Can someone explain to me why so many people try to date the end of times? It seems to me that concentrating so much time on that is ignoring the greater purpose of God's instructions to us.

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit..."

Claiming to know the date of Christ's return is foolish. It also detracts from a person's ministry. People already criticize Christians because of our legitimate practices. They call us crazy for living a life of love and service. How many potential believers does a person scare off when he or she starts spouting off timelines for when the world will end?

To all who believe, I add this: The Gospel is not about the future. It is about the here and now. Love in the present. Serve in the present. Believe in the present. Your reward will come in the future, but only God knows when that time will be.

It's normal to wonder on such things. Even the disciples were curious.

Mat 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Of course it is, but there is a difference between contemplating when it happens and proclaiming to all who will listen a date and time. Unfortunately, I know so many Christians that proclaim they know when Christ will return. People have been saying we're living in the end of times for almost two millennia. When will Christians learn? We can't ignore the present because we think the end is near. We have an obligation to spread the Word now.

Will anyone learn? When the Word is lived, abided in, spoken, shared, daily, who listens? Those who think they will be taken away without suffering, ? no. They seem to sit on their hands, and will suffer later from what Jesus says (woe to those who are comfortable now, for they have received their comfort; blessed are those who suffer now, for they will be comforted) ....

People gain notoriety and money when they predict events, write books or have speaking engagements relayed to the end of time. Nobody knows when Christ will return or the order of events. I am curious about world events but would not venture a guess as to what year Christ will return.

It bothers me how much of a following they gain. Usually, they are intelligent and charismatic. They could use those talents in such positive ways.

I wish I could say that I have mastered anything, but I cannot. Thank you, though, for your kind reply.

I would say it is a skill to study eschatology and not come up with a date.

It keeps people on their toes. Since we do not know the day nor hour, when date setters are wrong, we go Ahhh haa you were wrong, Next! I think they have their place in the large plan of God.

You could be right that they have a place in God's plan. Interesting point of view!

Jesus came according to the scriptures and showed the two disciples on the road everything that pertained to Him that was written. The end of the age will be very similar and the prophecies will be all fulfilled. In the 70's the Jesus people revival had an emphasis on the last days. They believed God's word to be true so the promises of the 2nd coming and all are just as true as all the Bible promises. One thing is sure those guys like J Vernon McGee and Billy Graham thought the world could not get any worse than it was for J Vernon 1988 was as bad as the days of Noah and we are quantum leaps more wicked than then. So were those men wrong about teaching the judgment is coming and the tribulation and all? No. They did not set dates and we can see like Jeremiah who was a young man when he started and an old man when it came to pass the judgments that he warned of. It these prophecies fail than how assured can you be of the rest of it?

Sure.

  • *Because they are sinful and disobedient and endeavor to act contrary to fact none one will know the day or hour.
  • Because they do not know how to properly exegete scripture and do not realize the statement about no one knowing the day or occurs within the context of "this generation," the first century generation of Jesus' first century audience.
  • Because there are enormous amounts of money to be made selling tomes on prognostication.
  • Because there is no accountability among false prognosticators or those who buy their schtick.
  • Because some folks like drama.
.
It seems to me that concentrating so much time on that is ignoring the greater purpose of God's instructions to us.

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit..."
Amen! Amen! and Amen! Big fat firm hugs, Thomas.

"Be fruitful, multiply, subdue the earth and rule over it."

Kinda hard to do when it's going to hell in a handbasket any day now (supposedly by God's command ).

All scripture is inspired by God and we are told in scripture to rightly divide the word of truth and this includes prophecy. We should study the book from cover to cover.

Yes, and when we do so we will find what I posted is correct.

If that text to which you allude is 2 Tim. 3:16 then that passage also states quite plainly the scriptures are for making the man of God complete and fully equipped for good works.

It is not a good work to continuously make false prognostications. It is not a good work to profit off doing so. It is not a good work not to be held accountable for doing so. It is not a good work to abuse the inspired word of God in order to make false prognostications, profit off them, and never be held accountable.

Prophecy is for Believers 1 Corinthians 14:22b

The Bible has plenty of information on how the Lord’s plans have been fulfilled in the past and what we can expect in our future. Also, according to His plan, very few will truly understand the full scope and implications of future events. Daniel 12:10 Some reasons for this are:

1/ Those who may profess to be Christian, but in their hearts are not:

1 John 4:4-6 Believers in Christ, you belong in God’s family and you can discern false prophets because the God who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. The world listens to the teachings of worldly people, but we belong to God and whoever knows God pays heed to the truth, those who are not His people cannot comprehend the prophetic message.

