Usually there is little difference between truth and fact when closely examined. Here I present what I consider to be an example of the difference.

It is a fact that immigrants seek a better life in America because of problems in their native lands.

It is the truth that they should stay and work to solve those problems in their native lands.

Note that the truth statement contains a moral element.

I think you're confusing truth with opinion - or perhaps you feel truth is a personal matter, and everyone has their own version. I can see what Richard Rorty meant by, "Truth is simply a compliment paid to sentences seen to be paying their way"; whatever passes the validation procedures of your culture or society (perhaps even your personal opinion).

Some moral relativism in there too; "let the powerless and oppressed sort it out for themselves". That needs some nifty footwork to sound like a moral truth...

The true powerless and oppressed are the ones abandoned in South America by their uncaring neighbors as they rush off to a "better life" in the US. The people who illegally make their way into my country are not powerless. They are very capable.

Then you would be incorrect. I started learning about different number bases in 6th grade. I would presume with how important they are to computing they start even earlier these days.

The truth concerning this subject is.......(drumroll please).........not 1 person in 10 knows what you are talking about.

I made up that figure, but I'll bet on it, in fact I'm going to ask 10 random graduate students (my tenants) if they know what "base 3" is. If they do know I'll ask them what 2+2 equals. I'll get back to you, with an honest report.

I'll add that to my informal poll: "What is the most common nomenclatura of math?" I'm going out on a limb and guess that not 1 in 50 even understands the question.
