• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Greetings,

When it comes to OCD, it's so difficult to discern what's God's will versus what's an obsessive thought.

Just now, I've been trying to figure out whether God just spoke to me recently or whether it's my OCD putting falsehoods into my mind.

I hesitate to ask for God's confirmation through a "sign" because I know it's wrong to do and I fear that I'll be condemned. Plus, that's one of my compulsions.

But at the same time, I really want an answer to something that I'm obsesssing about. I really want to know God's voice. What should I do?

wanting an answer from God is ok. He wants us to ask questions about things we don't know abour or aren't sure about. But at the same time He wants us to know Him well enough that we feel safe in trusting Him to give us an answer.
and that's where the OCD comes in.

The OCD concentrates on the question itself and makes that the center of our attention. So we think instead about when we'll get an answer-if we get an answer-should we get an answer, will we recognize the answer, etc.

Doing that means that we're still holding on to the question, and our focus is really upon how important the question itself is. By doing that we shut off our focus on getting an answer or hearing from God, because all we can do is to think about ourselves asking the question. When that happens our thoughts become a closed loop of OCD for which there is no outlet--and no place for a thought of getting the answer to our question.

the answer instead is to think of God and focus all our attention on Him.
Think about His goodness, think about His mercy, think about how He provides for us every day. Think about how creative He is, Think about all He knows. And somewhere in there is the answer to your question.:) turning your focus on Him allows you to hear when He speaks to you.
