Trump is a liar. Taiwan did not steal US chip semiconductor manufacturing, the US allowed it to happen as part of geopolitical strategy. Decades ago, the US helped set up Taiwan as an industrial and economic counterweight to mainland China.

Taiwan is a long term ally of the United States, and as usual Trump has no problem insulting allies.

Should Trump not do this deal then? A deal with national security ramifications?

Since Biden's term they have been talking about needing to onshore more semiconductors so that US industry isn't blindsided again like during the pandemic. This is hardly something Trump just cooked up out of nowhere, it's been planned for a long time.

Yet he's the one to deftly execute it. But I'm sure you're right. I'm sure Biden would have gotten this deal done had he been allowed to stay in office for two extra months. HAHAHAHA

I suspect it's a good move for TSMC too, or else they simply wouldn't agree to any kind of deal, but it might contain a bitter truth. Now it means American wages and working conditions are as low as Taiwan's.

Nah. America has standards. Employees will be treated right. It's not like they're digging ditches here, this is state of the art, high-tech equipment that's being used. The work environment will be above average.

As insults go, this was quite silent. It seems more like a backroom deal.

Right now, Taiwan has enormous advantages over other chip manufacturers in terms of quality, location, and workforce, and this has given it a near monopoly on high-end chip manufacture. This is not something that even an investment as large as $100 billion is going to change overnight and there were solid commercial reasons for outsourcing to them as well as geopolitical ones. Strategic overdependencies should always be eliminated. In the meantime, developments in quantum computing or, indeed, more efficient leverage of low-end chips may overthrow the significance of this monopoly in time in military and commercial sectors.

The importance of Taiwan is not just about chips it is also about the traderoutes that pass the island on the way too and from Japan. They need another industry just in case chips go south.

What are you talking about? Are you unfamiliar with the CHIPS and Science Act?

TSMC has already been investing (or committing to invest) billions of dollars in the US. This extra $100 billion isn't entirely new; it's on top of what they've already been doing.
