My car gets 352,000 rods to the hogshead and can do it in under 0.07142857 fortnights and that is just fine with me.

So I've been trying to figure it out and I can't. How can a system of measurement possibly be creepy?

Maybe Carlson had a really traumatic experience involving the number ten somehow in his childhood. Who knows? It made no sense.

Apparently the heir to the Swanson foods empire, is squeamish about “the origins” of the system, I guess imagining the idea popping into the head of its inventor whilst viewing the guillotine at its gruesome task of ridding France of the Aristocracy.

I wish I were surprised.

(I also wish I could figure out the metric system, but it's been much harder to wrap my head around than Celsius was.)
I figured out that 10 cm is about 4 inches and a meter is the yard plus the length of my forefinger. All those physics and chem classes and metric still only makes sense in relation to the old system :sigh:

We use American* guns, not them Israeli Miltary Industry guns with their Noah measurements.

* Many of our small arms and our main 105mm howitzer are made by foreign countries.

Really? I see a tariff opportunity!

Neither is the system we use. No feet, pounds or ounces.

BTW how many people here know how many teaspoons there are in a cup? How many square feet in an acre? Or even the easy one how many feet in a mile?
I will answer then check myself

Or even the easy one how many feet in a mile?

We Americans love our traditions. Even when they're outdated. For many of us, it will be difficult to conceptualize a house on a 0.607 hectare lot (1.5 acres.) Or a car with a 223.7 kilowatt engine (300 hp.)

And it just won't sound right when your team has to move the ball 9.14 meters for a 1st down. And midfield is the 45.72 meter line.

McDonald's will hunt you down if you force them to rename their Quarter pounder (though in France it is the Royale with Cheese -- but not in the rest of Europe). ;)

In Aussie rules when we went metric we moved the 50 year line to the 50 metre line. Easy, peasy. Having said, that, our players have enough nouse that they don't need to play on a numbered grid.

Since my memory can play tricks on me I checked before sharing this anecdote.

I think my first McDonald's experience in Europe was in Vienna and I recall the Quarter Pounder was named that, just in German. Viertelpfünder mit Käse. That was in the early 80s. At some point after we came back to the States they renamed it the Hamburger Royal Käse.
Hamburger Royal TS – Wikipedia
McDonald's - Alle Produkte

The version of the "Quarter Pounder" available at McDonald's in English-speaking countries was initially distributed in German-speaking countries under the name "Viertelpfünder". In the 80s he was renamed "Hamburger Royal".

The German Wikipedia link is actually for the Hamburger Royal TS which is a Quarter Pounder without pickles and with lettuce and two tomato slices or, as we knew it back in the 80s, a McDLT.
