It used to be that I'd trust official medical breakthroughs coming from USA.
Now, I'm equally as skeptical as I would be of a breakthrough coming from Russia or China.
A handy guide to the needed level of skepticism on major medical breakthroughs:
* If it is announced after extended studies and proper regulatory testing for safety and effectiveness, it's probably OK. (Since this will probably be connected to a drug company, they are planning to make a boatload of mone from it.)
* If it is a temporary, emergency, or "off label" usage, it probably won't harm you, but don't expect a miracle cure.
* If it's a research study showing an "amazing potential breakthrough" reported in a journal article. Wait. It's not ready for use yet. Perhaps in a decade or so.
* If it's announce by Donald Trump, it could be good, it could be nonsense, it could be dangerous, but it almost certainly is being announced because *he* wants you to credit *him* for saving you. Dig deep and don't trust without evidence coming from non-partisan medical experts.
(Really only the last item is "new".)
