There is a burning desire in the hearts of all people for a true understanding of their identity. In some ways, this has always been true. But with the ongoing dismantling of absolutes in our culture, even more so, since many people have always looked for a certain sense of identity in their surroundings. Hence, all the focus on personality tests and assessments and quizzes. Many are looking for something that will easily and accurately tell them who they are, so they can have peace.

The problem is that true, personal identity is not an isolated, quantifiable commodity. It is — and has always, only been — a reality deeply interwoven with, and in response to, the Heart of Jesus. The challenge is that love and intimacy and a true understanding of identity take a lot of work and time and patience (just like a successful marriage!). But this is our only true, lasting, unshakeable hope.

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” (Colossians 3:1-3)

I think a lot of what's going on with some people in the U.S. (where I am) right now, politically and socially, is exactly a lack of a strong identity. They have no solid core of faith to hold them together so they're blown about by the winds of whatever happens to be the "fashionable" thing these days to "believe." And if you are not strong in Christ you'll be entirely destroyed, eventually, by that kind of weakness.

It occurred to me that atheists believe in climate change but not in God. Mull that one over. How empty and foolish they are.

"Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure." (1 John 3:2-3)
