(Bloomberg) — President Donald Trump’s administration exempted smartphones, computers and other electronics from its so-called reciprocal tariffs, potentially cushioning consumers from sticker shock while benefiting electronics giants including Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. The exclusions, published late Friday by US Customs and Border Protection, narrow the scope of the levies by excluding the products from Trump’s 125% China tariff and his baseline 10% global tariff on nearly all other countries. The exclusions would apply to smartphones, laptop computers, hard drives and computer processors and memory chips. Those popular consumer electronics items generally aren’t made in the US. Setting up domestic manufacturing would take years. --BLOOMBERG

Yes, Trump is exempting those products the US imports from China far more than any other products.
Even more than his Bibles, guitars, watches, and tennis shoes.
These guys are just winging it.

Why is anyone surprised? It's not rocket science; corporations have been running this country for a long time.$
no ones surprised, it's just a joke how quickly trump folds like a cheap suit and has no real convictions. he's all for tariffs till rich start to get upset and treasury bonds are going down, it's all fine to tariff canada untill automakers complaint, "Oh we will make China pay." well not so much that we won't be able to buy most our stuff from them.

I’m not at all surprised Trump got cold feet and is now slowly walking back his big, sweeping tariffs. For all his stubborn bravado, he seems to understand wealthy people losing money isn’t in his best political interests.

Well hey, maybe now my way-overloaded-on-tech portfolio will go back to being just down instead of way, way down.

well I'm now 1000% sure that trump is a stable genius...and by that I mean all the horses have left.

The dollars value is dropping, people are rethinking uising the US dollar as main trading support, countries are looking to trade elsewhere, and I doubt dropping tariffs are going to help long run, maybe short term, but I think most countries are going to start looking elsewhere to trade with because who knows what trump will do next.

Did Trump not notice when China banned the export of certain key rare earths that they have a monopoly on in December 2024? Big Tech companies in Silicon Valley are uniquely vulnerable to a trade war with China and, indeed, Europe.

All the good smartphones are made in Asia, as are most of the personal computers. At least we here in Europe will be able to replace our phones and laptops when they break at affordable prices.

It looks to me as though Apple are screwed even though they tried to shift stuff to Vietnam and India in recent years. China thought this through a decade ago, and Trump and his team are winging it with blue sky visions that have no connection to the realities on the ground. It is a feature of American management generally - let the little people worry about the details until the details come and bite you in the posterior.

Trump aides signal new tariffs on chips, calling exclusion temporary.

""The Trump administration signaled on Sunday that it would pursue new tariffs on the powerful computer chips inside smartphones and other technologies, just two days after it excluded a variety of electronics from the steep import taxes recently applied on goods arriving from China.
The push came as President Trump’s top economic advisers scrambled to explain their shifting strategy, after having insisted for weeks they would shield no company or industry from any of the fees it has levied in a bid to reset U.S. trade relationships.""
Tariffs, exemptions, retractions, yes, no, maybe so.
Next week, next month, with these pack of clowns who knows.

I think it's trump trying to fight against nintendo and sony's dominance once and for all, they've been taking too much from the US gamers.
Phil Spencer finally catches a break.
