  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm curious of people's thoughts.

When you compare Trump to past presidents, what are ways that he behaves and speaks that are similar to them and what ways are different?

Less interested in "who is better" just starting with "same and different".

Any thoughts to share?

It's difficult to judge and compare when we're in the midst of it. What is current will always be most apparent and the memory of what/who went before fades.

That said, I have never experienced a previous president who so blatantly lied, viciously disparaged Americans and engaged in open corruption. Most presidents try to put on a good public face of caring about laws whatever they do behind closed doors.

He is different from all the other presidents in my lifetime. I was born in Truman's term but the first president i have any memories of is Eisenhower. Does he have any virtue any of the others lacked?
Might as well ask if he has any virtues.
He might be able to scarf down a half dozen big MACs and diet cokes more quickly. Would that count?

Trump is by far the most corrupt president. and likely the most cowardly. he's a fan of Jackson, but if Jackson were alive today he would absolutely beats the bricks off Trump for being sniveling.

I would say his only decent qualities are a form of populost chrisma, somewhat similar to jackson. he's in the bottom five-dead last in pretty much every other attribute of a president. he will end up in the bottom 3 in history in the long run.

I've known 14 presidents. Seven of them Republican. They were all, at some time, what you might call presidential. They each had their moments. Every single Republican would feel shame in what their party has become. And all because of one man. It's the lowest point for US politics in my lifetime. By a very long way indeed.

He’s at least as good as Warren G Harding.

you know what they say about electing a clown....
Sir, some of my best friends are clowns. And they are, without exception, hard working, honest, morally upright and reputable people. I strongly object to you comparing them to Trump.

This is just going to be the usual daily venting echo chamber.
And here is your opportunity to compare trump to other presidents. If you feel the groaning is unwarranted, I'm sure you'll be able to find comparisons between tru.p and your other favorite presidents.

I would hope that if a poster likes trump they would outlay his attributes that other presidents have had that make him good at his job.

If on the other hand there are no attributes that make him good at his job I'm sure his supporters will indicate that as well.

personally I think Buchanan is the only president that might be worse than trump, and that's due to states literally seceding under his watch.

Trump has been the worst for corruption, one of the worst towards helping his fellow man, both domestic and abroad, he's completely destroyed the US' world reputation, killed hundreds of thousands of americans during a pandemic (and will likely get thousands more killed soon), had masked thugs execute innocent americans in the streets with no punishment.....

the list goes on. it's just been one train wreck after another. it's so bad that many americans, including myself are seeing if we can claim canadian citizenship, because at this rate he's going to drive the whole nation into the ground

I blame liberals for creating a monster. You guys all gushed over Trump until he ran as a Republican, then the vicious lies started happening. Naturally, Trump fights back and is unlike the Republican politicians.

So naturally, today's political speech would be different than those in the past. Even Biden rose up a couple of times, which made him look unstatesmanlike, if this is what it's about?

what? We've been mocking trump for literal decades. He's been a joke and punching bag of the tristate area since I was born.

Who is "you guys"? I vaguely knew about him as a rich guy who liked to name buildings after himself, but otherwise I wasn't paying attention to him. He wasn't important, just rich.

Much different. There used to be etiquette when addressing the public. All politicians lie but Trump takes the prize.

I know my record on this site doesn't go back 11 years to "Golden Escalator Day", but when he declared his run I thought it was a joke. (Like Jimmy James, but less rich or smart.) He was some business guy who'd tried to keep himself in the public eye for 3 decades (when us non-NYers were forced to learn about him) whose businesses must have been failed enough that he stooped to a spot on a reality TV show.

I thought his run was a Democrat plant and the reason I backed Cruz, but ultimately, Trump won out, and I voted party lines. Right after the escalator speech, he was labeled a racist, and the name-calling began.

The media keeps the rich and famous on for ratings, even Oprah asked him on her show. The media keeps him in the public eye, and I personally feel the early media attention is what got him elected in his first term.

That was when he called Mexican immigrants rapists and murderers. You thought he was a joke but then got on board when he started insulting people? That’s a tell.

They’ve certainly benefited from the ratings he’s driven for the past 10 years.
