(sorry to hear that and I can understand why... but not all dogs are like that. I stay away though from little dogs which yap and attack, or bigger dogs which are bred to fight. Something like a labrador/retriever/spaniels/setters etc are nice dogs!)

Actually, Dogs mauling 6 month old babies is SICK not people who dislike Dogs.

My neice and a friend of the family were both attacked when they were pre-school age. The friend of the family I knew since utero, had her ear torn off and needed several hundred stiches to sew her face back together. And my neice's head was fully in the dogs mouth and the dog was standing on top of her shaking her head back and forth. These were both pit bulls by the way...a dog that imo should not be domesticated. And you're right, some animals should not be around children. (I don't personally trust any dog with children because of the way their power structure is set up)

People have things that are their hot button issues. And you kind of have to understand that, and try not react as if it was personal, because 9 times out of 10, it has nothing to do with you. You just, probably unintentionally...hit a nerve is all.

[Pitbulls were cross bred for fighting. They shouldn't be allowed to be owned - especially around children. Same for something like a Rottweiler which can just snap. There are many dogs which are good with children and let themselves be poked, prodded and pulled about by little ones and without any problem. But certain dogs should certainly not be in the home, or allowed out in public even muzzled. They have too much of the wolf personality...]