Isaiah 29:13-14 The Lord says: Because this people worship Me with empty words and pay Me lip service, while their hearts are far from Me and their religion is but human precepts, learnt by rote; therefore I shall shock them and shock again and their wisdom and discernment will be lost. Matthew 7:21-23

2/ Belief in false teaching, leading to a fixed mindset of wrong ideas: Ezekiel 14:3-5

The prime example of a false teaching is the pre-tribulation rapture. This idea denies many Scriptures that say; all will be tested, 1 Peter 4:12, Luke 21:35. This leads to a careless attitude toward prophecy. If you believe you are good enough and sufficiently holy to be taken directly to heaven, then you will be judged for judging yourself. Humility and trust in the Lord’s saving grace, Isaiah 30:15, must be our attitude, not the pretentious belief of a removal from the earth to avoid any perceived difficulties. In John 17:15 Jesus asks for protection, not removal and in John 3:13 No one will go to heaven, only He who came from it.

2 Peter 2:1-3 In the past, there were false prophets among the people, just as now you will have false teachers. They will promote their theories and speculations, twisting Scripture to suit their fanciful notions. Many will follow their sheer fabrications and credulous people will make them rich and famous, but judgement waits for them: a long prepared destruction will fall upon their heads.

Jeremiah 23:16-17 The Lord says: Do not listen to your false prophets, who give you false hope and voice their own fancies, it is not the Lord’s Words they speak. They say: ‘prosperity will be yours’ and to all who follow their devious beliefs: ‘No harm will befall you’.

Isaiah 29:9-12 The Lord says: I will place My spirit of mis-understanding upon all those who are ‘drunk, but not with wine’ [that is: who allow themselves to be fooled by false teachings], so it becomes impossible for them to see the truth. Isaiah 8:16

3/ Preterism and non-literal interpretation:

To think that all prophecies have been fulfilled or they are just metaphors and allegories, is a serious error that leaves those who believe that way, without proper knowledge or understanding about the end times.

2 Peter 1:19 We confirm the message of the prophets, to which you will do well to study; it will enlighten your minds, like a lamp shining into a dark place.

4/ Denial or straight out refusal to try to comprehend the prophesies:

Ezekiel 33:31-33 My people will listen to the prophets, but they will not take any action. Fine Words, they will say but with insincerity, for their hearts are set on selfish gain. When disaster strikes, as it will, then they will know the truth of prophecy.

Isaiah 48:3-6 Long ago, I announced what will happen, but because of your stubbornness and your refusal to accept instruction, you think everything can be explained by chance or by natural occurrence. You read the Word, consider it well and admit the truth of it.

Hosea 9:7 The Day of punishment and vengeance comes and all Israel will know it. Their prophets are fools and their wise leaders are like madmen, because they are all deep in enmity with God and He will remember their guilt.

Revelation 22:7b…Happy is the person who takes to heart the Words of prophecy in this Book.

Straw man. Preterism does not hold all prophecies have been fulfilled. Mainstream Preterism fully expects a final coming of Christ and all the prophesies associated with that event. To suggest otherwise is falsehood and to argue against that falsehood is a straw man. Full Preterism argues there is nothing left to be fulfilled but that is a minority view, even among preterists.

And Peter was writing to a first century readership. The "we" of verse 19 is the first century apostles. It is not the "we" of 21st century Christians. The "you" of verse 19 is "you Christians living in the first century who are reading my letter as its original readers." The "you" is not "you Christians 2000 or more years from now." To interpret this otherwise is to make the text meaningless for those to whom it was originally written! One of the most basic rules to understanding scripture is to understand the text as the original author understood and intended and as the original readers would have understood it.

So one straw man and one abuse of scripture.

I think this where there is fallacy in our thinking. Most people, myself included, think the world is worse now than it ever has been. Yet, God flooded the world and destroyed a city at two different points because of the evil. When you look at it from that perspective, we aren't doing too shabby.

There is a layer of wisdom that is the bedrock of the treasure hidden in the field. This layer is all about time for those who are on a journey. By the time God draws someone into this journey they already trust Him for The Who,What, and Why. When you're searching for "when" then the parables and riddles can only be discovered on your own. You can't get group consensus.
