothing to do with salvation, which is the essence of condemnation, just a preference.

Then you should go to the retreat and hear what he has to say.

You asked if anyone knows him - I do and will vouch for him.

And that's exactly what I'm saying! LOL...Rugrats? Hey Arnold? You poor kids growing up in the 90's don't even know good entertainment, man! I remember teaching in the 1990's and kids brought those Pokemon cards to school. LOL....cartoon-wise, TV-wise, movie-wise, and socially speaking, you guys grew up in the Dark Ages!

Scooby Doo, Voltron, Transformers, Thundercats, He-Man, G.I. Joe could eat 'em all for lunch! ^_^:sorry:

"You Can't Do That on Television" on Nickelodian after school...now that was entertainment.

Hey, don't mention Rugrats and then accuse others of being inane! LOL...

Oh geeze. Having reached my level of inanity for the day, forgive me if I back out of the rest of this thread lol.

I'll let you all know how the retreat goes (Provided I can go, with a new baby in town).
