• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Well I have been smoking since I was 19 and I am now 24.

My girlfriend doesnt smoke, wants me to quit, and is always worried about my health because she is a nurse and works in ICU.

I usually smoke 1 pack a day, but had a very stressful project at work and bumped up to 2 packs a day. Yuck, even grosses me out thinking about it.

Well I slapped the patch on last Wed., didnt like the way it made me feel so am going cold turkey. I have been having cravings, had 4 cigarettes today, but I still feel I have done good.

I feel good, I always exercised frequently and lifted weights, so I think I am in pretty good shape.

Over the past few days I have had a tense throat/neck, hot flashes, sweats, etc. The tense throat makes me very nervous, but Im assuming that the withdrawal is making it worse.

Aside from being tired and the other symptoms I can jog a good distance, lift weights, and I dont feel totally out of breath.

I know I need to quit, I want to quit, for myself and for my girlfriend as well.

Any advice guys? Your prayers and advice will be more than welcome.

Thank you.

I quit smoking with the help of smokeless tobacco. It hated doing it so I would only do it when I really needed some nicotine. Also, the nicotine slowly absorbs through your system so it's less addictive than going straight to your lungs. Not something you want to do very long, it's pretty gross. But it sure made me quit within a few weeks.

Prayer works the best though. I tried on my own for a few years off and on. Then I gave the problem to God to fix and things seemed to work out within a month or so.

You can do it. I smoked for 19 years (I started at about 16) and quit 7 days after my 35th birthday...cold turkey. It will be 8 months in July. The first couple of weeks are the hardest, but it gets easier with every day that passes.

Keep on track!
